  1. If they could work around the FSX ground friction model and make it as it is in real life (or close), I would be extremely pleased. Because eventhough its how the airplanes handle in the air that is the most important, it still is a bit of an immersion breaker to have to taxi around at 40+ % N1. (And damn hard :D)
  2. Alstublieft Bas.Neal, i guess they could (maybe) link the ATC request page with the squak box/fsinn chat. Btw, your name sounds familiar ;)
  3. Hey there!First video i've seen so far on youtube where you can watch the full cockpit preparation of an aircraft: Video is in multiple parts, but you should be able to find these at the related videos section on the right. You guys seen videos like this on any other aircrafts?
  4. I read somewhere that to master something it takes about 10 000 hours. That might be an overestimation. But i think its pretty close. To say that you have mastered an aircraft as complex as the MD11 after a couple of hours is naive bordering on arrogant. I have flown it maybe 500 hours all in all, and i wouldn't even begin to say that i have mastered it. I know much of the normal procedures and what to do on a normal flight but when it comes to abnormals im no way even near a new F/O's level (probably because as simmers we dont have the luxury of being taught by a master but rather have to teach ourselves.)EDIT: that came off a little harsh and i saw you had rephrased yourself. Take it as something good that you haven't mastered it though, for me one of the great things with aviation is that there is always something new to learn, and even when you think you've fully figured something out it can come back and throw you a curve ball so to say. (was that the correct use of the phrase? I'm european and have never played baseball :D)
  5. Some time ago a fellow avsimmer (sorry can't remember your name, Eszinack or something similar :) ) came up with the ingenious idea of having a N1 % reading of where your throttles are even when the autothrottle is engaged, so that you could align your physical throttle with the throttle ingame. I remember that PMDG were open to implementing this idea. Has it been confirmed as implemented, disregarded or are you guys still discussing it within PMDG?I would love to have something like this, and i think it would encourage more people to disengage the A/T earlier if they could align it then so that the speed would be stable and only in need of small corrections, instead of just disenaging it at 100-50 feet to move the throttles to idle. Thanks in advance :)
  6. Hey guys. A lot of Central and Southern american airports are visited by MD11's (mostly MD11F but some airports have KLM's landing, like MPTO and some carribean destinations)I recently bought Boris Foreros Quito X to fly to with my PMDG MD11F and would first like to recommend it to anyone that wants to do some long range freight operations to this part of the world. It has high detail ground textures around the airports and also well modeled buildings on it. The runway textures are good, the grass not as much but still decent enough not to make you annoyed.I'd like to ask if someone has tried VirtualCol's Tocumen X (MPTO) airport for fsx and what your thoughts are of it.Also, if you know of any other well made airports in this area that see's MD11's regularely and are of pretty high standard (Im pretty picky, but reasonable ;) ), please tell me about them! :)EDIT: Quito X, Virtualcol Tocumen, and Bogota virtual can all be found at Simmarket if you want to check them out. I have only tried Borisforeros Quito X though.
  7. Sorry for the late reply. Thank you Chris, thats a lot of good information! Rob: sounds interesting, i'll check it out :)
  8. Amen to that Paul.My first flight will probably be from Stockholm Arlanda Airport (Sweden, ARN/ESSA) to Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL/ENGM) in a 738 :PEDIT: A good quote i like that i found in Empire total War is: "The man who gives up a little bit of freedom for a little bit of security, deserves neither, and will lose both" Benjamin FranklinNot saying it should be taken literally or anything...
  9. Yes ofcourse, when i said flare, i dont mean a Cessna type flare where you keep the plane off the ground till it almost stalls. But an extra 2-3 degree nose up pitch beginning at 50 feet and fully established at 30 feet. But you guys are all right ofcourse, it depends on the rate of descent in the approach. Runway 34 at Zurich airport and at max landing weight is a good example of where you need to flare sooner to not end up with the MLG through the wings...
  10. Thanks mate! I guess the next step for me after NGX would have to be getting a PPL and onwards, it seems PMDG is making FSX so realistic it will soon be more realistic than reality ;)
  11. Hi. I've always heard the SOP for the MD11 is to flare it at 50 feet. The autoland function in FSX seems to flare it at that height too, but a lot of people seem to flare it at 30 feet and are saying thats the correct way. Are they confusing MD11 with Boeing aircrafts or have i heard wrong?
  12. Nice, how much would you say TrackIR improves your ability to do circuits/traffic patterns and visual approaches? Those are the things i feel using a hat-switch are most hindering, but im still a little unsure whether it will improve so much.
  13. Is it possible to hotkey a "disable" function, for example while you're in cruise or want to read something without having to keep your head straight? Almost like the soft-mute function with fs2crew, if you know what i mean.
  14. Thanks a lot for all the answers. With Michael's and Ian's answers i think im set to learn the PMDG NGX inside out :)
  15. Do you have to buy the clip aswell, or is everything included in the TrackIR 5 package?
  16. I've taken the same approach thus far as Noah is, but your way, Ethan, seems to be just as good. Hmm what should i do :( :biggrin:I guess there is no "right" way, but i'd love to hear more opinions as i don't know which part needs knowledge from another etc. I guess you could read the procedures in FCOM 1 and then look up specific chapters like automatic flight from FCOM 2 whenever they are mentioned. It almost feels wrong to read FCTM first as its so interesting ;) Like a novel hehe... (wow am i a geek or what?)
