Fastest You've Ever Gone in a Commercial Airliner?

Featured Replies

As I type this, I'm simulating British Airways Flight 218 from Denver - London-Heathrow. My aircraft is a Boeing 777-236ER.As I was flying over Kuujjuarapik, Quebec (say that 5 times fast :( ) with my autothrottle set to maintain the 777's cruise speed of Mach 0.84, I decided to check the GPS and my groundspeed due to the 108 kt tailwind I was getting.I open up the GPS and...HOLY SMOKES!!! I'm flying 599 kts / 689 mph / 1109 kph! It is the second fastest speed I have ever achieved with a subsonic airliner in FSX, the first being 602 kts. / 693 mph / 1115 kph.I have a screenshot here to prove it! This one says 598 kts because I'm in the middle of a right turn, resulting in the fact that I don't have a direct tailwind anymore, thus slightly reducing my groundspeed. So to all you commercial airliner aficionados out there, I ask...What is the fastest groundspeed you have achieved with a subsonic passenger transport?I look forward to hearing your responses!

I can't remember exactly, but I remember getting around 610 - 620 kts ground speed in an MD-11 somewhere near Boston heading east, with ASV6.5 giving me a nice tailwind of around 170kts, must of hit the jetstream. Glad I wasn't coming from the other way with drained tanks!Cheers, SLuggy

I do not have a signature. Why are you reading this?

At first I thought real world...this is my first known record from Newark to Heathrow this past JulyPicture096.jpgThat attained speed was just nearing Ireland:Picture097.jpgAnd the view from First Class of NYC:Picture093.jpg

I do remember that I hit about 720 ground speed in the FSX Sky Simulations DC-9 over the Bay of Biscay once whilst doing an Air Hauler flight from Manchester to Almeria, as I skirted a nasty storm. Not too surprising, since the area is historically known for having strong storm winds. The phrase 'I don't like the cut of his jib' comes from that phenomenon, because English sea captains could identify French and Spanish ships at long range owing to the fact they would trim their jibs short because of the prevalence for strong winds in that area. One for trivia fans there. :( Al

Does FS9 count as well?Last year July 9th, flying with real-world weather (ASA) including winds aloft data, in a L-1011 TriStar (British Airways) from the U.S. to EGLL (don't remember the origin). Between Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland, Canada. FL290. Cruisng at Mach 0.84 and -28

Real life and FS9 do of course count. :( After reading some of these responses, 599 kts feels like peanuts all of a sudden, compared to what has been done in real life and in other people's simulators.JMR, that is a fascinating link! To see hard evidence that real airliners can catch such a tailwind and fly so fast truly astounds me.I wish my Shift+Z info would display winds faster than 99 kts, I always have to go into the FSX Weather menu to check the true speed. But thanks again for the responses, I look forward to seeing more!Cheers!

How about Mach 1.2 in the Concorde from IAD to LHR!Bruce
