  1. SOLVED!!! (Or at least it looks that way) The sim has been stable for an hour now, so it looks good! After searching the net for solutions, I stumbled across ComboFix. It is a system repair tool (with nuclear power as one reviewer described it  ) that runs from the command line. And should be used with care!! I threw caution to the wind and let it have a go, and voila!! FSX seems to be happy! Although I'll never know what it repaired, I really don't care now. My frustration was reaching unhealthy levels. Well, before I do anything else I'll back up my OPSYS and FSX partitions. Cheers!
  2. Well, this is a nightmare! After loading FSX, my laptop will do an abrupt shut down without any sort of heads up! It usually happens within 5 minutes of loading. This is the worst! CDT would at least give me some chance to debug the system! But no! The system does a very brief and frantic harddisk I/O and then just shuts down! Here's a brief story of my situation: I use my Samsung RC530 laptop for simming (on a tight budget folks). It follows that the laptop isn't a dedicated gaming rig. And that I'm prone to installing all kinds of software I think I need at any given moment (probably braking some cardinal rule on system stability). Furthermore I'm a periodical simmer, and sometimes it can take several months between each time I fire up FSX. So my memory fails me in trying to pinpoint a possible culprit that might cause this violent crash! I'm quite certain that it isn't my FSX installation that is causing the crash. As it worked perfectly last time I fired it up 7-8 months ago. It got to be some software installed between then and now. I have done the following: Used the AVSIM CTD manual and tried most of the steps, excluding disabling scenery.Unistalled a lot of softwareRegistry cleanup (CCleaner and Wise)Malware search (Adaware)virus search (Microsoft Security Essentials)Stopping Processes and Services before loading FSX (Something I always do)I consider myself an advanced user when it comes to Windows (might have to reconsider that) OS's. And at this stage, a complete reinstall is not an option. In fact, this problem has made me more tenacious than ever! I have been battling this for days now. And I humbly ask you, my fellow simmers, to point me in the right direction. I do have a starting theory I'd like to share with you: A crash of this magnitude must have a very specific cause, and in theory it should be a rare event. Win7 is a very advanced operating system, and the following is true about the inner workings. Win7 creates a virtual machine on startup and isolates HW from program execution. Disk I/O, memory I/O, and other system calls all have to be passed to the kernel for execution. And for program code initiate/cause a crash/shutdown, bypassing the windows messaging queue (preparing to shut down windows is meticulous process) and all the barriers to halt execution of faulty code (even built in to the processor), without ANY warning! Should be rare event indeed! The Event log contains nothing, No BSOD dump file exists! As I mentioned earlier, the system does some frantic Disk I/O, lasting for about a second, before going dark. Perhaps some sort of realtime disk logging program could help me? In short, is there any sort of procedure I can follow, given the severity of the crash? Hoping that only rare situations can cause this? Thanks Morten Haughom
  3. This is beyond embarrassing, and if I had any brains, I should tell a cheesy lie now and leave this forum for a month with my cheeks still burning red even after 30 days of shame and utter discomfort. But you all came to my aid, I owe you the truth: I was lined up alright, only it was RWY35... I should never get a job that requires mastering spatial orientation. Sad to say, it is a major part of my job, as I my profession falls under ATS: I'm an AFIS Officer at ENSS TWR. Any explanation is probably lost on you by now, as you all are laughing so hard, it becomes hard to read further because of all the tears... But I need to warn about distractions and how dangerous they can be when you're flying big jets: I was multitasking beyond my capacity. Desktop simming with a two year old in a foul mood running around your feet isn't recommended. Not when you in between this, also have promised your better half to finish painting the guest bedroom. Making you run back and forth in an attempt to fool her into thinking you're making progress. What is the lesson? Don't buy exiting software unless you have cleared your schedule. And grow up! Having the impulse control of a ten year old isn't charming nor good for the family harmonics... I apologize for wasting your time, you deserve the laugh. Now the kid is asleep, the bedroom is finished. And can't wait to get airborne with RC! Happy flying
  4. Ray: No didn't change the default values. Bert: I'm looking into it Thanx both of you, will report back soon
  5. Yep Kevin, I did. Twice even. I was told in another thread that the version shipped with the RCv4.3 download was old. Downloaded ver 4.65 from Peter Dowson's own site.
