Graphics card replacement

Featured Replies

Hi,I have been thinking about replacing my Geforce 4200 TI with a Geforce 6600GT. Has anyone else made this change and if so has it improved FS at all?RegardsDrayton

You should see a nice improvement visually and some on FPS. I had a G4 4600 and upgraded to a 9800 pro, which is a step below the 6600 and it was night and day difference for me.BTW before the forum police get you, you might want to lose 2 of your banners, only allowed 1 here.Regards, MichaelKDFWhttp://www.calvirair.com/mcpics/mcdcvabanner.jpgCalVirAir International

Michael,Thanks for your advice..signatures removed also ;)

Be aware that the 6600GT will try to apply AA/AS to clouds which can cause a nasty drop in fps. The 9800 pro and all ATI cards do better at this altyhough there overall fps may be less.allen

Is there a way to disable the card from applying these settings. At present I have my card set to application controlled for Anti Aliasing and image setting set to quality.I dont want to spend a lot of money to find that FS is worse if I decide to go for the 6600GTThanks for your help.Drayton

I had the same card as you and upgraded to a 9800 Pro for about

I was intending to upgrade from a GE4 ti4200 to the 6600GT and was persuaded to consider the ATI route. I went for the X800XL at only slightly increased cost and have never looked back, in fact the X800XLK is closer to the 6800GT in performancd parameters. See discussions on the hardware forum here and at FlightSim, doing a search under my name - lots of good advice from people. One thing I like about the ATI there is no drop in fps in clouds.NigelVancouver

i went from a G4 ti 4600 to a 6600GT and to be honest i did not see any difference in FS performance, although they where gains and losses in other games (GPL is lousy, but LFS is great), but it should be better for new games. that said it was pretty cheap so i can't moan to much.

>I have been thinking about replacing my Geforce 4200 TI with a>Geforce 6600GT. >Has anyone else made this change and if so has it improved FS>at all?Looks like some mixed opinions here, but I can tell you that in May I did a similar upgrade - Ti4200 to 6800GT (AGP). Fry's had a killer Memorial Day sale - $150 after rebate. Yep, that's a 6800, not a 6600, so YMMV.The most noticeable, and pronounced, improvement was framerates with significant weather. My Ti4200 has always been fine in clear skies, but bogged down as low as 4-6FPS in the mountains in heavy weather. By "heavy weather", I specifically mean complex weather scenarios with multiple layers of clouds, each layer having some amount of transparency (3/8 to 6/8 typically). I can lock the 6600GT at 30fps and never see a dip now under any weather scenario.WinXP SP2, homebrew computer with Asus mobo and Athlon XP 2600, 1GB DDR memory.
