Question for ATI owners

Featured Replies

Do you have the same problems with the DX10 preview as we poor NVIDIA ?I mean, flashing runways - taxiways, no ground directions, missing lights in DS10 preview mode.I do like the improved lightning and the shadowing in the cockpit, yes the shadowing bitmap is rough, but it is helping me a lot with directional awareness.thanks, Jan

Yeah that's what I would like to know too. For ATi's Radeon HD 3870 now under $200, it would be nice to get 1 or 2 if it has no issues.

Where are all the ATI owners out there? I'd like to get an answer to this question too. Does NVidia own the market?Stan

I switched over to Omega drivers. That helped a bit. You might try them.

I'm looking for that information as well - it seems very few of us are running Vista AND a DX10 capable ATI card. I get quite a boost in FPS in DX10 preview mode, which is why I'm so interested.Etienne

All ready answered by Nick N on the first page of the Nvidia 174.12 BETA Drivers thread heres he's post if you missed it Posted by Nick N "I am using a 3780 X2 ATI for Vista and DX10... and my use of Vista is only for testing, and, even with that I do not use DX10 in FSX with Vista except where I was required to test the DX10 results, which... hmmmm OK, I will probably get smacked like I did posting benchmarks last year, but ... it put Nvidia to shame for no issues and solid performance. I would not go there with current Nvidia offerings and regular use of FSX Just my opinion"

Hi Rhett, LOL, not quite, maybe quietly enjoying? :-) Here's my DX10 report with Radeons: Once a month and after new drivers, I check the DX10 Preview (in the past with Vista32 and Vista64, now with Vista64 alone) to have a look. To date the results were always the same here: Vsync doesn't work although checked and certain FSX elements still don't display properly in DX10 mode. No joy, I can't stand being out of sync with my V. :-) But no artefacts like flashing runways etc. For DX10, Vista32 is maybe the better bet at the moment? A wild guess. In DX9 mode, the X3xxx are very good. My latest one is the X2 and the DX9 results are outstanding. No driver issues to my surprise. Post Catalyst 8.2 all is well and hibernation works. The IQ is amazing, although a wee tad worse than 8.1. The advantages in 8.2 outweigh those in Cat 8.1. FWIW, I did 2 system mods simultaneously, the card plus another 4GB of RAM. Very happy with the upgrade. LOL, now I'm getting CPU-cycle greedy again... :-) For me, despite not trying very hard at all to make it work, DX10 is still experimental food. Maybe Vista SP1 and future driver updates add some salt & pepper? Or the magic button I haven't found yet becomes visible? :-) Best wishes Jaap

I did hear that it was broken but I did not see it on my end... funny how software works. I am also running a modern motherboard and DDR3.

>>funny how software works.<< Indeed, Nick. :-) I've tried a couple of times but Vsync never stuck in DX10 on 2 machines and 3 different DX10 Radeon adapters. I'll certainly give it another go now you say it works, thanks for the infos. Kind regards Jaap

Could it be the chipset? See, this is where I do come up a bit short... I am not a graphics code guru so I don't have the skill sets to nail something like that down all the time.I am on a test motherboard/chipset with that rig so it is possible the combination of the newer design + the X2 is allow that to work... not sure.I would not use anything other than DDR3. I know many people say it

I understood that not all games use both cores on an 3870X2. Only newer games use both cores, older ones only use 1. Am I correct? And, biggest question, does FS2004 uses both cores on the card?Looking for an upgrade from 1950PRO to 3870X2 myself, mainly for FS2004, to give better performance for AA and AF @ 1600x1200. Happy with CPU performance. (E6600 @ 3.4 Gh)Lennart

If you want good AA and AF at that resolution, the 8800 GTX is better. It beats the 3870 X2 at high resolutions with AA and AF cranked up, I read an ExtremeTech benchmark on it:"It seems the 3870/X2 just cannot keep up with nVidia at high resolutions with AA and AF cranked up." Is what I think they said. And, on NewEgg.com, an EVGA 8800 GTX Superclocked is about the same price, if not cheaper, than an X2.BoeingGuy

I opened this new thread specifically with the question : do you see the artifacts on ATI DX10 compatible cards, as they arereported for nvidia cards, in FSX DX10 preview. An example of a NON answer : "If you want good AA and AF at that resolution, the 8800 GTX is better. It beats the 3870 X2 at high resolutions with AA and AF cranked up, I read an ExtremeTech benchmark on it:"It seems the 3870/X2 just cannot keep up with nVidia at high resolutions with AA and AF cranked up." Is what I think they said. And, on NewEgg.com, an EVGA 8800 GTX Superclocked is about the same price, if not cheaper, than an X2."Sure, it tells me about AA and AF, but nothing about the flashing textures or missing lights. Up to now, only one person managed to answer my question, thanks baksteen33 (en ik hoop dat je beter vliegt dan een baksteen ;-) ).Nicks answer does not count, because it was burried in another thread :-) .I hope I do not hurt anyone feelings, and I do appreciate all feedback, but I would also appreciate a real answer about my question.Image Quality, fluidity and no artefacts are more important for me then framerates. I like the HDR lightning, but I can't stand the flashing textures. Or, for the budget limited, if ATI does not have those issues, it is clearly a driver problem, and NVIDIA owners can hope that they get solved (some day?).Jan

The margins are small however and I'm a little worried about Nvidia's drivers. Quite happy with ATI's driver policy and expecting them to become even better for the 3870x2. Als read about the troubles in FSX with 8800 cards. Choises, choises... . The more I read, the little I know!
