What Happened Over The Hudson?

Seems that zone is more uptight than Condoleeza Rice during a Congressional hearing. Wasn't that the same zone in which that Cirrus (?) was supposed to fly when it veered off and into a tall building a few years back?
That aircraft was northbound, supposedly in the corresponding East River corridor but obviously off course. I don't know whether the procedures have changed, nor do I know at what altitude the Class B airspace did/does begin for La Guardia, which the accident aircraft was close to.xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxLet's ask a different question. As regards ATC procedures, should anything change? We had a similar long-established GA aircraft corridor on the west side of Denver that got very busy sometimes. All it did was cause a head-on midair after which the corridor was immediately discontinued. Yet now the GA traffic in this area is completely chaotic -- nobody knows which way to look for uncontrolled traffic. (I see the show every day from our condo development's swimming pool.)Should the same thing be done around Manhattan? I'm not sure. The best minds in the business said Let There Be Corridors, and yet ...

I heard an op-ed on the radio compairing it to a highway accident. And do they close the highway?

Exactly....(though at least where I am when there is a fatality they usually do close the highway-for a short time )...and I always think when I am driving down a two lane highway at 65 mph and there is a car on the opposite lane literally 2 ft. from me how much trust we place not only in the other driver and what little margin of error there is-but how much more possibility of having an accident is (especially when you see the other driver on the cell phone or texting)...When was the last air collision in this area of New York, how many air collisions have there been in the past 10 years, and how does that stack up to the number of fatal car collisions that happen every day? Something the media hasn't mentioned...I did write a few emails off to news media to ask them why they had not made this compare. On one of my flight boards a member posted a recent truck accident where the truck went off the road and into a house destroying the entire house. He was wondering why that didn't make national news. But then the second biggest terrorist act in the US was done with trucks and fertilizer... haven't seen any restrictions placed on trucks or fertilizer because of this-but sure have seen a lot of restrictions placed on GA aviation-even though no terrorist acts have been done with GA aircraft.Crazy....

I think he simply couldn't see the chopper. We have heavy heli-training at Rowan County (my home airport) because of the National Guard being based there along with a helicopter flight school. They're tough to spot! From the rear of most aircraft, the silhouette or visible surface area is small anyway-- especially with helicopters. That being said, I've missed close traffic moving my direction before.

Don't they have strobes?

Still doesn't help when there are thousands of sources of light around the area you are flying. I just got back with a student from a night cross country and he was surprised how difficult it was to see an Airbus that was only a few miles in front of us.

The media only cares about ratings. They'll make even the smallest event into huge "BREAKING NEWS" stories. This is why i rarely watch TV...especially the news. The news like to play up people's fears. Remember the big deal they made with Swine Flu? How many people die daily from regular flu? As a result of the Media Hype, thousands of places raised their security level...causing extra wasted man-power, energy, etc....complete waste. As for car safely, i believe dozens if not hundreds of people are hit by cars just crossing the street everyday. The news never mention this either.Again, it's about playing off of people's fears and lack of knowledge. I'm sure most people think that planes just "fall out of the sky" if the engine fails. Probably 90% of the population have no clue on how an airplane or helicopter even flies. Common "tasks" don't scare people...and thus not "news worthy." ps. I found this site while doing some research so i don't come off completely retarded in my post...lol. Read the part about airline crashes:http://www.unitedjustice.com/death-statistics.html-feng

But this was during the day. High intensity strobes are very hard to miss even during the day -- that's why they're used, yes? So my question stands -- do helos have strobes? And if not, why not?xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxSimilar questions arise regarding the collision of a PSA 727 and a C-172 -- how could this crash have happened?

Even with strobes other aircraft are hard to see-especially when below you. But once again-a low wing airplane climbing out will have a blind spot where the wing is-there is just no way while pitched up you are going to see much below you in that area. I usually periodically lower the nose for a look-but there still is a vulnerable area there.Which is why for the price a tool like the zaon traffic detectors is one of the best things to come around. I have a video on my videos page here of being cutoff by a Cessna in the pattern-the Cessna didn't announce but the zaon picked him up. You can see in the video how hard he is to see.

See my post #12 above about low wing versus high wing. Regarding the video, when I tried to play it all I saw was your thought balloons. The video imagery did not play for me.

That is strange-it comes from Youtube-perhaps a temp server problem. <edit>-just tried it on my end and it worked fine.

I tried it again, still no joy. It must be my browser, which is Firefox 3.5.2For the benefit of the readership, here's a link to a description of the zaon device, which is clearly a good idea if it works much of the time. (It doesn't have to be perfect, right?) ...http://www.mypilotstore.com/mypilotstore/sep/4612Presumably it's some kind of doppler radar detector device, yes? And even at full list price it's cheap, cheap, cheap. If it works, any GA pilot who flies without one needs to see a psychiatrist. It would have completely headed off the incident I described above, which easily could have turned into a fatal midair.

If you click directly on the link and run it from youtube does it work?No -it polls interegations of transponders. This can come from atc or other aircraft. Since pretty much the whole country is radar covered and interegations are going on all the time the only real downside is non transponder equipped aircraft. It doesn't promise to get every target-but in my experience it gets most-and it is the ones you don't see you want some extra help on.The cheaper model will give distance and altitude but no bearing (that was what I was using in the video). The more expensive which I just traded up to not only gives bearing but will feed the info into a standard anti collision format on other devices such as the Garmin 496, new Bendix King efb, flightprep, anywhere map etc.I have been amazed at its accuracy-it almost always calls the traffic before atc does, and sometimes when atc does not.In a busy phase of flight such as the landing in my video or takeoff where you are checking gear, airspeed, flaps, and a lot of other things it is most helpful to have something speak in a pleasant female voice-traffic! and then show you where to look. Here is their website and info on the units:http://www.zaon.aero/

For some reason I'm having trouble posting a reply. Let me try it again ...My friend Google was unable to come up with a link to your video as it exists on YouTube.Re the Zaon, it sounds like exactly what's needed. Has it been TSO'ed?

Not sure what the problem is with the video-haven't had any other reports and works fine here.I'd have to look at the manual which is in the hangar but i think it is not tso'ed but would require a field approval if panel mounted. However it really isn't designed for that but to sit on the glareshield. The mrx works on batteries and needs no connections. The xrx actually has to be on the glareshield to work properly.
