Low 'n Slow New York State Public Beta

Tiles are very limiting. Even when stuffed inside a vector you have no control over the position and orientation of houses. For really small towns you may not get any houses at all - you may end up with nothing more than a city park showing up.Larry

Doesn't it boil down to the 1km x 1km size of each land class tile? You would almost have to make a custom tile set for a small town with a main street and maybe one or two side streets and be able to control the rotation.

Well the initial closed Beta test of Low 'n Slow - New York State went very well, so I'm going to release the latest (hopefully final) update as a public beta in order to get as much feedback as possible. Here's the link: Low 'n Slow New York StatePlease remember this is still a beta version and may have a bug or two.To find out what this scenery is all about you can check out the following thread:Low 'n Slow InfoFor previous beta testors, it is recommended that you uninstall the previous beta version before installing the new version. Please post any bug reports or feedback here.Thanks.
Larry, I finally got the time to take a thorough trip across NY State, and I must tell you, what you have accomplished is of the highest quality overall.I cannot really nitpick at all, and nothing really struck me as being 'wrong'.Now, if we could only get you to do the same for the surrounding States :(Job very well done sir.

I just had to reply to this, only because I seen this when it was originally posted and that same night I was going to start a round robin of NY state airports. I generally spend a week flying 1.5 to 2.0 hour flights, low and slow in the default 172. I use ASX so depending on the weather I fly VFR or IFR. Fortunately tonight was the only night I had to do an IFR approach into Elmira. Anyways back to the point. I download and installed your scenery and was pleasantly surprised with the outcome. It was exceptional. I simfly a lot out of Elmira and Wellsville, two NY airports close to my hometown in PA, and I must say you have done an outstanding job. I appreciate the hard work you put into this and eagerly await your next project, if there is one. Cough, Cough, Pennsylvania. Thanks,From a happy simmer,Scott

Thanks for the feedback. It's getting closer to being ready but I'm currently addressing issues related to third party ground textures such as GEX. During development I worked with the stock textures and carefully picked land classes that would produce the effect I wanted. Unfortunately when people use third party ground textures the result is not nearly as good since the textures are changed significantly from stock. Since so many people are using them I felt I had to address the issue. There are 5 or 6 texture sets that are key to getting the look right, so I had to find a way to make Low 'n Slow use the stock FSX textures for those key sets. Since this whole project has been a "learn as I go" undertaking, it took a day or two to figure out a solution but it turns out its actually pretty simple. If I put the necessary stock FSX textures in the "Texture" subdirectory of my custom scenery it appears that FSX will use those textures for Low 'n Slow, and the custom textures many people have will be used everywhere else. This change should make sure everyone is getting the results I intended. Larry

Larry:That sounds great, that should nicely fix any of the little "oddities" from using GEX. Scott:Have you downloaded my Elmira airport? Jim

What!!! There is an Elmira Airport to download? Will have to check it out.

Be careful on that. Please make sure none of the "desert" textures sneak in. I hate those textures with a passion. They look positively awful.Tom

If you decide you want Low 'n Slow to use your current textures, all you will need to do is delete all the files from our custom "Texture" directory.Larry

I've posted a new Beta - link below. I've also moved the file to a faster server since it's now a much larger download than before. It includes the texture and autogen changes I mentioned previously as well as numerous enhancements to the scenery. It also includes four "Scenic Tour" flights that will take you around various parts of the state. The first tour will touch each of the three major regions of New York - Northern, Central & Southern Tier. The other three focus in depth on each of the regions. All you have to do is take off, turn on the autopilot, engage nav & altitude, then sit back and enjoy the view. Or fly them manually if you prefer. Please un-install the previous version before installing the new one. Also remember, this is still a Beta! There have been a few fundamental changes made since the last update which will hopefully give better results for people who are using third party ground textures. Larry, it really looks great! I've only had one short flight so far tonight, Fulton County to Glens Falls, but it looks fantastic. And you fixed the landclass at Fulton County very nicely. Thanks a lot for that.I'll be doing some more sightseeing for sure.Jim

Larry, this is really fantastic. I did notice one minor issue. Jim Cook has made a nice KELM scenery, but with the new version of low 'n slow (I am pretty sure I "went" to elmira with the first version and it was OK) there are some trees in the northwest parking apron. They are functioning trees--I taxied into one and was "crashed" back to KDSV, where my flight had started. I am pretty sure this apron was not in the FSX native KELM.But this is trivial. You have done a sensational job. Being an upstater for the last 30 years, but having done all of my real world flying in my Dad's Tripacer and Comnanche in southeast PA in the 60's and 70's, I used to sim mostly around the airports we flew in and out of---but for the past few weeks I am just touring around NY. Thanks so much.Gary

I'll take a look at KELM too. I can't remember if I placed any apron outside of the airport boundary or not. I try to keep changes confined to the airport boundary whenever possible so people won't have issues regardless of the landclass they use. I'll report back after I get a chance to take a look at it. Won't be till tomorrow evening.Jim

Gary,I just loaded up KELM to take a look. Half of the one apron is outside the airport boundary, but I have no trees anywhere around it, so maybe something else is going on. Maybe you could post a screenshot of what you're seeing. If needed, I can adjust the apron to be completely inside the airport boundary and send it to you.Jim

Thanks Larry. Just so happened I had a flight planned out from Laconia New Hampshire to Endicott Tri-Cities, so I installed the new version before climbing in the Viking. That took me over Albany, De Lancy (the area around which was particularly nice), then south of Binghamton and turned back to Tri-cities.Superb as usual, especially the approach to Tri-Cities, and the trees surrounding and weaving through the airport was really neat. First time I have landed here, I'll have to make a point to return. I have an issue with the river here, but it has nothing to do with your work.Going to take my new Lionheart Tailwind for a trip up to the northwest corner before heading back to Ohio. You have made New York hard to leave ;)
