Perhaps with a 50p charge? After all playing arcade games requires feeding the slot.

PC Pilot's promise of news of Flight
The previous edition (Sept-Oct No 75) had next to nothing about Flight. So I assumed this new edition (Nov-Dec No76) would deliver something of what they promised. I thought they promised a regular series of articles / information up to the actual release. Is Microsoft keeping them as starved as us or is there really something untoward going on ?

Time for an update!
They do seem to be keeping quiet.Even this month's PC Pilot had nothing after suggesting they would keep us informed. You have to have eyes like hawks to even notice the mags mention of Flight - and that was only to reply to a letter suggesting they wait . . .

Instant snap left view in Virtual cockpit
Thanks everyone I will try the camera.cfg but if that does what I asked for, I don't want to permanently loose the hat switch pan round. I want to be able to snap or swivel depending on mood mode. It takes me longer than 3 pan seconds to:- adjust throttle, apply flaps, keeping pitch, adjust trim, look for the runway, check speed, and keep heading . . . I wonder why there are not more women pilots - I thought they were the multi-taskers

Instant snap left view in Virtual cockpit
I am practicing takeoff, circuits and landings and not being a real pilot cannot see how you can do all that has to be done in the time available. The sim. has a disadvantage with all round visibility so the time it takes for the pan view to click its way round to left view and then back takes too long. So I have to use the 2-D cockpit and use shift + 4 to judge when to turn on base leg because the looking round is much quicker. Assuming this is what they mean by "snap" versus "pan" is it possible to "snap" in the VC ? thanks. Richard

FSX Built for shelf-life claim MS
Thank you all for an entertaining read. I love the mixture of irony comedy and good natured banter and I try to learn by reverse engineering it all.To get back to the sliders I wish the perf bucket had done it automatically after scanning a new installation. I still struggle to understand the 2 mesh sliders let alone the necessity to have so many others. I kept a file on each slider and added notes from the forums and PC Pilot to learn from but it was a bit like an O level student trying to keep up with a brain surgeon. I don't know what goes on under the bonnet. It would have been better at my level of knowledge to have had less complex choice but then perhaps you experts need the flexibility.Someone suggested labeling the sliders better and having a manual to look up the details would have helped. The level of detail and time and effort required in experimenting daunted me - so many variables - it seemed more like a monkey at a typewriter producing a Shakespearian sonnet.Anyone know any good FSX jokes while we waitfor mor flighty news?

FSX Built for shelf-life claim MS
In PC Pilot MS claims they wanted it to have theperformance range to provide continued improvements as computersdevelop. Can any of you software and i.t market experts explainsimply why this unpopular policy was more important to MS than currentuser satisfaction? More shelf life on users computer? Do theaero-engines wear out after 5000 flying hours? Does the softwarewear out? Of course not! Would I be delighted if the software gave“a fantastic experience out of the box” so I do not have to wait5 years and spend more? Yes please. Would I ever buy softwareknowing it is really primarily designed for hardware 10 years fromnow? No way. So why is forcing hardware upgrades so important? Therehas never been any other software on my computer that has behavedlike this. Or made me do so :rolleyes:I have no expertise here. Only gut feeling. So I suspect this claim to be disingenuous. There seems a covert motive I don't understand. I have used most old FS versions back to the first one. The only reason I ever wanted to upgrade hardware was to make FS run better. And at my level of knowledge upgrading is a pain. I would be happy running Lotus Symphony with DOS 6 now and would not have wasted all that learning if it were not for FS. Maybe the long shelf life will bite them on the bum. By the time flight takes off we will all be running FSX well enoughon our over clocked whatsits that we will be satisfied andenlightened enough to ignore the consumer rat race. After all FSX on current hardware gives me a greatexperience (at last) and I get a lot of fun out of it.

Any 'new' news from PCPilot ?
I have been looking forward to the new PC Pilot mainly to learn more about Flight and went to the news agent 3 times before late delivery arrived.Three pages of mainly picture, four bland questions and four replies which hardly told anything not already guessed on this forum. The only positive thing I noticed was the statement that they now want to provide everyone with a fantastic experience on current computers not ones five years from now. With all the enthusiastic speculation around here I feel disappointed at the lack of news and the questions the mag asked. Delaying gratification is one thing - burning holes in the gastric mucosa is something else.

C172 FSX auto-pilot question
I just turn HDG on and off quickly and then can steer while the auto ALT or verticle speed works. But I have not found a way to quickly engage alt hold at current altitude without also setting the current altitude manually.

ADF in default Bombardier CRJ700
Thanks everyone. I downloaded the file fixes from the library so not sure if they were there before the aircraft file swap but they all work. Now all I need is my weather stations back. :( No one has replied to that post yet.

ADF in default Bombardier CRJ700
Learning the controls and displays for this aircraft, there is not enough information in the default help. The radio frequency window includes ADF and there is a switch to hear the identifier but I have no idea how to use the instrument because the flight display is only for VOR 1 and 2. Is it possible to switch to an ADF arrow?thanksRichard

FSX Weather stations
I'd be greatfull for simple help on this. I tried to set up an FSX flight I did for real last month from Norwich to Aberdeen (UK). Norwich was foggy vis 1 mile and Aberdeen had 5/8 stratus just before entering the ILS. I only have the FSX weather which I know some condemn but is OK for me. But when I looked for all the different weather stations in advanced weather, there was only Kinloss for the whole of the UK! To have different weather en-route I need different stations.Where have they all gone? I used to see so many around S England that I turned off that symbol to unclutter the map view.Richard

Most of the pics we've already seen. Only 2 or three I think were new bottom of page 36.

Leaning airport buildings
Thanks GaiidenI have the cfg setting as 'true' but like to have zoom at 30% in order to have a good view outside and I move the eye location up to the instruments enough to see the detail of the gauges. You're right it does have a fishbowl effect even at 50%. What is your zoom level and is there an optimum? After all we are all sitting in front of flat screen monitors.

Leaning airport buildings
When viewing airport buildings from the runway some look like the leaning tower of Pisa. Is there a setting in config about wide screens or something ?Thanks for any suggestions.FSX + acceleration +SP2 +UTX and GEX EuropeDell XPS 420 Nvidia GT 8800 1440 x 900

Commercial versus Scenery reviews ?
It seems Flight 1 have just completed a massive work on European scenery since your March 14th review and I hope the new version GEX Europe v2.0 will be reviewed soon. I wondered why GEX is not included under the "scenery" link on the main reviews page?
-
UTX Scenery review ... which version?
Upgrading for FSX is complex, especially if one addon works with another like GEX and UTX. It may be obvious to all except me but when I saw the UTX review dated Dec 2010 I wondered if the review was for a new version because I updated my UTX to 1.4 in June. And so I looked everywhere for a version number but couldn't find one.

Change color of Axis Indicator ?
I think it depends on your DirectX 10 setting

Cloud Visibility
Sorry my advanced weather settings wrt visibility were not clear.I usually set vis at 30 miles from ground to 8000 ft, Cum cloud layer 4/8 from about 4000 t0 8000 and the thin whispy ones on top much higher 3/8 about 25000 to 35000.This is probably not real for all you experts but for me gives a very realistic skyscape with just default FSX weather. In fact it seems so good I dont understand the need for FEX REX or whatever. Each to their own . . .
-
Cloud Visibility
To make it work more realistically in default FSX I set the user weather visibility level from ground to 8K
