US to Hawii flight possible?

Featured Replies

Just wondering if you can do a flight in the 737-900NG from the US to Hawii. Looking at the closest airport to Hawii with enough runway clearance (in California) that I can take off at, after setting up the FMC and having full tanks the FMC tells me I havn't enough fuel to reach there. Living here in Alaska I know that Alaska Airlines has a 737 that does a flight there (I know they must stop off somewhere before continuing on). I've tried different things with the load of the aircraft but nothing gives me the ability to reach there without running out of fuel. Am I doing something wrong?Chris

I believe so. I think the 737 has like a 6 to 7 hour flight range. I am almost positive. I don't even think you need full tanksTaylor Oldham

I know Aloha used to fly to OAK and ONT from HNL with the 73NG. I believe ATA used their 738 on flights from California for a while as well. These flights may have been on a rescricted payload though. Alaska's flights are non stop I believeDave S

My wife and I are flying from kpdx to phog the end of Oct. non stop. It's a 738. Of course the return trip we have to go from phog to ksea then down to kpdx. The distance is about the same as from the west coast to the east coast. I just looked at flightaware and the return flight is 2569 miles. And going to ksea I would think would be longer.

Oh man I wish I could go to Maui with you!!! I miss that place. PHOG has an answer approach if you come the east. You fly over the airport turn around between the mountains and come back in. Awesome. Taylor Oldham

You need to get rid of some weight. And I don't think you mean a -900ER as PMDG never modeled that. The best to make it would be a -800 or -700. Try half full with cargo and pax, and load the fuel, and off you go.

yeah, I'll try a lighter payload. I was almost positive you could get a 737 to Hawii from the rest of the US but then again with full tanks my FMC was showing that by the time I got there I would be out of fuel. I'm wondering if the FMC is just telling me know that I wouldn't make it with the reserve fuel that I input into the Performance Page. Thinking about it that makes sense, especially since I've been using some high numbers. Thanks guysChris

You really shouldn't use a reserve number higher than 2-5, when you are flying over water you really have no choice, reaching halfway means keep going. Not many alternative landing sites!

Try setting the cost index to 0, I know on the 737-800 you achieve a max range cruise by having the cost index set to zero. But the only problem is it will cause you to go slower.Kevin W.

Thanks

There is no question that a 737 has the range to go to Hawaii. Seems to me that the reserve fuel was just set to high, which the FMC sets aside. The FMC will calculate the fuel needed to get to your DEST, and if some of your reserve fuel is required, it will display the Insufficent Fuel warning. Now, for those fans of LOST, I am quite sure that the 737 would crash somewhere in the ocean if you flew it from LAX to Guam. That still bugs me the second I saw that episode.Scott Kalin

I've done KSEA and PANC direct to PHLI, PHOG and PHNL in the 737-800 several times. The 737 can do it, but it's always a stretch. Going overwater like that, you plan for a constant Mach. We used .79, everytime I believe, so cost index isn't really an issue. The winds aloft dictate how much fuel you'll need and consequently how many PAX you'll take (or bump!). The flying itself is kind of a pain in the butt, but it was usually worth it when you got there.Have fun!

Alaska has regular 738 service between PHOG, PANC and KSEA. Someone else used to fly them to Sacramento KSMF too, which is one I've flown in the sim.My US SIDSTAR Collection includes PHNL & PHOG as well as PANC, where I provide routing for departures and connect the arrivals to approaches for flying without ATC. Hope you give it try next time (see flightsim.com file pmdg0910.zip)
