Attention: ATI CAT3.8 killing hardware...real

I too have experienced some oddities with my Sony GDF 520. I have had the monitor lose sync twice, and I've had FS show some very strange issues with part of the main panel chopped off with desktop showing on the lower 2/3 of the screen. I've also had 2 or 3 screen lockups in TW2004 which I wasn't having with 3.7s. I have never had these issues with any other Cat release. I switched back to the 3.7s just to be sure as I love this screeen and don't wish to take any chances. Again, I've had a few problems.Noel

Well, I have to say I am always a little sceptical when I read claims which state how much better one driver is when compared with the rest. In this case, from my experience having just taken them out for a good run, I can declare quite categorically these are definitely keepers. :)The menu selection problem in full screen has all but gone and the general performance of the sim seems significantly smoother, even during turns. If you were running Cats before be sure to uninstall the ATI Control Panel first, reboot and then try installing the Omega 2.4.96b drivers. You won't be disappointed. You don't have to uninstall the Cats, just install the Omegas over them. After you have checked and reinstated your Display Resolution, colour depth, FSAA, Anisotropy and preferred VSync settings in the driver, fire up Flight Sim. Go to the Hardware tab and check your new drivers have been detected. Change to your preferred resolution and colour depth and switch from Bilinear to Trilinear filtering. Then open the FS9.cfg file and you will note a second entry further down from the original, in my case:{DISPLAY.Device.RADEON 9800 PRO (Omega 2.4.96b).0}Highlight and cut this line plus the couple of settings below it and paste over the original 3 lines higher up in the file.Save the file, make a backup copy and go fly! >http://www.driverheaven.net/>>Topic: "ATI SPEAK: CATALYST 3.8 - The TRUTH not the Rumours" > >Good enough for me...I'm off to try them now :)>>MikeI think that is the trouble Mike, ATI has been quick to deny while at the same time there are some trust worthy folks having some real problems so the recommendation would be to use caution until the dust settles.

Not only monitors. As you may have seen from my earlier posts on this subject I had terrible stability issues with the 3.8's, that were very difficult to get rid off. Had to ultimately perform a system restore + full clean reinstall of 3.7's and FS2004. Currently running 3.7's and will not upgrade until this issue is resolved.Once bitten, twice shy...Joe

"I think that is the trouble Mike, ATI has been quick to deny while at the same time there are some trust worthy folks having some real problems so the recommendation would be to use caution until the dust settles."......fair enough, Paul. I am starting to wonder whether my success has anything to do with the fact that I now set 'Wait for Vertical Sync' to 'Always On' in both Direct3D and OpenGL. I see little point switching this off when my monitor's refresh is fixed at 60Hz. It will manage 70 and 75Hz but, as you know 60Hz is just fine with LCD flat panels - and I appear to have a good one (quite superb image with the correct digital monitor colour profile installed. It also has a 20ms recovery time). For the moment, at least, I'm a happy chappy :)Hope you manage to resolve your problems soon, as I'm certain you will.Best regards,Mike

I am really trying to figure out what is up with the VC segment nowadays. Is it a case of corporate conspiracy or the paranoid ramblings of a few individuals starting a rumour avalanche?. I believe most of you guys when you say your getting issues and I feel bad for those that are. My question is, why am I, and a lot of other people not experiencing these same issues?. I am currently running the leaked Dells from Omega and have Zero, ZIp, Zilch, Nada no problems concerns etc. I currently have my card clocked at 420/365 which should surely cause an issue if there were one but it doesn't. All menu flickering, tearing, smearing etc has all gone Bye Bye. IMO, the best set of drivers going and maybe DELL should rewrite them from now on. (God I can't believe I like something from the Giant producer of electronic appliances :) ).Again, to those with issues I hope they are rectified. I just wish we had an answer to a problem that as of right now can be neither proved nor denied. :(Bobby

Yes, I have considered the mass hysteria scenario as well. However, I have never in the past five years or so seen a debate of this nature in the VC segment. The only concrete thing I know is the pretty nasty stability issues I experienced with the 3.8's. I have not tried the leaked Dell drivers as they are based on 3.8, maybe they are indeed OK, but I am reluctant to have to go through the whole process of cleaning up my system again.Joe

"I am really trying to figure out what is up with the VC segment nowadays. Paul, you Sooooooo dissapoint me. Has anyone here forgotten COINCIDENCE??? Come on now fess up.....Your really monkeyboy over at Rage aren't you :)BobbyLet the flames fly......I feel 'em comin'Bobby

Hi.You seem to be trying to inflame and insult most of the people on this board. Your attitude is very common amongst superficial and less knowledgeable people, that try to get their point across by insults rather than facts. If these are coincidences, there sure are a lot of them. I used to design Video cards and I will be able to track this down, if the problem is the ATI, and I can prove it conclusively, it may take the destruction of another Monitor, they will be requested to reimburse people for the destroyed property. TV

TVAnd you are?? Trying to insult most people on this board??. Perhaps you should do a search before you post such statements. Spend some more time around here and you'll see that Paul and I have been having a go around since day 1. It's all in good fun. Did I ask for your opinion of my post??. Was it directed towards you??. If your so VC inclined as you say you are than have at it. Did you read the above post from Big. 3 Monitors. This is cause for the panic that has ensued lately?. Is it possible that the drivers are destryoying monitors. Sure it is. Is it probable? No. If it was an issue with the drivers than why are we not seeing hundreds of monitors being destroyed? This should be considered a fairly strong accusation and personally if I was ATI I would have a serious issue with it being stated without VERY solid proof showing the facts. Let me ask you a question? What is more probable, ATI releasing drivers that "Destroy" hardware, or a small number of monitors, out of the MILLIONS out there going bad and people looking for a reason for it. Right now, everything is purely circumstantial. Can you deny that? can you explain why my setup runs perfect with no issues? Or my wifes machine with her 9700Pro and the 3.8's?It would seem your the one attacking me for no reason. Take a step back and take a breath. Your above post presents you as uninformed and rude.Bobby

>>After 8 unsuccessful retries, the monitor displayed the "NO VIDEO SIGNAL FROM INPUT 1" message and the power light turned orange. A burning smell was coming from the back of the monitor. Hooking the monitor up to another system proved useless, as it did not start up."<

Oh, one other thing. I didn't realise that you could run CAT 3.8 with a GF4Ti4600 :-) or are your system specs in your post outdated....??

Joe, I am not certain, but I think he is "quoting" someone elses story. If you have a look, that entire snippet is contained in quotes.Jim

BobbyI just installed a ATI retail 9800 and did not use the installation CD just loaded the 3.8s from ATI. The little test that was performed worked well and identified my monitor prefectly. My monitor did not fry or expernce any problems with the 3.8s. I only have a AMD 2000+ and Windows Me. Still I only notice some minor flickering in FS9 when addressing the select aircraft, etc. May be some day when I have time I may use a different driver but for now, I'm happy with the 3.8s.CP
