  1. Len, Have a look at my ILS tutorial series here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rfresh1011 Kyle and some others here on this forum were involved in helping me to make this series. I think watching a couple of the ILS approach videos will help you a lot.

  3. I'd like to announce the end of my 737NGX training videos. I have just completed the last 4 videos covering the MCP panel (these 4 videos were on the LNAV switch). This year (2015), I am embarking in a new direction in regards to making training videos. Many thanks to all of you in 2014 for the kind words and emails that I've received. And thanks again to my review team for helping to make these 737NGX videos the best they can be. The home page of my new training website provides more details on what I will be up to this year in regards to making new training videos. My new website is located here: www.7x7SimTraining.net
  4. Just an update: I have finished the third and final phase of my Generic Electronic Flight Bag within my SimChecklist application. This is ver 4.3. I now use it all the time in flight to manage my IFR plates, SIDS and STARS, etc. It will work in any cockpit and is modeled after the 777 EFB but I have designed in more capability. You can, for example, launch a third party application such as a moving map app, and pull it into the EFB screen and run it inside the EFB itself. I built an editor inside the EFB so you can create great looking documents (in RTF format) and display them in the EFB. I've created some ILS and Missed Approach notes in RTF format that I keep in my EFB for quick access. My latest 737NGX training videos cover the LNAV switch on the MCP and in that flight demo I fully utilize the EFB so if you watch that LNAV video (4 videos total on the LNAV switch) series you'll see how I use it in flight. I am currently working on finally finishing the Dash8 Q400 Fuel Planning window. Once I finish that, I will start work on integrating FSUIPC and WideFS into SCL so SCL can be run and controlled on a second PC from your main PC (customer request).
  5. I just finished ver 4.3...this is the third and final release phase for the EFB. Ver 4.3 added support to run 3rd party apps such as Plan G with its moving map display right inside the EFB screen. Now i will finish the Dash8 Q400 Fuel Planning window which will be ver 4.4. I should be releasing this in about a week or two.
  6. Jordan1995, on 02 Jan 2015 - 1:38 PM, said: Ralph I appreciate your videos. Do you plan any RNAV app videos? Jordan, Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to post on AvSim. I am going to make a formal announcement later this month but here's a peek at what I am up to in the video production department. To answer your question up front: no I don't plan to do any RNAV 737NGX videos. In 2015 I will be moving to another aircraft platform with my training videos. The B-777. I am going to organize in a slightly different manner than I did with the 737NGX videos. With the 737NGX I had a team of reviewers (Kyle here was one of them) who checked my videos for accuracy and content, etc. before I released them. I think together Kyle, myself, Michael Cubine, Matt (a real world 737NG pilot and Eric Martin, all made and contributed to making some outstanding 737NGX training videos. The MCP series, taking over 20 videos to cover, is the most comprehensive MCP training series you will find anywhere! As I've always said, my hat is off to my review team for helping to make these videos happen. With the 777 I am assembling a team of real world 777 pilots: a current 777 pilot, a retired 777 pilot and one active 777 sim instructor working for a major airline in the US. These folks will serve as my video reviewers for my 777 training videos and, like the 737NGX, I will be following the Boeing standards as far as procedures go. For anyone who might ask what will my 777 training videos look like, just watch a few of my 737NGX videos and you'll see my teaching style and structure. My teaching style and the structure will be the same. The 777 sim product I am planning to use is the CaptainSim 777. They have been very responsive to my inquiries and have agreed to partner with me and have given me permission to use their 777 product in my training videos. Due to software licensing issues, I need the permission of any 777 sim maker before I can actually use their product in my training videos. I don't need to go into the details, so I will just say that PMDG was unresponsive to my multiple inquiries over a 3 month period to work with them and their 777 product for my videos. So, I had no choice but to finally give up on them. I may end up buying their 777 product to check my scripts against their implementation of the 777, but I won't be actually using their product in my videos. I cannot get their owner, Mr. Randazzo to return my phone calls. I would like to make sure my training videos work for both products as those are the main two 777 sims out there. I think I owe the flight sim community this much. I might also add that Wilco was unresponsive as well to my inquiries regarding using their 777 product in my videos. I think in an ideal world, it would have been nice to get agreements from both CaptainSim and PMDG to use both of their products in my training videos. I think this would have been in the best interest of the flight sim community. But I got approval only from CaptainSim, so it will be their 777 used in my videos. In 2014 I made 36+ 737NGX videos and am currently working on my last two videos covering LNAV on the MCP. I wanted to get these done before the end of 2014 but it didn't happen. I will finish and post them this month. That will then be all for the 737NGX for awhile.