  6. Well, we're off to a great start! (NOT!) While I'm writing this I am lined up for take off at ENNA (Norwegian Air Force Base, Banak, way up north) RWY 17. The last TWR instruction I got was: "Lufthansa 229, Tower, Runway 17, line up and wait". And that was 10 minutes ago... This is obviously not supposed to happen! Unless this is a cruel joke that RC throws at noobs! These are my settings RC: Load a flightplan ENNA to ENBO@34000 (Alt1- , Alt2-) / ATA.BADIX.PIGAX.BDF.LAVNA.EVD.ULVAK.. *RVSM Controller Info Departing Rwy 17, Arriving Rwy 7, Dep TL( FL 80) Arr TL( FL 80) D/ATIS(12480) D/CD(0) D/GND(12210) D/TWR(12210) D/DEP(0) D/ARR(0) A/ATIS(12390) A/GND(11810) A/TWR(11810) A/DEP(12400) A/ARR(12400) Radar Contact options LUFTHANSA 2 2 9 Heavy display text(OFF) play pilot(ON) auto reply(ON) ckpt ding(ON) AI interaction(ON) tune on contact(ON) vfr squawk(1200) 250kt alt(10000) Alt dev(300) Hdg dev(15) Spd dev(10) AI chatter(OFF) Live chatter(ON) IFR Training(OFF) .FLT/.WX Path = The RC panel inside FSX has only one selectable option: Main-0 And my first fix enroute is: <ATA>33m/250/11740 "NoDepProc" was selected under Controller Info before I clicked the "Start RC" button! I'm tempted to just push up the throttles and start rolling. But I feel this will only give me a sh*tload of virtual trouble with the Norwegian Civil Aviation Authority. And no real solution to my troubles with the absent controller in Banak tower! Instead I'm listening to Live chatter. TALKING NORWEGIAN! LoL, Truly amazing really. It doesn't matter that the chatter has been recorded at ENTO TWR, 860nm from my current location. You Yanks always have trouble grasping the size of Norway, thinking it is no bigger than Rhode Island. So, any suggestions?
  7. Checked! Good advice! Will do right away! We're not on the same page here Ron. My question was poorly constructed. But now I'm not entirely sure if it is an issue after all. And I need to ask another question to clarify: Is it true that all the RC settings are locked when you click the "Start RC" button? Effectively starting your ATC session/flight in FSX. I recently purchased a FSUIPC license. And the FSUIPC installer (launched by the RC installer), aborted installation when it found I had a newer version, so I think I'm good to go. Excellent advice, will comply All security issues has been resolved. To the best of my knowledge :) I will Ron. I've already read the manual twice! Well, some topics just got a glance, but I do have the big picture! I know how to handle two PMDG heavies, MD-11 and the 747-400(F). And I was thinking that my first flight will involve GND(D)-TWR(D)-CTR-APP-TWR(A)-GND(A). With Centre vectoring me onto my enroute track from the terminal area. Then selecting IAP app, flying an instrument approach I know very well. I don't use AI Traffic (performance issue, traded AI for scenery complexity etc), so no congestion issues as I get established on my approach. Handover to TWR, expecting the landing clearance 4-5nm from the THR, should not be too demanding (think I'll check out the Missed Approach segment on my second test flight, to see how it works). But enough said! I need to do the things you have suggested and GET READY FOR THE RC EXPERIENCE!!! Thank you Ron for your extensive explanation on what I need to do. It is guys like you who make forums an invaluable source of information. Subsequent questions on RC operation will be posted as a new thread!
  8. Hi Ron Followed your instructions to the letter, and RC seems to work without flaws! Many thanks for your help I will of course have to complete a flight before I give my RC installation a clean bill of health, but it looks very promising I have several more questions to ask, but I'll read the manual and search the forums first. There's is however two question I need to ask before I go explore: Is there a way to reset the RC<->FSX connection without closing the RC application running outside FSX? The reason I ask, is that I forgot to set correct MSA in the "Controller Info" window before I clicked "Run RC". Despite the button's unambiguous name, I didn't expect the application to close when I clicked "Quit RC". Only to revert RC to its previous state: Disconnected from FSX. It's not a big deal, just want to make sure I haven't missed something. Second question: The "quick start" manual states that the flightplan used in RC must also be loaded in FSX? Have I understood this initialization step correctly?
