Building new airports with ADE
A36 Apache replied to A36 Apache's topic in FSX | FSX-SE Scenery Design Forum - How To
Yes, exactly what I did. Either I did something else wrong, or FSX cannot handle moving the reference point (what I call a designator) as far as I must for the Iloilo (RPVI) airport. What ever is wrong is causing the AI to ignore the airfield. Over Christmas I will start over and try again. -
Building new airports with ADE
A36 Apache replied to A36 Apache's topic in FSX | FSX-SE Scenery Design Forum - How To
Basically, what I have done is moved everything and left nothing but a graphical representation (polys) at the old location. The new airport is using the same Ident as the old, so I thought that was the only way to do it. Of course, I could start over and use a New Airport, altogether. What I did was set placemarks in Google Earth, take some screenshot overheads and then insert the images as a background to build upon by the placemark Northings/Eastings. The old airport location doesn't actually have any true airport construction like taxi pathways, runways or aprons, anymore. I couldn't see that it was possible to use them and get the airport to compile without errors. Then I downloaded a Ray Smith airport for Australia this weekend that had the same errors, so now I don't know if the errors are acceptable, or not.ADE really makes it fast and easy to do all these operations, so I could start over yet again. It's not like what I have is some masterpiece, or anything. -

Hey, thanks guys for the replies. You have already helped a lot.Yes, I know how to edit the AI airports in use and their location and altitude, as far as the AI is concerned). The problem I am having is specific to airfields that have "officially" been moved, while leaving the original airfield in place but unused. This is the Philippines I am working on right now and I will focus on one airfield as an example. At Iloilo on Panay Island the original airfield (RPVI) was no longer adequate, so there was a new International airport planned. The new airfield and the original can be seen in this image from google earth. The old field is on the SE and the new one to the NW.The new airfield location is at an altitude of 168 feet, which does not agree with the best terrain mesh I have (I believe it's SceneryTech). ScruffyDuck's information will help there. I didn't know you could use Polys like that (still learning). As far as the designators go I think a new airport drawing will automatically invoke the airport designator, although I haven't tried it yet. Probably, FSX will not like it being moved as far as I need. The following is a screenshot of what I am calling the airport and tower designators. The problem I have is that should I attempt to setup ATC at a new airfield that does not have the tower designator (in other words use the ATC multiplayer trick to create a tower view), that the tower is not created at the proper position. I thought the airfield designator was the problem with getting FSX to utilize the new field location properly, but it could be beyond our control I guess. -
I discovered a few airports in an area of the world I have an interest in (Philippines) like Iloilo (RPVI). In Iloilo they have built a new International airport at a new location. The problem I run into when moving the airport is:1) the terrain is MUCH lower than in reality. How do I plateau the area of the airport?2) how do I get FSX to recognize the new airport and ignore the old one?I have tried moving the airport designator, the tower and completely rebuilding an airfield. No matter what I do AI fail to use the new airfield.I also failed to locate information on how to insert things like the airport designator and tower designator. Is it possible with ADE?Thanks in advance for any help you may provide.

I discovered it was a scratch on the installation disk. A little visor polish and it's all good again. Thanks for the help.

Every default aircraft has the same problem. When I installed FSX it did not complete the installation, so I ran the install a second time. Then I had to run a repair also. However, I did start FSX after the first succesful instal. Then I added FSUIPC4 and ran FSX and the intro flight. I then installed SP1 and ran the intro flight. Then Acceleration was installed which is when I noticed the 2D cockpit was the only thing working. I thought it was a button mapping, so I went ahead with the weather installs and the F-16. It's not a bad mapping as far as I can tell.Yes, I have control set to full on all of the FSX folders and it is in the default location on the C: drive.

