  1. I'm confused here. Why would I want to limit my GPU's memory to 1GB?
  2. For some reason when I use Ryan's 8xS setup (which I love as far visuals go), the sim gets pretty jerky in large cities and airports. I dropped it down to 4xS with 2x Supersampling and it seems to be acceptable. Thanks for your help.
  3. Sweet, thanks man. What kind of AA are you running?
  4. So what's the consensus here? My return period is waning on my 1.5GB GTX 580. Should I upgrade to the 3GB version for a 2560x1440 resolution? Looking at some of the benchmarks, for example HERE, seem to suggest the 3GB is not worth the extra $100 in my case.
  5. I would be interested in hearing this as well. I was debating between the two after I bought my high res monitor. I decided on the 1.5GB version but I have heard many differing opinions around here...
  6. Although, I must say after taking a closer look the visual quality went down a bit. Alas, the give and take theory prevails!
  7. Wow. I still had Inspector set to 8xS Combined with 2x supersampling. Changed it to your settings Zach - 8xQ and 4x supersampling and instant change! Much, much, smoother. Ryan should definitely check this out for the nVidia Inspector sticky. And as for the 580, you haven't seen fast til you've overclocked it to 900MHz Best,
  8. Interesting Zach, yeah I haven't had any stutter problems since playing around with my AA. I'm using 8xS right now with 2x supersampling on a 2560x1440 display. Are those settings "compatible?" Tried using Ryan's nVidia Inspector sticky but I think those settings are catered for 1920x1080 resolutions and thus too demanding for my display. Thanks,
  9. This could be a whole combination of factors. After I first installed the NGX, I was getting serious stutters right after takeoff with the HUD open. I found that pausing the sim, going into windowed mode, then back to full screen mode helped smooth out the sim again. Then I played around with some settings, such as REX cloud resolution, cloud layers in ASE, Ultimate Traffic percentages, and antialiasing. I seem to have finally found a sweet spot for the NGX given my hardware, and this is what I recommend you do as well. No one person's settings are going to fix all. Every system is different and you have to play around a little to get where you want to be. One thing is certain, the NGX seems to be a memory consumer, so anything that takes up more RAM or VRAM will cause the sim to deadlock or stutter in some situations. Try turning off traffic on approach if you want to keep cloud resolutions high, lower autogen density if you want UT at 100%, etc. FSX is a give and take world, and it's a ######, I know. Let's hope for better in MS Flight.
  10. Funny, I was just about to post this. My dad just emailed it to me today. Sounds like a blanket statement to me. I think there is still much credibility to their profession. This just goes to show that no matter how much things get automated, there still needs to be a live human being to assess the situation. There are many controls in place for these accidents not to happen - manual calculations to reconcile with the avionics, captain / first officer crosschecking, etc. Pilots often manually fly departures, and almost always hand fly approaches and landings - what's the fun of letting the computer do it for you anyway? I was just watching the Air Canada 777-300 DVD the other night - the old man is still doing pencil math all over the cockpit, the FO flew the departure and approach / landing by hand. I've seen too many of these articles lately, and I guess I'm skeptical. Maybe training needs to be more rigorous for a certain few airlines where these accidents have occurred, but overall, I think we're all still pretty safe in the skies. All the best,
  11. What kind of resolution and antialiasing are you running? I think mine hits somewhere around 60%, never that high. I'll check it out though...
  12. Thanks! I have it at 8xS AA and 2x Supersampling right now. Works pretty good except for some major cities / airports. I'll play around with it some more.
  13. Hi Glenn, just out of curiosity, what kind of antialiasing are you running at that res?
  14. What's up Dan, good to see you back in here! Love the Guinness MD-11! Great video man.
  15. BTW, if anyone's interested in a GPU upgrade, I probably will be posting my GPU for sale in the Swap Meet forum sometime next week. If you're interested, PM me!
  16. Thanks Mark. Drivers are 280.26. All I have done is copied line for line Ryan's nVidia Inspector settings shown in this post for the 8xS configuration. All I have done with my FSX.cfg was run it through this utility thanks to ******* Bojote. Make sure you back up your current FSX.cfg, delete it, run FSX, select the settings you want (I recommend following those recommended in the NGX Intro Doc), close FSX, then run your freshly generated FSX.cfg through the site aforementioned. Currently I'm running a 22" Samsung display at 1920 x 1080, haven't really adjusted anything with it except for turned it on "Game Mode" through its own interface. Absolutely. Really did not know what I was missing.
  17. Trevor - I'll test the Dell out first and see what I think. I've read a lot about it and most have said nothing but great things. Got rated number one on CNET so that says something there. Plus I like the variety of connections it offers so I can hook other devices up to it as well (*ahem* HDMI), which the HP does not offer. No Name - I'm running the late 200 series drivers right now on my 470 and haven't had any problems. I would not have upgraded my card if it wasn't for the extremely high resolution I will be running on the new monitor (2560 x 1440) which is going to take more GPU power. I've done some reading and it sounds like a great card - check out this post. Note he is using the same exact processor in the testing that I'm using now. I'll see what I find and report back my results. Nevertheless, if both don't size up to my expectations I can always return...
  18. Basically straight out of the NGX Intro doc - just reduced autogen density to normal. Using REX textures (2048 x 2048 clouds) with ASE weather (1 cloud layer). Direct 3D Antilag limiter @ 40 FPS with ENB Series enabled. Also have UT2 running with 70% airline density, 10% GA. Just broke down the other night (after returning from the local pub) and bought a Dell U2711 monitor and a GTX 580 to power it. I'll post some more shots as soon as I get those up and running...
  19. Nice! I'll have to look into Manchester, I have Heathrow and Gatwick and they're amazing!
  20. Looks great but the problem I have with covering the entire US with photo scenery is that you don't get the change in seasons in places that really need it. SoCal, Nevada, Arizona, and Texas, don't have much of a change minus some of the high mountains with snow. I think Vero FS offers different seasonal photoreal sceneries but the file sizes are MASSIVE. That's why I stick to ORBX and GEX in most places that need the extra seasonal adjustment to keep things as close to reality as possible. When ORBX releases NorCal and SoCal I will probably discontinue all of my California photosceneries, just because you get the best of both worlds with a mix of photoreal areas, terrain mesh, and seasonal changes. ORBX is really the best option in my book.
