May 22, 201016 yr Is there a way to ask RC4.3 for the altimeter setting? I've noticed that many times when I get handed off the new controller does not give me the altimeter check until some time later. I'm assuming RC4 figures that if the new controller's altimeter is the same as the old why give it. However, there are situations where I need to ask for the altimeter to verify my setting. Last night I loaded a saved rcd flight (I'm on a 8-9 hour flight with a DC-4). Unfortunately, when I loaded the flight the altimeter the controller was using was much different than what the flight had saved. I didn't know that so I adjusted the altitude to get to my assigned and got yelled at. Eventually the controller gave me the altimeter setting and I realized I was 400 feet too high.Or can I assume that if I set the altimeter with the B key that it will be the same value the controller has? Thanks. I'm using RC4 with IYP and loving it! ATC like it was in real life!
May 22, 201016 yr Use the "check for Weather" option. That will give it to you. If Michelle doesn't understand, I just sat "select 3" or whichever one it is.Neal Howard Neal Howard
May 22, 201016 yr In FS the "B" key is hard coded for a transition altitude of 18,000 feet or FL180. That is only good mostly for FAA land, not most of the world. Read the sections in the manual searching for "transition level" or "transition altitude".The B key will set your altimeter to local surface pressure anywhere you are below 18,000 feet and standard pressure above 18,000 feet but that should not be used above the transition altitude where you should have the altimeter set to 29.92 in. or 1013 mb. The RC copilot announces when you pass the TA climbing or descending to adjust your altimeter accordingly. Another thing is in some weather situation the surface pressure at your aircraft location could be slightly different from the airport. Always follow the RC controller. The RC controller page shows the transition level for your airports so you can know those in advance.

ATC like it was in real life!if you are at a flight level, the altimeter is needed. when a controller gives you an altitude below the transition level, he always gives you the altimeter. anytime the altimeter changes more than .02 inches, a new altimeter is given.if you are flying along at 12000, then the altimeter will be given everytime it changes, and you need to make the change. as ron says, be careful about the B key. in the USA, you can always hit it, to set the pressure. outisde the USA, and below the transition level, you can press it. but don't press it at FL120 - that will be cause for some badgering...jd JD Read my blog
May 23, 201016 yr Am I missing something here? By leafing through the various pages of options available when in flight, you can find an option that allows you, the pilot, to ask for an altimeter check. Isn't that what you want to do? Isn't that what you want to do?No, that is available only at certain phases of the flight but not enroute. From my readings of the manual I thought so to but closer reading showed it wasn't and when I went throught the menus while actually in flight during cruise phase with center it's not there.if you are at a flight level, the altimeter is needed. when a controller gives you an altitude below the transition level, he always gives you the altimeter. anytime the altimeter changes more than .02 inches, a new altimeter is given.if you are flying along at 12000, then the altimeter will be given everytime it changes, and you need to make the change. as ron says, be careful about the B key. in the USA, you can always hit it, to set the pressure. outisde the USA, and below the transition level, you can press it. but don't press it at FL120 - that will be cause for some badgering...jdI don't like the B key either as it's specific to the US. I've been setting it manually or having Michelle in IYP do it now. My concern is that when I get a new controller I'm used to being given the altimeter and I can't ask for it. I've had some instances as I explained that it would have been nice to be able to check it.Someone suggested the Weather check option but what weather is used for that - a station close to my location or actual weather at my altitude and postiton? Would the altimeter be the same as the controller sees?A request for the next version - add the option to ask the controller for the altimeter at any time. Thanks - Love RC4!
