  1. I installed the 970 and I'm very pleased with the results. GPU usage is down to 30% running two monitors. The system I have isn't the strongest but it seems nicely balanced and will do nicely until I upgrade my MB and CPU. Thanks for the help with this decision. It was a good one.
  2. Thanks for the advice about the warranty and step-up program. I did read the the full post you mentioned. It is a valuable cautionary tale. I hope everyone contemplating a GPU upgrade sees it. I think I will be OK with the 970. I have a decent system that gives me good results but it's clear the GPU could be a little stronger. I'll report on how it works out.
  3. With your help I have decided to go for the GTX 970 for now. There are so many models it's hard to decide. I'm not interested in doing my own OC of a GPU but like fast and quiet. Would this be a good choice? Or does it matter? EVGA GTX 970 Superclock ACX 2.0 Thanks again and good luck on your next build. Bill
  4. I had CPUZ and used the snipping tool to capture the image and with time will figure out how to paste it to this forum. In the meantime I think I know what you want to see. Model: P8Z68-V-PRO Chipset: Intel SB Rev. 1.xx Southbridge: Intel Id1C44 Rev. 05 LPCIO Nuvoton NCT6776 Graphic Interface: Version: PCI-Excpress Link Width: x8 Max Supported x16 To be clear, the improved performance with P3Dv3 by shifting more of the load to the GPU is my motivation to upgrade my graphics card. Because I'm looking to upgrade to a Skylake i7 6700 CPU and Z170 MB next year I would prefer to jump to the GTX 980 ti if my MB can support it. If not, a GTX 970 might be a good interim solution. Thank you so much for your feedback. Knowledge is a wonderful thing to share.
  5. Thank you so much for your response. I followed your suggestion by starting up P3Dv3 with MSI Afterburner and watched it jump to 99 and stay there. So a better GPU would upgrade my system? I don't think I'm alone in this situation. Many of us who bought i7 2600K CPUs and the GPUs of the day are looking at Skylake and Z170MBs and are planning our future purchases. Should I get a GTX 970 to hold me over or invest in a GTX 980 ti or something more exotic to future proof? Would a 980 ti even run on a Z68 MB? If I had the money I would do a whole new build; but I promised "SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED" that I would only build every five years. V3 ROCKS
  6. I have been very pleased with the performance improvement with V3 of P3D generally and particularly with payware aircraft. My current system,(see below) still struggles with payware scenery and weather. I plan to move to Skylake in the future and wonder if a better GPU would be a good investment for the short term. I like the price point of the GTX 970 but would consider a GTX 980 or 990. Thanks for your help. CPU: i7 2600K OC 4.4 GPU: Geforce 580
  7. This forum was very helpful when I built my second computer a few years ago so I'm back looking for more help. I have held off waiting to see how P3Dv3 would run on my gear. The results were interesting. With a default aircraft, scenery and weather I could move the sliders way up and still get a jitter free 60+fps. If I loaded a BIG aircraft, payware airport and nice clouds my system choked until I moved everything way back down. Here is what I have now. Case CM HAF 912 Advanced Power Supply Corsair AX750 750W Mother Board ASUS 1155 P8 Z68-V Pro CPU i7-2600K ocd Cooler Noctua NH-D14 Memory MushkinRed8GBDDR3 1600 Video Card GeForce 580 OS and FSX 2- Agility3 240 GB SSD I just ordered a Samsung 850 Pro 512GB SSD because I'm running out of space. I would like to put in a i7-6700K but I would also have to change out the MB and memory. $$$ Questions: PMDG recommends a GTX 960 as the minimum graphics card. Would a GTX 970 or 980 make a difference with the way P3dv3 shares the load around? I only have one monitor. Thanks, Bill
  8. Great news. Time to tidy up the SSDs. Flight simming at a whole new level and the sky's the limit. 64bit here we come. Bill Buxton
  9. Thank you for the update. Sometimes not knowing is worse than knowing. In this situation I'm afraid we are in for a long wait. Having PMDG aircraft fly on the P3D platform would be a major step forward in the evolution of flight simulation. It's always nice to have something to look forward to. I haven't had FSX on my computer for months but I get it's time for another re-install before I forget how to fly the NGX and 777. William Buxton
  10. Thanks, that's information I needed also. I edited the .CFG to change BrakesInfoEnabled= to False but it didn't have any effect. I was shocked and saddened that it didn't work. I will be glad to have the annoying red message gone forever. I think with your help, I may have achieved total mastery of Flight Simulation. Oh wait, Rex still can't find that darn "flightwxmap".
  11. Today I flew the NGX in P3D from KSEA-CYVR with Orbix PNW, REX, Aiviasoft EFB, TrackIR, EZCA, and UT2. It was an amazing experience. While porting all these programs over, I have been very careful to backup my FSX install and keep it safe. I then flew from KATL-KTPA and after landing realized with real sadness that I don't need to go back to FSX. I wonder how may thousands of hours and dollars I invested in that simulation? It was time and money very well spent. http://en.wikipedia....light_Simulator Thanks again to MS, Aces Studio and all the companies that have kept the sim advancing. To use an Olympic analogy, someone has been passed the torch and a new version is in development.
