September 26, 200916 yr Wow, this thing overclocks really well! Idle temps were higher than I expected (coming from an e8400), but this thing overclocked like a champ!! I can't wait to load up FSX and give it a whirl...Enjoy! Jeff Hepburn
September 26, 200916 yr Author Nice! Let us know how FSX runs...What is the rest of the specs?I kept most of my old parts.New:Proc: i7 920Mobo: EVGA X58 SLIRAM: 6GB 8-8-8-24 12800 (can't remember exactly what I bought at the moment)Reused:Antec 900 Case8800gt (next on the list to be replaced - speed depends on how it runs FSX on the new proc)Zalman 9500 coolera bunch of hard disks (~1.2 terrabytes)Corsair 550W PSUInstall begins tonight and finishes tomorrow... September 26, 200916 yr Cool...hopefully everything goes okay with the install.Good that you decide to upgrade the GPU sooner or later...it seems like it might hold back that bad boy.Regards,

I'm hoping FSX is as processor bound as everyone says. We'll see when I get everything reinstalled! Jeff Hepburn

September 26, 200916 yr very nice! what CPU fan you got? What'd you do to OC it? Just CPU? or RAM as well?
September 26, 200916 yr very nice! what CPU fan you got? What'd you do to OC it? Just CPU? or RAM as well?A Zalman 9500. Take another look at his specs. :( ___________________________________________________________________________________ Zachary Waddell -- Caravan Driver -- Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/zwaddell Avsim ToS Avsim Screenshot Rules
September 26, 200916 yr Author very nice! what CPU fan you got? What'd you do to OC it? Just CPU? or RAM as well?As Zach mentioned, I'm using a Zalman 9500 that I used in a previous build, but I had to buy the 1366 clip to make it work. So far so good....I overclocked the chip and got the ram as close to specs as I could (so 1600 @ 8-8-8-24). It took a while to figure out all of the new terms and voltage settings, but I found a few articles that actually explained things vs. "just set it this way".My FSX install is wrapping up...I should have some basic stats here shortly. September 27, 200916 yr Please let us know how it runs FSX, especially when compared to the 8400.Thanks,RH
September 28, 200916 yr Author Please let us know how it runs FSX, especially when compared to the 8400.Thanks,RHOk, I've got all of my wx, terrain, ground add-ons loaded as well as the MD-11 and JS41. Here's the basic setup (from memory):- Setup per Nick's guide- Resolution - 1680x1050- Scenery sliders to the right- Autogen and Scenery Complexity - Dense- No ground shadows or aircraft shadows,- No AI (air) traffic, Cars on 10%- 8xS AA and 16x AF- FTX, GEX, REX, ASA- Framerates - Unlimited (I usually use FPS limiter tool outside of FS but did not for testing purposes)MD-11 takeoff northbound from Seattle with Building Storms gives me mid-20s occasionally dipping into high teens. e8400 gave me Low 20s often dipping into mid teens. Overall smoothness is much better, but I honestly thought raw frames would be a bit better.I tried setting AF/AA to off and really there wasn't much improvement over frames...maybe +5 total. I'm not sure how much stuff gets pumped through my older graphics board, but I really wonder if that's what is limiting me. Any one have any thoughts?Overall much better, but I'm still not totally satisfied :) Jeff Hepburn

September 29, 200916 yr Thanks for the information. I currently run a system around an 8400 @ 4.0 Ghz and had throught about upgrading. I was hoping that you would show greater improvment than you did. I see that you are conservative with your sliders. Maybe you can move your sliders more to the right without the framerate loss you would expect with just an 8400. I wonder how much improvement you would get with a GTX 280. RH
