v5 pronounciations

Recommended Posts

now would probably be a good time to make a list a mispronounciations. more important than identifiying the ones that are mis-spoke, but to phonetically show how it is suppose to be pronounced. for instance, i still don't know how to pronounce dolomitihow about creating a new thread, with the word/words/place/name that is mispronounced, and the proper pronounciation.thanksjd
Good idea JD and maybe I can help with the pronunciation issue. I work for the national television and radio broadcaster in Australia (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) and we have a department specifically for correct pronunciation (we're raked over the coals by the public if we get it slightly wrong!). It uses an international standard for scripting pronunciation which may be of use here. It is reproduced below:Capitalised words are accented eg:Australia = os-TRAYL-yuh (NOT uhs-TRAY-yuh OR aws-TRAY-lee-uh OR uhs-TREL-yuh) Accomplish = uh-KUMP-lish Beijing = bay-JING (j as in 'jet', not zh as in 'beige')Pilatus = pil-AH-tusAmir Farid = ah-MEER fah-REED (pianist)Phonetic Legend:Symbol Sounda .. .. .. .. hatah .. .. .. .. artay .. .. .. .. payair . .. .. .. pair, dareaw .. .. .. ..paw, porke .. .. .. .. bestee .. .. .. .. sea, meeer . .. .. .. here, feari .. .. .. .. witigh . .. .. .. tie, myo .. .. .. .. potoh .. .. .. .. oak, so, lowoo .. .. .. .. put, bookooh . .. .. ..too, doow .. .. .. ..now, boughoy .. .. .. .. boy, foilu .. .. .. .. nutur .. .. .. .. fur, bird, learnuh*.. .. .. ..other, aboutooh(uh). .. ..toursh .. .. .. .. shop, surech .. .. .. .. chopzh .. .. .. .. measureg .. .. .. .. getj .. .. .. .. jety .. .. .. .. yetng .. .. .. .. song(ang)**. .. ..vin (in 'vin blanc')(ong)**. .. ..blanc (in 'vin blanc')kh .. .. .. .. loch, Bachth .. .. .. .. thindh .. .. .. .. then * the 'indeterminate' vowel ** nasalised vowelObviously there would need to be a complete list of names compiled using this system and then disseminated to all. Quite a task!Ken.

One of the RC4 controllers(an English accent) refers to "Suncountry" as "Sun County"I assume this airline is still in business as there is an active web site.Perhaps the developers could also look at the pronunciation of "Dolomiti" too. This refers to Air Dolomiti who fly turbo props over the Alps.Currently we get "DOLOMITRI" or "DOLOMITEY" as well as the correct one.I appreciate it's a difficult task with all the nationalities doing the files and the multitude of airline names to include. DOLOMITI=DOLL OH MEE TEE,all slurred together of course.Accent is on the "MEE"

Ken,Great idea! :( Another airport that is mispronounced in v4 by some is Malaga (LEMG).Using your rules it should be pronounced MALLER-guh rather than how some currently pronounce it as MA-lar-guh.Hope I got that right. Feel free to correct it.

Also, Stockholm Control has become Sweden Control. Additionally, change Tampere Control to Tampere radar. Rovaniemi Control is also now Rovaniemi Control Radar -- long callsign, isn't it...

In V4 Curacao is being pronounced by some controllers and pilots as "Cure-a-cow". While it should be pronounced as Cure-a-sow (pronounce "sow" same as e.g. the word "now").Some controllers do say it right, but not all of them.Jon

Bill,Thank you for pointing these out. I would suggest the correct pronunciations would be:Mon-tee-vi-DAYORe-sea-feyNot sure about Maiquetia. :(

Ray,Not all voices say those incorrectly, but some certainly do. I'm no Spanish speaker, but any research I have done suggests Maiquetia should be pronounced as mahy-ke-TEE-ah.Check this out: http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/maiquetiaBill
Thanks Bill. That pronunciation sounds clear enough.

Just found this thread, very ammusing!!!!You should hear some of my colleagues at work pronouncing "Oberpfaffenhofen" when giving clearances sometimes.Thing to remember is that most controllers can't even remember their own names, let alone pronounce names from some far flung country such as OZ-TRAILOR-A!!!!Sometimes having people saying things incorrectly is more realistic than you would believe :(