  12. I'm also having random although more frequent crashes. I have run the repair for FSX and Acceleration and re-installed the aircraft with no improvement. I've also turned off all my add-ons. I'm not sure what to try next. Bill Buxton
  13. In my new set-up I want to relegate my oldish 19" 4:3 ViewSonic to displaying my EFB. I'm not familiar with how the 16:9 format displays FSX, web pages or documents. Feedback would be appreciated. I'm about ready to purchase this: http://www.newegg.co...-24236112-L016B which is on sale this week for $159.99 w/rebate. Does anyone have experience with Asus monitors?

  15. The aircraft is a work of art! This is not a huge issue but it is perplexing. I use CH controllers and have the parking brake programmed to a button on my Pro Throttle. It engages properly but after a few seconds it releases. If I set the brake in the VC the same thing happens. I have re-calibrated my controllers and looked for conflicts in my FSX settings. The MD-11 doesn't have this issue.
  16. First, thanks to the development team for creating this work of art. I have been a flight simmer since the very beginning and it is thrilling to see what they have achieved. A new standard has been set. Lesson 1. Read the introduction but if you don't have a high-end system don't push the FSX settings to high. (I did) Lesson 2. Re-calibrate your controllers. (My aircraft wanted to jump out of park, taxied to fast and didn't want to brake.) Lesson 3. Know where the TO/GA touch area is. (I touched it by accident while programming the FMC and went through a fire drill getting everything back under control.) Lesson 4. Know what your external weather engine has planned for you. (After reading the intro. I couldn't wait any longer so I loaded some fuel and took off VFR from the Boeing Plant heading to Comox B.C. My weather engine gave me a low ceiling and thunderstorms. I flew the 737 like a bush plane, keeping it under 200' all the way but got it down in one piece.) Lesson 5. This is a very slippery aircraft. (I have been flying the MD-11 and this plane is a challenge to slow down. Give it some time and distance.) Now if someone will explain how to view all the panels without TrackIR I will be a happy arm chair pilot.
  17. Happy Birthday Captain.
  18. I don't know why but the stutters stopped. I'm not going to complain.
  19. I have FPS set to unlimited and externally limited to 20. Everything looks good but I'm getting consistent and annoying stutters when I switch TO or BETWEEN the 2D cockpit and the virtual cockpit. I don't have any other stuttering. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
  20. It really helps to have someone point you in the right direction. I was able to deal with both those issues after some searching and experimentation. I feel like I'm squeezing every bit of productivity out of my system by flying a big bird, in a rich environment with add-ons that make each flight special.I find it amazing that so many smart people have contributed their time and expertise to tweak FSX and keep it vibrant. Certainly FLIGHT has a strong base to build on and hopefully it will benefit from the efforts of dedicated flight simmers like yourself. Thanks.
  21. Thanks for your great work putting this utility together, *******. I received and activated a new fsx.cfg and downloaded the external FPS Limiter. Where do I place the limiter files? It recommended that I disable Transparency Anti-aliasing. Where do I make that change? Thanks again
  22. I'm looking for the banner and directions for adding it to my signature.
  23. This is an old thread but an issue that I faced when moving up to the MD-11. I solved it my purchasing an Electronic Flight Bag (EFB). There are several good ones out there but I choose the AiviaSoft EFB. To load a flight I start by going to http://fuel.aerotexas.com/ to calculate fuel usage for the flight. I then use the EFB to access RouteFinder to get the route which inserts into the EFB. I can then get real time METAR data from a number of sources, determine preferred runway, plan a taxi route, see an overview of available SIDs, select a SID and save all this as a PMDG rt2 file. When I enter the Departing/Destination airport codes into the FMC, the route is there. Note: If the route has more than one page you need to go to the last page before hitting INSERT. I don't enter arrival transitions, STARS or approaches until later in a flight. The AiviaSoft EFB isn't perfect because it's necessary to have FSX in windowed mode if you are operating on one machine. The perfect solution is to run the EFB on a second networked computer.I hope this helps someone. If you have a better approach to flight planning I would love to hear about it.Bill Buxton
  24. The PDF Kneeboard is a great solution for viewing PDF files while in Full Screen mode. I have a friend who can put that to good use. While researching this topic I communicated with AivlaSoft about how great it would be to have Routes created on their platform download directly into the PMDG MD-11. They said they were working on it.Today, using the AivlaSoft platform, I took a route created by Route Finder, added SIDS and STARS and after activating it, found it loaded into the PMDG MD-11 FMC. If they add Google Map to their moving map it may be time for me to buy a second monitor so I can run FSX in full screen mode. Now that I'm getting flight planning partially under control it may be time for me to start looking for a VA. That's a whole new world for me, anyone have any thoughts?Bill Buxton
  25. I usually get my charts from CHART FINDER but end up printing the ones I need. I like the size and shape of the FSWIDGETS unit. Doesn't the fact that it is a "module" that floats on top of FSX solve the windows problem? The AiviaSoft EFB is very interesting. I love the way you can select SIDS and STARS by runway, then direction of departure / approach and then preview your plan. Having all the charts available and in order is nice. I also like that the airport chart can show taxi directions.Currently it is only possible to create a *.rt2 file of their EFB route. If they can get their routes to load into the FMC it would be killer. This EFB probably needs to be run on a separate networked computer but I'm not sure.Does anyone know what the Airlines plan to use as Electronic Flight Bags?Bill Buxton
