SP3 issues with FS9

Featured Replies

I installed the SP3 upgrade to XP the other day and since doing so, when I boot up FS9 in full screen mode, the 3D aircraft selection window is black. If I use alt + enter and go to windowed mode, the 3D view returns no problem. When I fly in full screen mode the sim performs normally unless I try to pull up an app like FS Navigator in in which the main screen goes black except for the NS Nav screen. This didnt use to happen.Do I need to reinstall drivers or something?Eric

Running XP SP3 with no issues. Your video card and driver?Jim Harnes

Eric- if I recall, there have been other posts about problems with SP3.Serves to confirm my view that any ServicePack poses a risk to some systems. I regard SPs in the same way as TV ads for a new drug- "If you suffer from-- or experience these side effects, talk to your doctor---" Clearly SPs and new drugs cannot be tested universally. It is a statistical certainty that they will cause problems somewhere, somehow! A risk analysis would also weigh the possibility that an update might be designed to actually degrade performance and accelerate the transition to newer products- sometimes referred to as planned obsolescence. My solution? Avoid Updates like the plague- which sometimes they are!Alex Reid

No trouble here from sp3. I did come across 2 computers with AMD chips that did have problems. That is all straightend out. I can't think of any SP or update that I had to remove. I take that back; I can't run any nvidia drivers newer than 169.25. Try reinstalling the video drivers.Bob

Are you using NHancer? If not, it will most likely solve your problem.Jim Harnes

EricThis is probably nothing to do with WinXP SP3 its more likely to do with your AA (anti aliasing) setting. If that is >4 you will get a black screen in the aircraft preview. Its easy to fix, if you keep starting FS9 in "windowed" mode your preview should return. I thought that it had been fixed in >16x.xxx series? This might be useful: http://forums.nvidia.com/lofiversion/index.php?t22078.htmlRegardsPeter Hayes

OK, thanks, I got there but it appears that this update is for "XP Office" , I am pretty sure I have just plain old XP, do I install anyway?? Appreciate the help B42L8

Right click "My Computer" select "Properties". The pop-up will tell what SP you have. If it says "Service Pack 3", you are done. If not, select the "Automatic Updates" tab, turn on automatic updates. That will get the correct version. If you don't usually get auto updates , than you will see a big selection of things you may or may not want. If you have an AMD cpu, SP3 might cause a problem. There is a fix.Bob
