Hey guys !So i just got my computer set up. Here is what i am running so far:Asus rampage 2 extreme motherboardIntel i7 920 overclocked to 4.0 ghz6gb ocz ddr3 ram overclocked to 1600 mhz.Caviar black 1.5 TB hard driveNvidia 8800gt slicoolermaster 922 tower. Now, my question, is a suggestion on a graphics card. I kinda want something faster! i am running flight simulator x with settings set to very high, light bloom on, and dx 10 off. With the 8800gt i get around 24-30 fps on the pmdg 747-400x, **depending on where i am. sometimes i get like 15 if i am in like downtown new york**. but what i really want to do, is go anywhere and not worry about the frames. (plus, the 8800gt kinda needs some tweaking to get it to do what you want it to do.So, What card do you guys think i should get? And what specifically does a card have to have the most of to make FSX run with high frames? finally Should i go with ATI or Nvidia for fsx? Thanks again for all the help!!Denis Ndregjoni

It is the CPU rather than the graphics card that will determine mostly the best fps. No offence though but if I could not get better frame rates than that with your equipment I would ditch FSX and go back to FS9 with REX and GE Pro 11 and get triple the frame rates or more and with great skies and scenery into the bargain. Ignore the framerates in FSX, it has a different meaning than in FS9. The key criterion are no stutters and fluid animation, the fps number doens't measure this.

Dan, that's kind of an interesting comment. I usually don't watch FPS and just look for relative smoothness, but can you explain how FPS in FSX doesn't reflect smoothness? I would assume that 10 FPS would look like a slide show and 40 wouldn't.

Maybe, but I get very fluid animation at 12fps and I would not expect that since we are conditioned to think of 30fps as the goal, to borrow from television. The number that is displayed is a very dampened figure, I've got it set up to display peak average and low values and it is still hard to understand what Aces put into this number. Stutters usually happen independent the frame rate, are are a result of the GPU waiting on the CPU (this was discussed at lenght back before Aces closed down). When I am flying the -8i into KORD with the FSDT scenery I start getting stutters, but I think that has more to do with a combination of complexity and shoreline/water. I haven't played with that specific case yet, otherwise my FSX is always smooth and with fps values as low as 12. I don't understand it, I just enjoy it.

Thanks. I've been playing with the graphics setting a lot lately, as I've added UTX and GEX recently. I don't get any stutters at all, although landing the 747-4 in JFK yesterday (FSDT), it got a bit jittery. I had also increased my target FPS up from 30 to 50, which I'll probably take back down.

You have a very good setup...all you need to worry about is whether it is fluid or not. I can have 25-30 frames and it will be stuttering. Plus a graphics card won't make any difference because fsx is extremely cpu intensive.

Hello DougSome of us, myself included, find that setting the target FPS to "Unlimited" gives better performance that trying to limit it to a certain level. For me, I get around 10 FPS more when set to unlimited. Your mileage may vary. Its worth a try.I agree with the above posters, FSX FPS has a different meaning then FS9. If the sim is running soothly, what does it matter what FPS is showing.Rick Verhallen
