FSX vs FS9

Featured Replies

Can anyone point me to an FAQ that lists all the improvements that FSX offeres when compared to FS9? Looks like PCs are finally getting close to running it decently. What does it offer over FS9... What sort of improvements? Is the Flight Model coding improved? My understanding is that most of the improvements come from it's futureproof expandability with things like additional graphical advancements, etc... Yes?Can anyone help me understand?

The article on FSX in Wikipedia is as good a place to start as any.Jeff ShylukSenior Staff ReviewerAVSIM

Lots of differences, what features are important to you?

I'm not sure what is different with flight modeling, you'd have to ask someone in that departmentGraphically FSX is far more advanced than FS9. If you enjoy VFR FSX will be a welcomed addition to your simulation world. The ground textures alone are default 1.2m resolution (FS9 was 4.9m I think) But FSX can support 7cm texture resolution (examples below) Denser autogen is also an option...orbx.jpgfsscr005-18.jpgI also feel the sky/clouds looks better in FSX default, compared to FS9. With FSX you can buy addons like FEX, which add high res clouds, higher res than FS9 can supportfsscr009-7.jpgAnother plus is ground vehicles/AI boats etc - Cars/Trucks on roads, sailboats, small power boats, and some cruise ships sail the waters. Also airports have ground equipment that move around, so they really enhance the airport environment. All moderate sized airports have these features in FSX.Aircraft have bump mapping, and VC's are more advanced in FSX. Landing lights with certain payware aircraft are much better than default FSX and FS9fsscr008-16.jpgL39ll.jpgI'm sure there are more benefits, but YOU NEED A FAST PC to run these things in all their glory. Something like and i7 clocked to 4.0GHz + with a GTX 285

Wow Ryan, that first screen shot is amazing! I've never seen a scenery texture that detailed! What scenery is that?

I have found the flight dynamics for smaller GA aircraft to be better in FSX, when I fly GA in fs9 I don't feel there is as much rudder authority as when I fly in FSX or real life. For larger Jets/commerical aircraft it's a wash. Also, to be fair to FS9, one advantage for FS9 is that you can pretty much guarantee a smooth experience assuming you have even a half-way decent PC, you can load FS9, a bunch of addons(some of which look as good as anything for FSX ex. Fly Tampa KSEA/Flightzone Portland) and a complex aircraft, full traffic, real world weather and get a 30fps experience.

Thanks, these are images which I felt illustrated FSX's strengths hehe. The 1st and last I cannot take credit for. The first one is an airport from Orbx, I think Tamworth, in Australia. http://www.fullterrain.com/product_ystw.htmlThe 2nd one is Carenado's P28R Arrow, 3rd is the default cessna over the duluth harbor near dusk, 4th is RealAir's incredible Duke, and the last is the Lotus Sim L-39 Albatross, the author created a milestone with those realistic landing lights. I am doing well Paul, good to see you in the FSX forum lol! Now is the time to upgrade to "X" - the hardware is finally out where we can enjoy FSX with very high sliders...Almost done with training in Duluth, checked out through the tower position.... but now we're getting back into Winter again :(
