October 25, 201015 yr Has anyone been able to get this new GTX 480 video card to work successfully with Windows 7 64 bit and FSX?Thanks,Ron Musick Ron Musick, PP-ASEL-IA AOPA # 00642403
October 25, 201015 yr Yes, it works quite well in fact. I assume yours is not? What is the problem you are having? Scott Kalin VATSIM #1125397 - KPSP Palm Springs International AirportSpace Shuttle (SSMS2007) http://www.space-shu....com/index.htmlOrbiter 2010P1 http://orbit.medphys.ucl.ac.uk/
October 25, 201015 yr The current WHQL drivers for my 470 seem a bit glitchy at the moment, with flashing/dissapearing textures that I didnt experience with the earlier driver... October 25, 201015 yr Author Mine is freezing up FSX after about 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. I get the "MS FSX has quit working" message. I have tried old drivers, new drivers and all of them in between and can't seem to get it working. I have even thought that it was getting too hot so I spend another $500 to water cool it. I am running a Q9650 oc'd from 3 to 3.6, 8 GB memory on a XFX Nvidia 780i motherboard. I have also tried to run all the video sliders down, and moving the sliders in FSX to minimum. I am about ready to go back to my GTX 8800 video card and sell this one on ebay! If anyone has any suggestions, I'd sure appreciate hearing them..Thanks,Ron Musick Ron Musick, PP-ASEL-IA AOPA # 00642403
October 25, 201015 yr It doesnt sound like a "normal" graphic card problem. Are you sure it's not being caused by anything else? If your sure its the card, then I would recommend monitoring your GPU temperature to make sure its not overheating. You can use this program: http://www.cpuid.com/softwares/hwmonitor.html to do that. I would also suggest a complete un-install of your current drivers, firstly by installing them using "add/remove programs" from the control panel, and before your restart your computer, run this program http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D---Driver-Sweeper-%28Setup%29_d1655.html#download which will clean any remaining driver files that could cause conflicts. Then install the latest drivers from nvidia.com and see if it helps at all. It may also be worth updating any other drivers you may have, and also see if there's a newer bios available for your motherboard.Hope you can sort it cause the new fermi cards are great! October 25, 201015 yr Check the event viewer and see what module crashed, maybe it's not even related to the 480
October 25, 201015 yr Author I have removed and re-installed the various drivers several times. This is starting from a clean install of FSX also. The temps (since it is water cooled) is 42 deg. C. Unfortunately the event log doesn't show any failure or event. I am going to put in my GTX 8800 tonight and give it another try. I'll keep you folks updated. Thanks for all your suggestions, and I welcome more.Ron Musick Ron Musick, PP-ASEL-IA AOPA # 00642403

October 25, 201015 yr Run furmark or similar to stress the 480 outside FSX and see if it still crashes and if it's FSX related or not.Did you let FSX rebuild your fsx.cfg? Are you using any tweaks like BP=0? I have removed and re-installed the various drivers several times. This is starting from a clean install of FSX also. October 25, 201015 yr Author The only "tweak" I have tried is the HIGHMEMFIX. I've ran Furmark for over an hour and it does not crash. FSX has created a new fsx.cfg file and it doesn't seem to make any difference. So it looks like to me anyway that the problem is FSX, but I have uninstalled it and re-installed it several times now with no success. The only "tweak" I have tried is the HIGHMEMFIX. October 25, 201015 yr For people who are experimenting crashes, try to improve cooling of your system. These boards (and almost any hardware in you PC) have overheating procedures, and usually they shutdown for protection. Felipe Andrade at SBSP
October 25, 201015 yr Ron, can you tell me what operating system you are using? Sam Crawford "Don't judge the intelligence of an individual by the number of posts that they have made. Wait until they say something stupid first." CTC Cadet - www.ctcwings.co.uk
October 25, 201015 yr Commercial Member Check out the new AMD Radeon HD 6870!Before everyone goes and does this, you need to realize that the 6850 and 6870, despite their higher numbering, are actually mid-range cards more akin to the GTX460 than the 470 and 480. The 5870 is still faster than both the new 68xx cards. AMD's new high end cards aren't coming until the end of the year or early next year. You're also going to have all the same driver issues in FS that caused me to stop recommending AMD/ATI cards a while back. (no combined AA mode, lines through GDI+ gauges, potential problems with Vsync etc)Ron,What kind and wattage is your power supply? This sounds like it could be insufficient power to the card to me. What are your full system specs (include any overclocks - that massively raises the power consumption of the CPU which means less power for the 480) Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
October 25, 201015 yr Author My system is: XFX 780i motherboard, cpu is an Intel Q9650 overclocked from 3.0 to 3.6, 8 GB OCZ RAM memory, 1100 watt powersupply, one WD 300 GB Velociraptor hard drive, one DVD rom, four case fans, GTX 480 video card water cooled by Koolance Extos, cpu water cooled with Corsair H70, OS is Windows 7 64 bit. Video card temp is 41, motherboard is 39, cpu is 37.Ron Musick Ron Musick, PP-ASEL-IA AOPA # 00642403
