February 22, 200719 yr Author Thanks! I will try to expand the benchmark a little bit and make it more convenient with an integrated FPS counter. Eventually, I will set up a website were we can store everything in a database for quick comparison of different specs. I don't expect a lot of responses in here. Soon this thread will be gone from the main page and the benchmark is lost in all the other new thread. We'll see, maybe with a dedicated website we can establish a more permanent exposure?Pat
February 22, 200719 yr Seems like someone had a web site like that, with bench comparisons, and that was way back in years past... This is the first time I've done anything in a remotely scientific way, so thanks for setting up. Unlike my core2, my X800XL does not overclock much. I was hoping to see more benefit from the CUP overclock, but it's not very apparent here. Maybe graphics is a bottleneck, but then I look at Manny's result with an 8800 and start to despair!

With world-of-ai I had just 17 in the right click drop down list. Just curios if you had a lot more and that is absorbing your system resource. With an 8800GTX I was hoping you would kill my benchmark and I could go out and buy one.
February 22, 200719 yr Author I went ahead and overclocked my system. First I took my AMD X2 4800+ (Toledo) from 2.4GHz to 2.8GHz. To my surprise the benchmark stayed exactly the same (20: 8+12).After that I overclocked the GPU (PCIe Bus and Core Clock) while returning the CPU to stock speeds and the benchmark increased by about 5 points. So, I somehow assume that my GPU (7600GT) is the major bottleneck here.Pat
February 22, 200719 yr That's largely what I saw, I did not get the expected gain from overclocking the CPU. I can't overclock my X800XL by more than a few percent. It would be interesting to hear other feedback conerning overclocking GPU.
February 22, 200719 yr Author Well, what is surprising that everyone seems to be so focused on CPU clock rates. With my setup, I seem to have his a wall here where my mid-sized GPU is clearly the bottleneck. I will upgrade next week to a 8800GTS. I am not holding my breath, but based on the feedback and benchmark results in here, I am expecting a 10-15 increase in the benchmark. If not, I'll just bang my head and wait patiently for the patch.Pat
February 22, 200719 yr CPU helps with Autogen...doesn't your benchmark take place at 3500 to 5000 feet? There may not be as much Autogen going on at that altitude...I am guessing that the higher you go, the more the pendulum swings towards the GPU as far as rendering terrain.
February 22, 200719 yr I can definitely see a 7600GT bottlenecking a 4800+ cpu...RhettAMD 3700+ (@2310 mhz), eVGA 7800GT 256 (Guru3D 93.71), ASUS A8N-E, PC Power 510 SLI, 2 GB Corsair XMS 2.5-3-3-8 (1T), WD 250 gig 7200 rpm SATA2, CoolerMaster Praetorian case Rhett 7800X3D ♣ 96 GB G.Skill Flare ♣ Gigabyte 4090 ♣ Crucial P5 Plus 2TB
February 22, 200719 yr I'd say with bloom on and water turned up and that AI traffic and autogen are at relatively docile levels, that your benchmark scenario may be more GPU than CPU bound, hence explaining your results. Personally, I run FSX with more opposite settings (ie no bloom, water low 2.x, lots of AI and autogen), hence CPU makes the biggest diffference for me.I'll give your benchmark a try at different CPU and GPU clock speeds and see if I come up the same.Gary 9800X3D | 4090 | 64GB | 2+1TB NVME | 2TB SSD | 2TB HDD | 85/50/43” TVs | Quest 3 | DOF H3 Motion Rig | Buttkicker | T.16000M Flight Kit MSFS @ 4K Ultra DLSS Performance FG 80 FPS | VR VDXR Godlike 80Hz SSW | MSFS VR DLSS Quality, Ultra Preset - Windows 11 Acer Nitro 5 | i5-11400H | RTX 3060 6 GB | 32GB DDR4 | 15.6" FHD IPS 144Hz | 2 x 512 GB SSD | Windows 11
February 22, 200719 yr Author If I take all C2D @ 3.4GHz:There is not much difference between fatboyslim's X800XL (33) and Manny's 8800GTX (35), which is pretty interesting. That would indicate that getting a 8800 at this points would make little to no sense at all. Even fatboyslim's GPU overclock had no effect whatsoever, which sustains this theory even more. DescendDescents config get a slightly higher benchmark (41), but his 8800 is overclocked. The X800XL is about even with my 7600GT. Yet I get only about 23 at best, a difference of about 30%, but I do have MyTrafficX running which is a huge resource hog - without I got 28.On the other hand overclocking my 4800+ X2 doesn't seem to do anything to the benchmark, which somehow contradicts the above statements. What do you guys think? Would a benchmark WITHOUT any traffic be more valuable after all?Keep it coming!Pat
February 22, 200719 yr Renaming default.xml certainly gave a boost toFSX Benchmark: 27(8+19)Definetely worth trying out for non-benchmark flying :-) Lars
