Goodbye MSFS

Yes, I've gotten rid of EVERYTHING in my FS9 at the moment. The only addon I'm using is ESSA, Stockholm, Arlanda airport and it SUCKS! I've got all, and I mean ALL my sliders in FS9 set to about 10%. My flightsimulator looks really really really bad but when I'm approaching a small not so busy airport I've got framerates like 47-52! But when I'm approaching ESSA, ooohh yeah! The framerates drop to 2-4, the computer freezes for about 5-7 seconds until the computer is all finished with building the airport building by building...Guys, I think I'm all done with Microsoft Flightsimulator. After seven years of flying MSFS I'm fed up. I don't have the strength to continue messing around with this framerates ####. About a week ago I bought PSS Airbus 330-200 and 330-300. And you know what? It was soooabsolutely brilliantly bad! My framerates dropped to 7-9 at London, Heathrow with all sliders as mentioned above. And my specs? Oh hahaha! Not so bad, look:Pentium P4 3.0 Ghz1024 RAMRadeOn 9800 128 MB 3.6/3.7 CatalystFSUIPC 3.08/Tomas

Have you renamed the default.xml file, which can be found in the FS2004/autogen folder into default.bak? There are "hundreds" of posts here in this forum, which confirm that the fps will dramatically increase and stutters are minimized by renaming this file (the reason for this you will find in numerous threads here in the forum). My sys specs are a bit lower than yours, but I easily get 20 fps (locked at 20!) at all default airports (incl. the detailed ones like KORD, EGLL etc.) with AI and fair weather and most of the sliders at maximum (except mesh at 85, cloud radius at 40 miles). AA at 4s (yes, even 4s not 4x!) AF at 2x, both via vid card, mipmapping at 4 default. So I assume by deleting or renaming the default.xml and by installing the latest drivers for your motherboard, videocard, soundcard, joystick etc. you could get a decent frame rate.IMHO, its a great sim! And if they even solve the default.xml, overcast and mountain fog problem, then it will become an absolutely fabulous sim!WolfgangP4 2.4 Ghz512 DDRGeForce 3 Ti200Win XP Pro

Hi Wolfgang!Just renaming it to default.bak? Nothing else?Tomas

Tomas,Yes, just rename it to default.bak, then the sim will recognize it as back up and will not use it. Renaming is better than deleting, in case MS finds a fix for the problem. What probably causes the drop in FPS is, that the sim loads the autogen objects, which are in this xml.file, but does not release them or at least not in a reasonable time. Since this the sim is overloaded with autogen objects, which will cause the fps drop and the stutter. You will not recognize a drop when only flying into one direction. But when turning and heading back from where you just came the problem becomes obvious. And off course it is much more recongnizabale at detailed sceneries like your add on ESSA or at EGLL.Though by renaming the default.xml you will miss out a few specific types of autogen objects like those reddish shopping malls, billboards, silos etc. If you cannot live without them there is another go around: when you see a drop in fps or when you are going to make a 180 degree turn, go to settings, set autogen to zero enter the sim again, go back to setiings immediately after, and set autogen back to extremly dense (or whatever your preferred value is). This is quite annoying, but will solve the problem for a short periode. The go around with a scenery-refreshing-hotkey, which appearently works for some folks, does not work for me.Wolfgang

Ok, thanks, Wolfgang! I'll try the ranaming version.Tomas

Sometimes its time for a change, but I'm sure you'll be back sometime down the road.Have you considered flying with FS2002? Many many people are still enjoying FS2002, and are enjoying excellent frames with all their add-ons. Good luck friend.... RJ :-wave

Yeah, MD83 and 3Green. I feel like grabbing the bottle at this point... Feels like I'm left out in the cold. I sure hope I can get the FS9 working as FS2002. Those were the days... Ah, well, I'll get back on this post before the weekend and see where I'm left at. Is anyone of you guys using the RadeOn 9800 Pro video card? Do you know if and when the new driver will be out and do you know if it will help improving the frame rates?Tomas

I'm using a Radeon 9800 Pro - we have similar specs, and I don't have those sorts of problems. The new Cat 3.8s are due out Oct 8th.Did you upgrade to the Radeon, or did it come with your new PC? Sounds like you may need to do a format.

