September 22, 200322 yr Hello to all of my fellow flight simers.I just wanted to give a heads up on a new Release For Terain Mesh.It is called Real Terrain. I just uploaded the first of two packs for Colorado. Real Terrain Colorado is Denver and everything west of denver. It is FREEWARE. Also it is a 30M Mesh.. If you like seeing REAL mountains and REAL Valleys, I would download this pack! Here are some screen shots. If you download the first Pack, this is what you will see....Flying past a valley in Regular FS Terrain.....http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/38492.jpgAnd this is with Real Terrain Colorado.....http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/38493.jpgIf you wish to see more, the best thing to do is just to download it and install it and experiance it for yourself. I just uploaded it today so if all goes well it should be listed tomarrow. Real Terrain
September 22, 200322 yr David,Thx so much for the great scenery. I live near Telluride so this is perfect for my flights. Don't have fs2004 yet, do you know if this will work in fs2002? Look forward to seeing your work!Roy Holley
September 22, 200322 yr Hi David,I too look forward to trying this new terrain mesh. I fly out of Jeffco in the Denver area, and although my small C172 doesn't particularly like mountain flying :), I'm an avid hiker in the Rockies and will appreciate this new development of your's.Thanks,Bruce. ASEL, Instrument. KBJC, Colorado.
September 22, 200322 yr Roy, the ansewr to your question In short is... YES!I am also uploading an installer for FS2002.Here is a before and after shot for you, this is in FS2002, the other two where in FS2004.A so called cliff in Fs2002... Looks like a hill to me....http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/38567.jpgAnd this is the Effect of Real Terrain!http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/38568.jpgLike I said the first pack will be up tomarrow. I will try to get Pack 2 for both of the Sims uploaded this evening. If you have questions or comments you can reach me here at the forum or by email. [email protected]
September 22, 200322 yr I just noticed that I shiped the Fs2002 Readme.txt with Fs2004 and 2004 readme with 2002... the Readme applys to both versions. Sorry bout that!
September 23, 200322 yr Can you mix it with Orlando's releases? I just installed all of his from from FS2K2 and FS2K into FSCOF....including some from Colorado.
September 23, 200322 yr Roy, you live near Telluride?!? i was just there last week! did you happen to get out to the blues-n-brews festival???what a blast! and the most beautiful area of the US! i'm out there at LEAST every other year!chris
September 23, 200322 yr Jetnija...It is safe for you to install multiple mesh of different resolutions. FS will just look for the most detailed and use it.For example, the grand caynon on my machine has 9.6, 19.2 and 38.4 meter data. It uses the 9.6 for the caynon area, 19.2 for about 20 miles all around it, and then Arizona, Nevada, and Colorado use the base 38.4. FS will sort it all out for you.
September 23, 200322 yr Great mesh! I've flown into some airports in Colorado many times and it definetely makes it seem more real.Good work!
September 23, 200322 yr Just wondering if you used Matthew Styles free srtm_to_bgl_104.zip to create the data? His scripts allow high resolution FS terrain to be created in just 2 clicks of a mouse using downloadable Shuttle SRTM data.
September 23, 200322 yr David- this is brilliant scenery.Just spent the last hour flying round the mountain and enjoying the views.May I recommend something with a bit more "get up and go" than the C172.I found it quite exhilerating in a P51 Mustang, plenty of power and speed. It was a little difficult getting of at CO52- had to backtrack onto the grass at the runway end to get a little extra distance but made it successfully. Not a nice place with steeply rising groud both ends- but fun flyingThanks a millionDave
September 23, 200322 yr That does seem to be the case. The holes in the terrain at N37.75 W105.55 reveal why the SRTM data is identified as of preliminary test quality only. Matthew's interesting application is rather limited in its ability to deal with these issues. They also indicate that the mesh was constructed with the older version of the Microsoft SDK. The new version would not have created mesh for that LOD quadrant.Steve
September 23, 200322 yr Actualy it CAN be done. I had to learn how to do it, but it can. if you do it correctly you will just barley clear the tops of the trees.
