787 Crosswind Trials in Iceland

Featured Replies

Amazing video of crosswinds trials in Iceland. Seems to be some kind of measuring device stretched from the vertical sablilizer, I am guessing it is a crosswind componet measuring device.

Whoa, great footage. Watch that stabilizer vibrate at 1:35, looks scary. Love that wing flex, the wings are so thin at the outboard portions... Incredible. By the way, has anyone noticed those beacons and strobes? They certainly remind me of old, old versions of FS. They are not these "strobe" type lights anymore but instead have a noticable duration of emitting light to them. Never seen that before. Thanks for posting. :(sig.gif

If I'm not mistaken, the device trailing from the top of the vertical stabiliser is the static air probe used during testing to give precise static readings away from the airflow of the aircraft. I think the strobes are high intensity LED bulbs giving the different appearance and I have to agree they do look very FS'ish lolI love watching these crosswind test videos, goes to show the skills of the pilots and the abilities of modern aircraft. I've seen ones for the 777's, 747's, A380 now the 787's, does anyone know of more or other aircraft types?

The beacon is also an LED light, we got to see the dreamliner when it came out the AZ for hot weather testing. Quite an impressive aircraft, I was amazed how quite those trent 1000s areJohn

I'm still yet to see the 787, missed it at farnborough :( but to me it seems odd due to the size of the pax windows and engines- it looks small unlike the 777 lol

Did I actually ask about this? Just rechecked, and I didn't. Funny that you still answered my unasked question, because I was wondering what it was while watching the video. Then forgot to ask. Big%20Grin.gif LOLsig.gif

I'm lucky. Living on Queen Anne Hill in Seattle, I see them all the time coming in and out of BFI for their trial flights. Nothing this cool though....

Oh I love the 787, i sincerely hope that it sells well, to recoup from 748 :S..but it is a beautifully engineered aircraft and i love it to bits.I would hope that there was some guys in the PMDg development staff who have a softspot for this aircraft so we can grace a "PMDG 787" XD .. one can dream
