Summer Is Here, Time To Lower Your OC

Featured Replies

My SYstemi7920 @ 3.8 vista 64 / nvida 285. [HT off] / Air cooling. My system has been stable at 3.8 Ghz for a few weeks, i have been ramping up the OC since i got the system a few months back. But in last few days, the system tends to crash FSX at or near start of cruise phase of the.I reinstalled FSX, but did not fix the issueI lowered OC to 3.6 GHz still no luckI reinstalled vista & FSX still at my 3.8Ghz and still no luckUntil i lowered my OC 3.4Ghz, and now seems things are sorted out, but did not have time to make a full flight to make sure, considering i have spent last three days under the problem. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!FSX can be a very tasking Hobby indeed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. I will have to wait till autum to up my clock to 3.8 again, or if the cash comes my way, i will get one of those LN2 liquid nitrogen cpu coolers.Does anybody know if same LN2 will work across whole i7 range, cause i dont want to buy new cooler when i upgrade cpu from i7920 to something better. So for all those who took advantage of cooler weather to up thier OC like me, its time to start downing your cpu clocks, until autum or winter again.

Install water cooling before you up the voltage or you will kill the CPU.

I'd wanna take a look at those temps under RealTemp and CoreTemp just for reference. Run a Prime95 test for 24 hours to verify your stable @3.8 and that will let you know for sure.

If I understand you correctly, you are implying that the only way to succsesfully apply a decent OC that lasts, is by using liquid? That's crap! :( The Tj will protect the CPU at around 100 deg C and automatically throttle it down! I've been OC'ing on air for years and never burned one yet and many of these chips have been at OC settings for years, passed on to other rigs or family members. The only CPU I ever popped was when one of the HSF clips broke off the CPU socket itself while in use (older AMD sysetm before the Intel Core days). The entire HSF assembly fell away from the MB and the CPU blew a hole in the center of the die. Sounded pretty cool when it happened too.

If your room is 5C hotter, your CPU will also run 5C hotter. If you're at the limit of what the CPU can do, that will cause stability problems. Better to back down a bit on the OC to guarantee stability. You can't tell the difference between 25.6 and 24.9 FPS anyway...

That was my thinking, max core temp i get while siming is about 67c.In any case think, i have found the real cause of my crahses, it seems to be the new version of Gamebooster v1.1.I used the old v1.0 , but ever since i upgraded to 1.1 been getting crashes.

Is 67degC about typical for the top end temp for a clocked i7 on air?

Mine is in a hot closet and runs 4GHz in the mid-70s. The OCCT built-in alarm defaults to 80 degrees before ending its stability test. Anything stable under 80 is fine...

Sounds about like my E8500 if I were to place it in a hot closet in June. :) After I get FSX dialed in the way I want, I am going to start clocking it again, and see what kind of temps I get this summer. I seem to recall getting mid-60's in FS, and about 70 during a long Prime run.