Cheers,

My system has lower specs than yours Tom and FS2k4 runs great on my machine:Dell 2.6gig 800FSBRadeon9700pro1gig SDRAM It sounds like your AA isn't turned off under your video card settings (actually Radeon doesn't allow you to turn AA off per say but you can have it set to 2x, the card's lowest setting). You need to make sure AA turned off in FS2k4 as well. Max out all the other Radeon Video card settings. Download FSW's clouds update for FS2k4 (follow Chris's FS2k4 display setting instuctions, very important). I don't have a problem with Autogen and wouldn't recommend messing with that file unless the above I mentioned is done and your still having problems.Take care...

Your specs are certainly impressive. Which leads me to believe that the problem is probably not FS related.......What OS are you using? YOu should check the task manager to see what else is running. I am using XP and on startup, I only have 14 processes running, whereas I used to have over 28 before. I used msconfig to get rid of a lot of this stuff that I dont use that likes to run in the background.I have an Atlhon 2200XP with a Ti4600 and my sliders are way higher than yours though not maxed.....and my FPS are locked at 24 (where I've locked them).I think you should also try a reformat (even though I have XP Pro, I still use the FDISK program from my old Win98 startup up Floppy first), then re-install the OS, do all the updates from windows update, then install DX9, then install the latest chipset drivers, then install the drivers for your sound card and then drivers for your video card.....all in that order. Then install FS9, leave the sliders at default and check out your performance. There are a couple of tweaks that you should then implement....first being renaming the autogen file in the autogen folder. Then a few simple FS9.cfg edits. Then start installing your addons one by one......and check performance after each install to see which one degrades performance.Even if you don't reformat, at least try a full reinstall and go through the procedures listed above. If you need any help, private message me you email address and I'll be willing to help you.

Hi,I feel like letting everyone know that I gave this guy quite a rundown on just about everything under the sun he could do to improve his performance in the this thread...http://forums.avsim.net/dcboard.php?az=sho...topic_id=148068I also told him about renaming the default.xml file. I also have a link in the above thread to another thread I made on another forum that I feel is a short dossier on MSFS performance(on page 2 there). And, someone told him there may be a problem with the third party addon airports he is using and suggested to get rid of the landclass that came with it. Of course, I can't help too much with third party addon bugs. What's up Thomas, am I not good enough for ya!? :-lolI dare anyone to have a look at all the stuff I covered in the above thread. You gotta ask yourself just one question, do ya feel lucky? Go ahead, make my day. Hehe.JimHello Tower, I need clearance Clarence. Roger Victor what's your vector?

Jim Jim Jim! Hey, come on. I've sent you an email telling you what I've done. I'm not saying your tips and tricks isn't working out. I'm working on it, I'm working on it, man! Take it easy, I was just expressing my feelings and looking for someone else with the same problems. The more answers I get on ALL my posts the happier I get. Hajar du!? Ok? Easy easy, man.Tomas

Based on the info you've posted here, it seems your problems are linked to aftermarket add-ons and not the core program itself. As is the case many times, complex add-ons can cause SIGNIFICANT performance drops for many users. Simply try removing some of the add-ons and/or replacement files you've installed before removing the entire program. I can HONESTLY say that FS9 is performing remarkably well for me on a completely antiquated PIII-1GHz, 512MB RAM, and 32MB GF2 GTS card. Yes, I have limitations, but I work around those instead of trying to pound through them (3D clouds for example). Dave

Hehe Thomas... gotcha! I was pretty much kidding around. But I did feel like I needed to give you a little grief after it looked as if you didn't seem to follow my advice about the 'default.xml' file but followed it from Wolfgang in here. Anyway, no problem Thomas, I'm cool. I'm still hoping you can get this sorted out so you can enjoy the sim. Good Luck.Cheers,JimHello Tower, I need clearance Clarence. Roger Victor what's your vector?
