July 27, 201015 yr I have a q6600 2.4 ghz cpu. I can overclock it to 2.675ghz in the nvidia ntune program. Anything after that the computer locks up. Is there a program that can manage the overclocking beyond 2.675 ghz. Thanks.Michael Davis
July 27, 201015 yr Proper overclocking is done in the BIOS.I had a Q6600 running at 3.2 ghz at one time. I can't remember what settings I used though, I have an i7 920 running at 4.1 now.I got most of my advice from www.overclockers.comJeff Calder Jeff Calder
July 27, 201015 yr Just a couple of suggestions1. Never EVER use any programs to do your overclocking. Always use hardware methods (tweaking in the BIOS)2. Never EVER use any featured called "Automatic", "Intelligent" or "AI" overclocking. Same applies for voltages. Infact, its even more important when it comes to voltages, as auto voltage is a sure way to fry your motherboard / components over time. Motherboard manufactorers increase auto voltage way above whats recommended to ensure a stable overclock. 3. Read up on the subject before you even attempt to adjust anything. You wouldnt trim the engine of your car without knowing anything about how to do it, would you? You'd be able to find a million guides on google that explains the concepts and procedure way better than someone would be able to in a forum post here on avsim. Google is a very powerful tool, use it!
July 27, 201015 yr OK, I'll try with my terrible English, it will be very brief:As all mainboards are different and have other BIOS settings available it's impossible to make easy "how to", but there are few principles:You OC mainly by BIOS, except for modern mainboards that allow user to make all settings from system level. You have to make sure that your memory bus is not linked to CPU bus, otherwise You will fast reach memory limit witch will prevent You from further OC and result in system crashes. EDIT2: If Your BIOS don't allow You to unlink memory from CPU, You can thenlower Your memory clock from e.g. 800MHz to 633, it will give You the space required for CPU OCing. You have to make sure that Your CPU has proper cooling e.g. stock cooler is unable to cool OCed CPU enough, put some big tower cooler with 12cm fan. When increasing FSB, at some point You will need to increase VCORE and maybe even chipset voltage. Increasing voltages is highly dangerous and done improperly may lead to damages to Your hardware. When You increase any settings do it in little steps, check Your PC for stability and then make further increasements.EDIT1:And stick to the rules stated by Wims! You can also look in the internet for guides created exactly for Your mainboard.
July 27, 201015 yr Sorry for going OT hereHey Grzegorz, I can see you eventually went with a 860 setup. How happy are you with it?
July 27, 201015 yr Hi Dario, thank Yo for Your concern ;)Compared to [email protected] it's change from 12-20fps to 25-40fps with 860 at it's stock clocks and the same config, so the improvement is huge! I can't OC it so far because I'm still running it at stock cooler witch is... tiny... Next week I hope I will put together liquid cooling so we will see what it's capable of :)I have about 20 fps over Frankfurt, with settings about medium high slightly customized. I'm very happy so far, finally I can fly my J41 without slide show ;)
July 27, 201015 yr Great to hear man :( You have plenty headroom for OCing there, so I wouldn't be surprised if those 20 FPS end up being +25 which is really nice Hi Dario, thank Yo for Your concern ;)Compared to [email protected] it's change from 12-20fps to 25-40fps with 860 at it's stock clocks and the same config, so the improvement is huge! July 27, 201015 yr Opposite to the answers before I can recommend EasyTune6.I have also a Q6600 rockstable at 3.4 Ghz with this program.Without this programm I have never got it stable.... but I'm no OC professional :( But I highly recommend also a program where you can monitor your CPU temps... July 27, 201015 yr And of course remember, that by over clocking You are voiding warranty, and You can damage Your hardware. Whatever You do, You do it at Your own risk! :)
July 27, 201015 yr The basic idea is about increasing the clock and adding some voltage to make it stable, but I will also say that if you are asking questions about OCing , then you shouldnt be doing it yet. read up on it, read up on it some more, then read up on it again. I studied mutliple different sources on how they all went about OCing their I7s until I felt I had a firm understanding of what I was doing and what was actually going on when I made the changes in the BIOS. And if you buy an unlocked i7, it is even easier.