I just upgraded to W7 and of course the first program I installed to it was FSX, SP1, and Acceleration. Finally, I installed FSGenesisX, GraphicsX, Active Sky X, Active Sky Evolution and the Aerosoft F-16. However, when I load up any airplane to fly I am stuck in the 2D view. The odd thing is that the 3D virtual cockpit is selected in the settings area, but there doesn't seem to be any way to get a VC. I tried the menu bar (by hitting Alt) and the View menu doesn't have a VC listed anywhere. What could have possibly gone wrong with the install?

Hopes for a new Flight Simulator fizzled?

I agree with Tom Allensworth, but I have to add that the ability to reset the global representation of every airfield and city to any time relative to aviation history would be the "end all." -
Sorry to bring up an old past thread, but I received a request for a reply to this thread (so here I am).The problem with SLI systems is usually the drivers available from Nvidia. What ever you do get your drivers from the manufacturer of your specific cards. Make sure your cards are identical and do not use nHancer. nHancer will allow you more control of specific functions of the card, but usually it breaks SLI functionality. I initially used evga 8800 GTs and I experimented with drivers, the Nvidia Control Panel and nHancer before coming to the conclusion that nHancer is more trouble than it's worth. Also, please note that Nvidia and Microsoft are in collaboration together to get you away from Windows XP (it's my take on it) and so Nvidia has forever broken vsync on XP. If you are using XP you will never get SLI to work again with vsync. Yes, it operates and it responds as if SLI is working, but note that vsync is forever off.My test conditions were to freshly install my O.S. (Vista 64) and FSX along with the addons that I would use everyday (ASE UTX FSGenesis GEX etc). Finally, I used FSXmark07 (available from the Avsim file library) to benchmark each and every change. Additionally, I ran each setting through three times on FSXmark07 and used FRAPs to log the benchmark results. I did this with a single card and then with two cards in SLI. It is important to note that you must leave the FSX settings alone while conducting these benchmark runs, or you invalidate the results per settings. In the end I came up with these Nvidia Control Panel settings as optimum. Now, having shown you the results I must inform you that merely installing nHancer on your system will 'likely' invalidate the operation. You must completely remove nHancer and clean your system of any and all Nvidia drivers before installing the latest drivers (as of right now the latest for evga would be 196.21). If you later install nHancer on your system you will likely break SLI and lose control over the video card.I can confirm that the eVGA GTX 295s respond likewise, except I have anti-aliasing set to SLI32xQ.The only downside to SLI is that the scaling is likely only 10-30% increase in performance for each card added. Likely, the newer 480s will scale to 100% as the benchmarking sites are reporting, and I am anxiously awaiting any and all reports in that regard.Keep the dirty side down everyone!

Thanks everyone I've got it all sorted out now!

I'm not all that handy with the airport editors and I would like to see the airport in Ormoc, Leyte, Philippines more accurately represented. I would like to write Mr. Smith myself and request it, if at all possible. If you know how to contact him, please fill me in.

Thanks for clearing that up Nick. -
The problem I have is with you saying it is my use of cAPitAlIZaTions and accusing me of providing incorrect information as if I am a newcomer to computers. Right off you sound condescending. In customer support it is YOUR responsibility to nurture your relationship with every customer. You very quickly put all of the blame on me, as if I was stupid or something and offered no advice as to how to rectify the situation. This is not going to go well for you in business if the first thing you do is point out its someone elses STUPIDITY. cAPitAlIZaTions make no difference when writing to my email. On my own initiative I investigated the problem and I discovered that AT&T is using yahoo as a temporary mail service, while they modify their own and upgrade it. Probably it is your paranoia in dealing with internet aliases that is causing the problem. I have used this same account and cAPitAlIZaTions for much longer than you have been in business, and you are the very first problem like this I have experienced.I am far more inclined to blame you, since in my experience there has never been a problem (and I do a lot of business especially with your competitors). I, the customer, suggest you sort out your problems before you lose anymore customers. That would include filtering cAPitAlIZaTions to lower case on your own system, if it truly can not handle that problem. If you have no appreciation for customers then you are free to keep right on trucking as you are.Your support engine does not reach my account, yet I can receive emails from you directly. That seems very odd.

