Boeing 787 Wing Test Video

Featured Replies

I presume you've seen the 777 wing test video as well? I was kinda hoping they would break the wing. I know little to nothing about the way carbon fiber takes stress, and it would be cool to watch.

I wonder if they test it also downward too
Do have any idea of how a wing works?

I imagine he does. But the wing may be put under these kind of stresses in unusual circumstances, a legitimate question tbh.

You would need significantly more negative G's than any commercial airliner is rated for to bend the wing to appreciable negative camber. Also, as any mechanical engineer out there can vouch for (I'm an EE) they learn alot from the wing by just bending it. They measure lots of data such as compression/expansion stress and deflection at hundreds of locations. From that data they charaterize the design and compare it to models of the wing using finite element analysis for example. It's hard to imagine the amount of work that goes into a test like this.
