It got no 2D panel and I got no Track IR Pro

Featured Replies

Two planes has caught my interest when searching for planes for my newly purchased Raw Gritt PNG scenery. Both have one thing in common. No 2D panel supplied. How bad is that given I have no Track IR pro? The planes are1) Twin Otter XIn the product description is stated you won't miss the 2D panel. Certainly true if you got a track ir pro but if you don't?2) Beaver XThe avsim review suggest you might be disappointed if you have no track ir pro.Han anyone tried out these planes without track ir pro? If so is the absence of a 2D panel an inconvenience? How is performence?

I have the Aerosoft Twotter. I used it for a year without TIR (which I just got this xmas). It works fine as long as you have a HAT switch on your joystick - or another way to pan the cockpit. In all honesty.... TIR is nice to have, but I'm not sorry I lived without it for the past 10 years of flight simming etcI dont have any experience with their Beeaver

I refuse to and can't fly without my TrackIR... I suppose it's a matter of taste. ;)

TrackIR does have a definite learning curve period during which you will feel (at times) almost nauseated by the head motion. After about an hour of use, you will wonder how you ever got along without it IMHO. I've used it for several years now.2-D cockpits are becoming things of the past. Expect to see more and more high end sims that no longer feature a 2-D panel.

Lots of people fly those planes without TrackIR. Me included. A hat switch on a yoke or joystick work well. Maybe not as well as Track IR, but well none the less. Don't let not having TrackIR limit your enjoyment.

I bought both of those planes and flew them many times before getting TrackIR. It is absolutely possible to enjoy both without head tracking. Both perform well on my (average) computer. Of the two, the Beaver is my favorite.

Any particular reason why you prefer the BeaverX over the Twin Otter X?

Hello, I just recently made the jump to FSX from FS9. Up to now I've been a diehard 2D cockpit user, and didn't even want to hear about VCs. However, after making the jump to FSX using Nick's performance tweaks I am now flying more and more in VCs. I do not have Track IR, I just use a hat switch and it works fine. My first FSX payware was the A2A Boeing 377 w/Accusim expansion and the VC is so good I don't miss the 2D at all. I think the Twotter will be similar. The only thing that gets a little cumbersome is zooming in and out which has to be done with the keyboard (or a button mapped to it).

Perhaps- but a couple of recent quotes from Jim Rhoads are interesting. (Jim is the principal at Flight One.)April 25/09- "As long as I am leading our products they will have both 2D and VC." Nov 27/09- "I love 2D panels. I despise VC's." (Jim is a real world pilot.)Alex Reid