  9. Hi Ron! Thank you, I really look forward to my first flight with realistic ATC . Yes it did! Yep it did! After a reboot, just to check if WIN7 would "accept the MSSTDFMT.DLL into the fold", a window popped up from the tray. Telling me that my registry had over 400 errors! It was at this point I understood what I had done and became somewhat agitated. Revo Uninstaller was launched without delay, and hopefully it got rid of everything the fixer installed on my system. Ok Ron, sounds like a plan. Stand-by for update
  10. I did the stupid mistake and installed the fixer (Haste and ignorance made me install this wretched pushware, there should be a law against these crapware peddlers. I feel violated every time I need to spend time uninstalling them!), It seems I'll never learn :( Anyway, a quick search confirmed that the DLL was present in the System32 folder. Another MSSTDFMT.DLL was present in the SysWOW64 folder, possibly the 32-bit version (WIN7 64-bit is my OPSYS). But unlike Todd's case, it didn't stop RC from complaining : "Class not registered". The error message popped up just like it did before the aforementioned "fixer" debacle. I know of a possible fix for this, but haste and ignorance is not going to get the better of me this time! And before I proceed, I want someones opinion on my possible solution: In my research, I found that a new DLL needs to be registered in the Windows registry for it to function properly. And this is done using the command line utility Regsvr32, with the following syntax : %windir%\SysWoW64\regsvr32.exe %windir%\SysWoW64\msstdfmt.dll (This syntax will register the 32-bit version. A bit odd with the "64" present in the foldername, but this is where the 32-bit version DLLs are stored on a 64-bit system.) But this thread got me second guessing myself: If I understand you correctly Todd, all you did was to copy the MSSTDFMT.DLL to your System32 folder, and do a reboot? Then problem solved? If this is true, then my setup should also work!! I'm proceeding with caution now, don't want this to blow up in my face :( Any thoughts ? PS: You can't really blame me for being hasty. Reading the reviews on Radar Contact made me want this software up and running yesterday
  11. It must be so close now, perhaps we're looking at dates that has some sort of symmetry (or rather some symbolic numerical aesthetics') : 1. July 10. July 15. July Provided the Dev team decides not to take any vacation. If so then we're looking at: 1. August 10. August 15. August Who's holding the pot?
  12. Lol! Can't argue with that, EU are trying to enforce rules with new rules, I know, I've seen it. But not to worry. after installing 385 MB of EKBB scenery, with an EXE installer (impressive freeware really). The charts where included! I also found German AD charts at EUROCONTROL's EAD BASIC:http://www.ead.eurocontrol.int/eadcms/eadsite/index.php.html Don't know if they got them all, but it is a place to start You need to register...
  13. I agree, but when you bounce, and you don't feel the bounce, you're past the point of making a go/no-go decision before RWY contact. And a bounce is a go-around situation (If I understand the numerous posts on PPrune on the subject). I know that your ROD right before contact is a good indicator if there's gonna be a bounce, facilitating the decision to hit TOGA before the bounce. But personally I don't have the skills and knowledge (on how to scan before contact) to monitor my ROD while I'm aiming for the touchdown markers. Too much going on... for me at least. That's why I think that this will become a problem one day. And I will bounce right off the RWY, spoilers deployed and all, hitting the dirt hard. maybe even upside down, with flames. Well, at least I'm wide awake while landing the "scud". And it is somewhat thrilling to do a perfect landing with this bird in particular
  14. Yep Kenny! The Deputy Head of the AIS publications of Ukraine, Mikhail Demchenko kindly informed me in an e-mail that this is how they do it in Ukraine. In Norway it's free, as it is deemed public information. I tried to get charts from Germany, AIS publications has been outsourced there. So they went for my wallet there too!! (Found charts on VATSIM Germany, so no prob). But it is wrong! Just plain wrong! Reason: safety safety safety! But no tip Kenny? Morten
  15. Hi folks! This is perhaps not the best place to post this question, so please inform me if this is a no no. Couldn't find a category that fits the bill. Did a search, nothing came up. Feel comfortable with you guys (haven't signed up on many forums, just this one and two more. I think), so here goes: I found a freeware airport scenery of Borispol Kiev Ukranie. So I wanted some charts for this AD. This page: http://192.206.28.84...IPS_online.html had links most to places. But... Ukraine AIS is off limits unless you pay, wait for it... 735,17 USD!!! So that's not gonna happen... I've checked Navigraph, they have them, but I'm just out of credits. So I wondered if any of you gents (or ladies) have a suggestion before I get out my credit card and let Navigraph have some more of my hard earned money. Morten
