October 26, 200916 yr Bill I had a similar problem when I first installed GEP, blurry textures, poor fps and lots of stuttering in my case. This little tweak fixed everything, give it a shot:Backup your current working FS9.CFG first!!!(found at C:\Documents and Settings\Your User Name\Application Data\Microsoft\FS9)Once you've backed your current FS9.CFG file up, locate the following lines of code and replace them with the lines below.TERRAIN_ERROR_FACTOR=100.000000TERRAIN_MIN_DEM_AREA=10.000000TERRAIN_MAX_DEM_AREA=100.000000TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21TERRAIN_TEXTURE_SIZE_EXP=8TERRAIN_AUTOGEN_DENSITY=5TERRAIN_USE_GRADIENT_MAP=1TERRAIN_EXTENDED_TEXTURES=1TERRAIN_DEFAULT_RADIUS=8.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_RADIUS=8.500000TERRAIN_EXTENDED_LEVELS=1242456That's it, save the FS9.CFG file and fire up your version of FS9 and hopefully you will be able to see a huge difference in the quality of your ground textures. Here are the direct links to where I ran across this if you'd like to explore more tips and tricks:Thread with this tweak:http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 1162937650Thread with many great tips and tricks for getting the most out of your setup;http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 1166959332 Military AI traffic and scenery packages for the Flight Simulator community.
October 26, 200916 yr Thanks Jim and Mike.Mike, I will try your advice. Your links are broken though. Would love to read them so please fix when you can.
October 27, 200916 yr I searched my entire c:\ and no fs9.cfg file exists. I have a file called fs2000.cfg, but the only thing in it is:[APL]CACHE_WAV_FILES=1
October 27, 200916 yr Try following this path...C/ Documents &Settings/ Your Name/ Application data/ Microsoft/ FS9 You should find it there.Russell.
October 27, 200916 yr Try following this path...C/ Documents &Settings/ Your Name/ Application data/ Microsoft/ FS9You should find it there.Russell.Nope, nothing there. I don't have the /application data/microsoft/fs9 subdirectories. Like I said, I searched the entire c:\ for fs9.cfg and it found nothing.
October 27, 200916 yr Nope, nothing there. I don't have the /application data/microsoft/fs9 subdirectories. Like I said, I searched the entire c:\ for fs9.cfg and it found nothing. Those folders are by default hidden by Windows.Double-click My Computer to open Windows Explorer, then select Tools, Folder Options from the menu.In the Folder Options window, select the View tab, then under the Hidden files and folders option select Show hidden files and folders. Now click OK and you should see those hidden folder. :)
October 27, 200916 yr Ahhh...hidden folders. Thanks! So I added the fs9.cfg suggestions as above and here's what it gave me. Sorry the angle and view isn't identical; there was less wind this time so I could hold centerline better...Before fs9.cfg tweak:After fs9.cfg tweak:I think it's better. Although the airport is not visible anymore. However my flight path is clearly pretty different so that explains that. I need to play with it for a bit longer to see if I like it. It was slightly choppy during taxi and take-off. I do really like the view out the cockpit though, which is what I only look at when flying...
October 28, 200916 yr Yep, looks like you're on your way. I suggest you get Soft Horizons (search for it) and limit visibility to around 60 miles, really makes FS look better. - Red E8500 @ 4.1 | EVGA 275GTX (overclocked) | 2x2GB Mushkin Enhanced Redline @ 1066 | Samsung 24inch LCD @ 1920x1080 |
October 28, 200916 yr You should limit your vis to no more than 40 miles (30 miles is even better). Anything more than that, and you are wasting your CPU's resources. You can't distinguish details much beyond 30 miles anyway, so what's the point of making your computer render that stuff so far away? Here is the link again (sorry they redid their forums recently):http://205.252.250.26/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1166959332There's enough reading in there to keep you busy for a week. November 1, 200916 yr Yep, looks like you're on your way. I suggest you get Soft Horizons (search for it) and limit visibility to around 60 miles, really makes FS look better. Here's the Soft Horizon link: http://library.avsim.net/esearch.php?CatID...amp;DLID=111879
November 2, 200916 yr Thanks, but I think I'll pass on the soft horizon thing. It did get me to think though. Most horizons I see do have a distinct line. I think at low altitudes and clear skies this is normally the case. Increasing altitude causes the atmosphere (clouds, moisture, haze, particles) to blurr the horizon. Just did some google image searching and confirmed. Since I'm usually flying low VFR I'm fine with my horizon.