  7. 1. I cover how to manage your speed and flaps. You may find that useful. 2. Kyle is correct. ..listen carefully to what he is saying.
  8. You might want to watch my How To Fly A Perfect ILS Approach video. It was made to eliminate those problems! My signature has my YouTube Channel link.
  9. I have just released a generic Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) app for anyone who is interested in having their IFR approach plates (SIDS, STARS, etc) viewable in their jetliner cockpit. I wrote my first EFB to support the CaptainSim 777 EFB and then was asked to make a generic one that can be used in any cockpit. I have made two Video Tutorials here explaining how this EFB works in my ver 4.2 SimChecklist app: http://www.7x7simtra...net/777-3/free/ The ver 4.1 video shows how the PDF content (IFR charts) works.
  10. It sounds like you didn't have the instrument plate for the approach you were trying to fly...otherwise, you'd know the GS intercept altitude. Approach plates can be downloaded here: fltplan.com or SkyVector.com. Grab the plate you need and study it so you are comfortable with it. I made a few 737NGX training videos on how to fly the perfect ILS approach on my YouTube Channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/rfresh1011
  11. You may be interested in some of the 737NGX training videos I made. My YouTube Channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rfresh1011
  12. I just released ver 4.2 for the Electronic Flight Bag...I added three content types: Rich Text Format (RTF), TXT docs and Images. The RTF is the most important addition of these. This took longer that I thought because once I got into it, I saw the value of being able to create/edit RTF/TXT content right inside the EFB screen, so I decided to build an editor inside it with a pop-up editing menu. Turned out pretty nice I think. I'm going to rest for a short while then start in on the 3rd phase of the EFB: 3rd party application support. You'll be able to suck in any app that is running when you start SCL and suck it into the EFB screen to actually have it continue to run. I've been told that some of the GA simmers have moving maps and would like this capability inside their cockpits. My 737NGX YouTube Channel has two video tutorials I just made covering the 4.2 additions: https://www.youtube.com/user/rfresh1011
  13. Here is my advice from someone who has brought some non-pilots and some private pilots into the full flight sims during my training career: 1. Don't waste any time flying with the AP. Hand fly it all the time. 30 mins is extremely short and will be gone before you know it (really). You'll want to feel how it flys in your own hands. You don't need to fly it with the AP. Why? Because you can do that at home with your own sim! So don't waste any level D sim time flying with the AP. 2. Make sure your seat is adjusted!!!!! Remember, you've never actually adjusted the seat before so make sure your feet are ok on the rudder pedals...too many first timers 'rush' this and end up having control problems flying because they are not in the correct seat position. So, take your time and make sure your seat is adjusted properly for you. 3. You will get sensory over load and tunnel vision. So expect it. 4. The controls will not feel like your controls at home...they will feel different...so expect it and don't be surprised...they will feel much heavier that what you are used to. 5. Your right seat instructor (where I would sit) probably won't be pushing any MCP buttons for your FD...BUT...he or she might since you know what an FD is and how to fly one. Most of the folks I put in the left seat didn't know what an FD was so I had to skip it due to time. 5. Take off and fly a landing pattern circuit...you don't need a SID or a STAR...all you need is the ILS data and fly downwind 8 to 12 miles before turning onto base (your instructor will tell you when to turn base). Fly the ILS with the FD on. If you try to fly with the FD off, you'll be flying what we call 'raw data' and that's extremely difficult to do if you're not a real pilot with some instrument time. So, don't waste an approach trying to fly raw data...use the FD from the get go. You're only going to get 2 landings in 30 minutes!!! 