ASA networking with Vista problem

Featured Replies

Hi - I have Vista 64 and have been attempting to network ASA with a second computer running Windows XP but have run into problems. I have changed the XP computer name to match the default name given to the Vista computer "WORKGROUP" and have shared Flight Simulator X, Flight Simulator X Files and FSX folders by right clicking, selecting the "Properties" tab then the "Sharing" tab, clicking on "Advanced Sharing" and selecting "Permissions" then "Add" which took me to another window where I pressed the "Find Now" button and scrolling down to NETWORK and adding it to the list and setting controls to allow "Full Control, Change and Read" after pressing allow and ok I saw a pop-up with the folders in FSX whizzing by in the window, perhaps it was the security settings being applied to these files. The reason I did this was because even with "Everyone" having full permission (Full Control, Change and Read) I still cannot view the Flight Simulator X folder from the XP computer as I receive a message saying I do not have permission to view it. I can however, view the Flight Simulator X Files and FSX folder's. Is it really that difficult to get things running?I followed the instructions here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vis...-windows-vista/ but I am still having problems.I have decided to start over and format my Vista installation and reinstall FSX, perhaps I will regain my security rights and everything from then on will be straightforward. Until then, if there is anyone out there who has been able to successfully network Vista and got ASX or ASA to work I would like to read what you have to say. Thanks,Rob

Hi All,Can any Vista users give Rob a hand here? From e-mails he already knows that I cannot as I don't use Vista. That is why I am giving this a friendly bump. Thanks,

Wow... nice bump.. I am in the same situation... so tonight i am going to figure this out. I was wondering if the op had any luck with this situation?thought your bump was a sign of good timing... had a little problem logging on to forums so i could respond to this post, glad you did :( ThanksSteve

I know sometimes XP and Vista give troubles together, but I have a desktop with Vista 64 and a Laptop with XP SP3 and they share everything, no problems. Please check if your network is set to Private (and not Public!), and share the folder with full control with everyone. Then go to the xp machine, network, and you should see the shared folders. Same from the Vista machine, under Network you should see the XP pc listed and the main one of course. Try to open your main pc "folder" and see if the folder you have just shared is in there. You said you already set the same workgroup name, so this should be enough.Hope this helps,Fede

Hi Fede - Thanks for the reply. I will have a look at both computers. One question; when I shared the Flight Simulator X, Flight Simulator X Files and FSX folders I noticed that the main FSX installation folder "share" tab was greyed out but the Flight Simulator X Files and FSX folders were sharable. Are you able to press the share tab on the main FSX installation folder? At that point I had not run the SimConnect.MSI file from the SDK folder so that may have been my problem.Anyhow I will see how things go and report back.Jim thanks for bumping the post.Rob

Before trying anything out wiith FSX and Simconnect and so on, you need to be certain that you can actually connect to the "server" (on which FSX runs) from the client (on which you want ASA to run).Without that basic connectivity up and running, it will never work.Create the shares on the server, setting the permissions so that you have write access on all the shares from the client. It may be a good idea to use the same username/password combination on both server and client on your internal network...Using the same workgroup allows you to connect via the netbios names and not solely via an IP address, remember that two PCs on the same network shouldn't have the same netbios name (that is the computer name, without any domain name qualifiers... something like FSXRIG or ASARIG)I followed the ASA network config guide... it worked a treat, first time!Andrew

I was forgetting one important thing: in the network settings page in Vista, make sure you have the correct green dots on, and disable "sharing with password" (I'm translating from my Italian system, try to understand), becuase XP will make troubles otherwise. At least to me...Fede

Hi Rob,I got some help setting up my network, so im no expert but on mine the network is public with 'public file sharing' on, and'password protected sharing' off. See image.David.

I have Vista64 on my FSX machine, and my ASA machine is a XP32 machine...and I network the two.I use a wireless network. Be very careful if you try to combine a wireless and wired network. The first thing I would do, is verify that the two machines are talking. I would do that by pinging the machines from each other;ping <your ip> from the command line. I would not use the computer names at this point. Can you verify that each machine can ping the other?

Thanks everyone, appreciate your help. With input from everyone I got ASA to run perfectly from my XP machine and it is communicating with the Vista64 machine beautifully.First off, I changed the XP computer name to match the Vista computer (in my case it was "WORKGROUP"), I then shared the Flight Simulator X (C:\Program Files (x86), Flight Simulator X Files (Username\Documents) and FSX (Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\FSX) by right clicking on each folder and selecting Properties\Sharing\Advanced Sharing, Check "Share this folder"\Permissions and under Share Permissions I allowed "Everyone" to have Full Control, Change and Read. Press Apply and Ok to get back to the Sharing tab in "Properties" and it should now read that the particular file is being shared. On each computer I accessed Windows Firewall. In Vista I added ASA by selecting "Allow a program through Windows Firewall" then clicking on the Exceptions tab and then clicked on "Add port" where I typed in Name: ActiveSkyAdvanced and Port number: 500 with TCP Protocol, repeating the same on the XP computer. That should do it, start ASA and make sure you select "User Defined Settings" from the weather tab in FSX.Thanks again,Robert

Okay.... I got vista seeing files on xp and xp seeing files on Vista. A problem started happening where now xp doesnt have permission to view folders which at the first couple of connections they could see fine. So when i start ASA on client pc i cant point it to the user folders on vista because for some reason i cant or dont have permission or i wore a blue shirt today or i actually woke up and breathed in air.Any one can help? Thanks in advanceSteve

??Can you ask your specific question again? I'm not sure what you mean or are asking in your post. Double check your permissions in the Vista file properties dialog; it's very non-intuitive.
