June 26, 200916 yr This may not seem like a big deal to some, but to me it has a lot to do with that realism feeling in FSX. I recently got a new i-phone and have been enjoying some of the apps and games available for it. To my surprise, one of those apps happened to be X-Plane 9! More out of curiosity, I downloaded both the standard and Airline portions (they are sold separately). I wasn't expecting much, given the constraints of such a small screen as well as the phones tiny speaker but I have to say, I was impressed. Although the scenery is quite inadequate by FSX standards given the aviailable memory of the phone itself, something keeps me wanting to play with it whenever I can, and it does give a good impression or feeling of actually flying a real plane. I actually feel that I am moving which I don't get the illusion of in MSFS most of the time. The reason for this I think is the way most of the engine sounds are in FSX and earlier versions. Even in that little i-phone version of X-Plane, you get an incredibly realistic engine sound because it also includes wind sounds surrounding the plane as it travels through the air that seem to react to changes in the aircraft speed. For example, when in the Cessna 172, as you level off after a climb, you can hear the wind pitch change as if it is moving faster around the plane. When you slow down or apply flaps, the wind intensity diminishes as the drag increases. It's amazing how this makes you feel you are moving faster or slowing down when you hear the wind traveling around your airplane. I never get this sensation in MSFS except in some addon aircraft that have taken the time to improve on the default engine sound. (In my opinion the Level D 767 seems to have done this very well.)Is there any way to get the other planes in FSX to include better wind or slipstream sounds while in flight to add to the "as real as it gets" sensation of flight? June 26, 200916 yr When using Active Noise Reduction headphones in almost any GA aircraft, you no longer hear wind noise as it is the consistent, persistent sounds that are muted out first. In airliners the wind noise is almost irrelevant as the humming of the instruments and the air-conditioning is generally far more persistent.
June 26, 200916 yr Maybe you need SEX! :(LOLI'd agree with you for aircraft with quiet engines that slipstream noise would be good, but what I'd really like to hear in FS is the noise you get when sideslipping. That's the real disappointment for me with FS audio in light aircraft; you can cross the controls to insane levels and never hear a single complaining wind noise, which is nowhere near what happens in real life when you do it.I can often tell what airspeed my glider is going at just from the noise of the air over the canopy (especially with the DV panel open, which makes things very noisy indeed, since there is no engine noise to block it out), but for airliners I'm not so sure it would be that relevant. You certainly do get wind noise in airliners in the cockpit, the little turbulators you see below the windscreen on the 737 for example, are to reduce the noise from the windscreen, and one of the secondary reasons a lot of airlines faired over the eyebrow windows on their 737s was to reduce noise, but as snave points out, there's a lot of noise in an airliner from the instruments and such that would probably make it irrelevant. If someone brought out a sound mod that could realistically emulate sideslip noise though, I'd be reaching for my credit card for sure.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 26, 200916 yr I'd like to hear proper rpm/prop pitch sound changes. Xplane has it and it is very good. Geofa WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE-the best Flight Sim!
June 26, 200916 yr One or two FS add-ons have a decent stab at that audio for the engines, the Aerosoft FSX Catalina is one I've noticed it on; it has pretty good engine modeling all round actually and it has pretty convincing Bendix avionics too. Definitely one of the better FSX aircraft of late.Al Alan Bradbury Check out my youtube flight sim videos: Here
June 26, 200916 yr To my mind, Aaron Swindle's sound files are among the best for Flight Sim. He's done a wide variety of aircraft. The RAZBAM Intruder comes to mind as a good example, but I am going by memory here.Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIM
June 26, 200916 yr Has anyone played around with the "sound fader" section in fsx.cfg to see what effect they might produce?
June 26, 200916 yr Hi, I don't know if this is where this belongs but anyway,I recently was messing with my SB AUDIGY settings and found that if you set up for a small room and then go to the FSX and experience the " pull up pull up" thing it's really adifferent kick.Tony

June 27, 200916 yr Author I'd like to hear proper rpm/prop pitch sound changes. Xplane has it and it is very good. Thanks Geofa. Maybe that is what I am really talking about and I'm thinking it is the wind. Regards, Tom