  17. Hey everyone! I got my Captain Manuals set last week and have been reading through the first few chapters of FCOM 2 and taken a sneak peak at the FCTM (couldn't resist). What im wondering is: Whats the best way to read and learn the manuals? Should you start with the FCOM 1 or 2, or read the FCTM first? Should you just scan through the two Operations manuals and then use the procedures sections in while familiarizing yourself with the aricraft, or keep notes of everything like youre studying for a test?If i were to do a type rating for the 737 NG, what would i be expected to memorize? For example do you need to know the full limitations and supplementary procedures by memory?I know this is a bit overkill and i might not even follow all the instructions if they are to keep notes of 3000 pages of material, but humour me ;)
  18. It should be Ett: "Ha ett härligt nyår" or more commonly said: "Ha ett gott nytt år" ;) Just thought i'd mention it.
  19. Okay, i just tried the FPS-limiter now and the fps stays at 30 without any stutters. This was with the 747-400X so im pretty confident i will be able to keep that fps in most situations, although as i wrote earlier there are airports where i guess it will drop. AAbout the texture/autogen loading, would the LOD-range really affect that?EDIT: Right now im using BufferPools = 200MB, when doing the tweak-test on ******* website Usepools = 0 is used, last time i tried that, i didnt use an external fps-limiter and got big stutters and blurry textures, presumably because i saturated the GPU. I also hadn't overclocked my CPU. Im still a bit cautious about using a lot of tweaks however, could anyone tell me what the difference is between a larger bufferpool like 200MB, and 0, and the Reject threshold tweak?
  20. Hmm, the fps-limiter you guys are talking about, thats the one with a couple of .dll files, a .jar file and a .exe? If so i cant seem to get the exe file to start, nothing happens when i click on it, i've tried right click and open, double click, right click and open as admin. Everything. The file just flashes like its about to start but never does.
  21. Hi! I bought a new computer this fall and have had mostly good performance with it. With the help of some of you guys here on the avsim forums and also following advice on simforums i bought a i7 950 (same price in my country as the i7 930 at that time) a Noctua NH-D14 heatsink/cpu cooler, an Asus P6TD Deluxe motherboard, mushkin redline 1600 Mhz DDR3 (6-8-6-24, 2gb x 3) and a EVGA gtx 480. Performance compared to my older Core 2 Duo e8500 with HD4870 was alot better, especially in stability and smoothness. A week ago i OC'ed my processor to 4ghz and after stresstesting and stability checking im quite confident it is a stable OC. I still have some minor problems though: Even though i've followed the settings for Nvidia Inspector that NickN on simforums posted my ping jumps up and down alot causing small stutters, especially in turns. It can go from 40 to 120 then down to 35 etc. Also texture loading when flying seems a little slow, and the autogen pops in and out, taking away some of the immersion of flying. With a 4ghz overclock on an i7 processor and my Gtx 480, shouldn't my computer be able to load ground textures/autogen a bit better? (Im using UTX/GEX). Right now im having about 40+ fps in the VC of the PMDG MD11 on ground at Flytampa's Vienna V2 in FSX. On some less optimized airports like Aerosofts Paris CDG/Norway Vaernes i get lower fps, more like 25-30 which is unfortunate but i guess theres nothing i can really do about that. After checking around for tweaks i found the bufferpool tweak, and first tried the usepools=0, which made it even worse, and caused a lot of instability, as you may see i don't really need more fps, i would happily trade a couple of fps for less stutters faster scenery loading. So i tried Bufferpools = 490MB and 200MB and 200MB seems to almost completely get rid of all the stutters, I still have the slower texture loading though. Do you guys know of any tweaks/settings for speeding up autogen/texture loading (im talking about blurry textures, but most of the time im flying at less than 200kts), would the reject threshold tweak help or cause more instability? Also my current FSX HDD is a 1TB 7200RPM WD harddrive, is this the culprit of my problems or can i solve this without having to buy a SSD?Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance :)
  22. Its finally here!!!!!!!!My NGX Captain Manuals Set :DTotally agree with all the reviews, its completely awesome! I don't have some of the candy the Chief Pilot set has but with me being in Uni and the freight costing 60 $ (and i found out today that i had to pay 40 euro as a customs fee :( well im committing financial suicide, but its completely worth it :DEDIT: Lol, sorry for derailing the thread guys when it was getting back on topic at last, you did your best 737freak ;)
  23. Ethan, thanks for the site. I think i wont be buying a new Yoke in a long time lol, 1000 $ is a lot of money for a fs controller :PAbout the sticky joystick, i made it sound worse than it is i think. It is not that noticeable. It just "creaks" a bit, sometimes, when i haven't touched it for a while and then perform a turn, its mostly a sound rather than a resisting force or something like that. Anyway if i get too annoyed of it i can send it back and get a new one. (a deal with the vendor)
