I think the story goes that, when the papacy was moved for a short while in France at Avignon in the middle ages, the king of France at that time (Phillip the 4th?) closed the cardinals in the church and told them not to come out until they produce a new pope. The signal was to be white smoke from the chimneyI might be wrong, but that's what i remember.

Your theory has merit, so I decided to test it, but go one better. I have offered a Virgin airliner as a sacrifice. That is what Conclave means. Locked in with a key.The tradition of Conclave being held in the Sistine Chapel wasnt established until the 1800s I believe, due to the Lateran Palace being in a state of disrepair, which is also the main reason why the Holy Father now lives at the Apostolic Palace on Vatican Hill instead of his old stomping grounds adjacent to St. Johns.