6. Now for the tunnel vision stuff: you're going to find out that flying the 737 is like doing three things at once which they say is how you fly a helicopter. After you TO and level off on the down wind leg, somewhere there your instructor will say watch your airspeed (if you're manually handling the throttles) so you'll focus on the airspeed and the throttles. Then he'll say watch your altitude and you'll focus on pitch to get back on altitude. Then he'll say watch your heading, and you'll bank to correct your heading. This cycle will repeat. So don't be surprised. If your a real pilot you may not have this problem because you will be used to how to juggle these three things without thinking about it. But if you're not a real pilot, you'll probably get tunnel vision and lose track of one of these parameters and when focusing back on one, lose track of the others, etc. 7. Don't spend any time on pre-flighting the cockpit. You will have absolutely no time for that. Let the right seater scan the panels and get it all set and ready for TO. Do a quick engine start. If you try to start the engines normally, you'll eat up too much ground time. If you try to ask him any preflight questions you'll eat into half of your 30 mins before you realize it and then get only one landing in. So, that's my advice...your mileage may vary...but good luck and have FUN...!!!
  14. Phase I is available now. I'm releasing the generic EFB in three phases: Phase 1 - Release Candidate (RC) 4.1 is out now on my download website at www.SimChecklist.net. Phase 1 implements PDF content. I did this first because the CS 777 EFB doesn't support a PDF reader inside their EFB. Approach plates have to be in image format. This is OK but if you try to zoom in you lose some sharpness. Since I didn't have access to their code, my hands were somewhat tied in making my IFR Approach Plate interface work with their 777 EFB. They do have some good flexibility which allowed me some room to make my EFB design work with their product. However, there was nothing I could do about them not supporting a PDF reader. I wanted a PDF reader because when you zoom you don't lose your sharpness. This is more critical for IFR Enroute Charts because they are so big and as an image, you can't zoom in too much. As a PDF (from the FAA website) you can zoom in all you like and still keep it sharp as a tack. Thus, when I decided to write my own generic Electronic Flight Bag add-on to my SimChecklist app, I had a blank canvas. So the first thing I did was add a PDF reader for the IFR plates. So, RC 4.1 can read any PDF content and, at this time, only PDF content. Turns out getting a PDF reader component inside a windows app is extremely expensive, so I went with using the Adobe Reader engine, which is free. What this means is that you must have the Adobe reader installed on your windows machine in order for my EFB to render PDF files. RC 4.2 which I am about to release, adds 3 more data content types: Images, Rich Text Format (rtf) and plain text files. In addition, I have built an editor inside the EFB so it will now be easier to create RTF and Text documents right inside the EFB and I will do a video tutorial on this wonderful feature. It turned out terrific, especially for RTF documents. So, phase 2 is the RC 4.2 which is almost finished. I should be releasing this weekend. Watch the download website page for RC 4.2. Phase 3 will most likely get released in Jan 2015 and that will support 3rd party window apps such as moving map displays that you can suck inside the EFB and display! The generic EFB can be used 'on top' of any flight simulator. I fly the 737NGX, which doesn't have its own EFB, but now I have one for it...!!!
  15. Yes I'm the developer of SimChecklist and I recently added a feature to allow it to manage approach plates for the CS 777 Sim product using their EFB which the 777 has. When I posted my YouTube tutorial on how it works I received a lot of emails asking if I could develop one for use in any sim cockpit. So I created a generic EFB with many more features since I have more control. I'm about to release version 4.2 which will add more content support. I will do a video on that very soon. Then I will start on the 3rd EFB phase which will add built-in 3rd party app support such as Plan G3 which will display it's moving map on the EFB screen!