You are better off completely turning off UAC. Here's a free app that does just that:http://www.tweak-uac.com/home/

Does anyone know any of the group at FSD International? I recently purchased the P-38 Lightning for FSX, which I really enjoy, but it has a few problems I would like to report. Unfortunately, my registration on their forum system didn't work right or there is a problem with the automation, because I never received a password confirmation. When I contacted them they told me my account was confirmed and I was free to use the forums. Again, no password via email. So, I fire off a second email and the response was very visceral, as if it was my fault the system wasn't working and I, the customer, are the party that is doing it wrong. Okay, I know that the guys are busy and have limited time, but this is no way to run a business and I just want the plane (that I paid premium dollars for) to work right. So technical support is unresponsive and I have no where else to go. Where do I turn next? So, I'm here looking for answers on who to contact and get this sorted out. Anyone?

I am running FSX on an Intel E8400 CPU with Vista Ultimate x64 and 8 GB 800Mhz DDR2 with 8800 GTs in SLI (properly used WITHOUT nHancer) UTX USA/Canada/Europe, ASA, WOAI (all packages), GEX, GenesisX, with NO fsx.cfg tweaks (except to the video areas). I do have my system overclocked from 3.0 Ghz to 3.6 Ghz (linked and synced so the RAM is running at 800 Mhz and FSB at 1600). I have all sliders in terrain maxed I have all traffic OFF for boats and cars but I have Commercial and GA at 100% and aircraft shadows all on. I am running my computer on air and not water. My system maintains 56C and below on CPU RAM and GPUs and 46C and below on HDs. I do use multiple drives to ease the burden of I/O and I do not use the OS drive for FSX.Doing all of this was quite an accomplishment and I have to say there is a lot of bad information out there. However, if I can do it so can you. That said I can tell you that FPS varies quite a bit depending on where you are in the world and if I am going to shoot approaches into Frankfurt I will not use these settings. Configuring FSX teaches you what to set where so you can have a beautiful scenery and excellent smooth video while you fly. FPS is meaningless beyond that. I recommend you read through NickN's suggestions for FSX setup, but bear in mind what I am doing with SLI even NickN says cannot be done, yet it can. He also recommends nHancer which I would not wish upon my worst enemy. Still, I learned by following NickN's advice and taking it from there, so that's what I recommend. As to the overclocking stuff... I read up on what the guru's on EVGAs forums report they do and I followed their approach. The best advice I can offer anyone is read ten things before you do one thing and test only one thing at a time. Knowledge is everything.

I use straight up WOAI without conversion in FSX, but I would never know if they were running at the right time or not anyway. I recommend Ultimate GA and HTAI's Cessna package also. All of them are a great addition to add a little life to FSX.

Looking for tutorial
A36 Apache replied to A36 Apache's topic in FSX/FSX-SE Aircraft and Panel Design Forum - How To
Okay, very well. When I am making airplanes I will use the same thing. Because that day is not here yet, I wish to read up on the finer details which the SDK is incapable of explaining. Now if you can point to a specific text file then please do. Otherwise, I will wait for someone that is more helpful.Thank you. -

I opened it and there is no readme, there is no text file and there is nothing like a PDF. There are sample textures, DLLs, scripts, and plugins. In my OP I said I am looking for a book. Samples won't do, but a tutorial of some length might be very helpful. -

If you could point to a specific folder to check for a text file or PDF that would be very helpful. All I see are sample files and DLLs without any form of written explanation. -
I'm hoping someone has a book out there on FS model creation in GMax? Can someone point out a book on the subject? I can model in GMax, AutoCAD, or 3D Studio Max, but it would be nice to know some of the minor details of FS before I start so I don't miss any finer points. Specifically I wish to create models for FSX and I am looking for a tutorial that takes a plane from beginning to end. I wish to find this so that I learn how to create and place gauges and the finer details of textures and so on. Any help appreciated.

Well, I have sent email after email and heard nothing. You can only register once, so how do you ever order anything? It's very frustrating.