  16. Electronic Flight Bag coming soon...to a cockpit near you...!!! http://www.SimChecklist.net/Dash8Q400EFB.jpg
  17. Yes, you can use any ILS SOP you wish...I was just giving you the Boeing standard. I don't know what other carriers do. But pick an ILS procedure to follow and use it.
  18. Doesn't Matter - those steps are the same for a coupled approach or hand flown approach...the answer to your question is still in step 5.
  19. Here is the Boeing standard that I use. It will answer your question: item 5. 1. Approaching localizer intercept heading: Flaps 1 (Vref + 50). Flaps 5 (vref + 30). 2. On localizer intercept heading: ILS tuned and identified. LOC and GS pointers shown. Call out "Localizer alive". When "Cleared for the approach" arm APP. Second AP CMD. 3. Localizer Capture Set final approach course heading on MCP. 4. Glide Slope Alive. Call out "Glide slope alive". Gear down. Flaps 15 (Vref + 20). Arm speekbrake. 5. Glide Slope Intercept Landing flaps (Vref + 5). Set missed approach altitude. Do the landing checklist. Short Final Call Outs Crossing FAF Fix Name. Altitude checks - No flags.
  20. Hi Vernon Also take a look at my YouTube Channel on the 737NGX -- specifically how to fly a perfect ILS approach -- I cover exactly when to put the flaps out starting from 0 to landing flaps. Keep in mind I follow the Boeing ILS standard procedures. My YouTube Channel is here: https://www.youtube.com/user/rfresh1011
  21. Yes, the CS 777 has one. I just installed CS 777 this week. Here is what it looks like: http://www.simchecklist.net/EFB.jpg The graphics work of the panel is very nicely done. As is the CDU, which is very detailed and impressive (the way it looks) and second to none. I have the PMDG 737NGX so I know what their CDU looks like and while I don't have their 777 yet, I've seen some highly detailed images of their CDU. I feel safe in saying the graphics of the CS 777 CDU and EFB are second to none in quality. I can't say that with some of their other instrument displays but their EFB and CDU are impressive indeed. I have not had a good opportunity yet to do a deep dive on the EFB unit but from what I could see with my initial look: 1. All the buttons are functional around the edges. The Camera button just shows a static image so I don't think there are any real outside cameras feeding into the EFB but I am not 100% sure on that. 2. CaptainSim has provided what they call 'educational' and 'learning' content. This means while there are SIDs and STARs, etc. it is limited data. But the data that is there is fully functional in zoom and paging, etc. I have read you can load in all of your data you wish but I have not learned how to do that yet. I have not been able to dig any deeper than this, but I'm guessing there is no ability to 'hook' any chart subscriptions into it...but maybe someone with more time on this machine can better expand on that issue.
  22. That might be something I could look into creating when I get some time. My SimChecklist product is an 'outside' application. I could look into creating another application, an 'outside of FSX' EFB application that can display airport diagrams and show, in real time, where your aircraft is as you move around the airport. I would have to 'hook' into the FSX APIs to see if the lat/long data was available to grab and pull into my app. I already have the FSX SDK installed on my PC when I started designing my SimChecklist app. If the lat/long data is available via the API, then I could figure out how to translate those coordinates into the airport diagram in real time. That's a good idea...wish I had more free time to dig into this but I'm working full time on several flight sim projects as it is...I need about 12 more hours in a day lol.
  23. Ahhh but the airlines often can't wait years to put a specific, more desired aircraft into service...they often buy and put 'temporary' aircraft into service, knowing in a few years it will be replaced with what they really need...the 777x is a good example of this...
  24. "...My EFB is my Windows taskbar. I have charts and FCOM open..." that's a great solution and one that I use, but its not an EFB solution...I think those who want an EFB solution want the 'total immersion' of the flight sim world, but I think we now know that is too expensive unfortunately.
