MS Flight

Well, if the developers have got any sense they'll certainly want to look at that since it would appear to a feature which many simmers tend to want. Even a cursory glance at other sims and forums would reveal that traditionally where combat sims are concerned, the biggest and most common wished-for feature is a dynamic campaign (one of the things which made Falcon so great in fact, since you could do that multiplayer too). And if one looks at a lot of train simulators, notably Railworks, its 'career missions' have been a big talking point and probably helped to shift a few copies. I reckon if Slopey would have made Air Hauler multiplayer, he'd be retired in the Bahamas by now LOL.Ironically enough though, it is actually entirely possible to have a persistent career mode entirely within in FSX via the present mission system. Aerosoft demonstrated that is perfectly achievable with the wonderful African Airstrip Adventures, which is entirely open-ended, generates jobs for you to do and tracks your earnings, which are basically the elements you would need for a pilot career in a flight sim. If I was Mister Microsoft, I'd have snagged the makers of African Airstrip Adventures on day one of recruitment for people to join the Flight development team.Al
Thanks for the info Chock!

I dare speculate that's one of the reasons why MS Flight will sport LiveID...Cheers,- jahman.
No need to consider yourself offended at all! You are on the right track. To speculate (Verb):
  1. (intransitive) to think, meditate or reflect on a subject; to deliberate or cogitate
  2. (intransitive) to make an inference based on inconclusive evidence; to surmise or conjecture
  3. (intransitive, business, finance) to make a risky trade in the hope of making a profit; to venture or gamble

Speculator (Noun):

  1. (business, finance, flight simulation) One who speculates; as in investing, one who is willing totake volatile risks upon invested principle for the potential of substantial returns.

Cheers,- jahman.

Being myself definitely not a mothertongue I always appreciate to learn new stuff. Anyway I was ironic stating I felt offended infact I posted an emoticons :)Glad anyway to perpetrate my speculations Tounge.gif until MS will recognize it is not dealing with kids but with pro simmers instead. At the moment those videos witness MS is treating us like kids in their very early stages of life.

Juvenile - appropriate for young people?  How so?

Presumably because that's Microsoft's target market, where most of the sales and revenue will come from.

Bingo!! Whereas if you read the SDK help files for FSX, you definitely get the feeling development kits are aimed at a much more mature audience!Regards, Mike Mann

Absolutely! The videos appeal to the emotion of flying, the sense of adventure, the passion and "just the thrill of it" as Amelia Earhart was fond of saying. These are all emotions of the young at heart, i.e. "the juvenile". And only the juvenile spend lots of cash on buggy sim software and often plasticky hardware to keep simming for hours and hours just keep that passion alive. So it's not just the videos, this whole simming business is juvenile! And the day I get carted off into a Nursing Home I will go with my puter and FSXXVII under my arm and show off my "ILS Approach in a Stormy Night" flying skills to the nurses, and they will be impressed! :-)Cheers,- jahman.

adults like to have fun as well , but having fun doesn't make you juvenile per say. Juvenile is like, saying thats what she said on anything close to being sexual, wrapping a house with toilet paper, mooning someone, etc,  :(

Well, yes, the word "juvenile" does have several meanings. The meaning I am using is juvenile as in "youth", but not as in immaturity. The point I was trying to make is that you can be both a responsible adult and youthful at heart. That said, I haven´t made up my mind yet on whether or not I'll moon the nurses when they cart me off to the nursnig home... :-)

Oh, trust me. That will happen whether or not you intend to do so! :(

I think they mean the wider sense of the word juvenile, and not totally as in 'marked by immaturity and somewhat childish or simple'. That's a matter of opinion in some respects, but if we take for example, promo video entitled 'lift', where the narrator says something along the lines of: 'in theory there's a lot to getting an aircraft off the deck but in practice you just get going fast enough and pull back on the stick'.Well, I think most of us are aware that if you took that approach to trying to take off with a Boeing Stearman, you'd be cartwheeling across the the airfield in a fireball shedding wings and limbs all over the place. That is to say, there is no mention of having to take in all that 'theory' which gets brushed off in a blasé fashion by the narrator. That's clearly deliberate though, because having to think about torque roll, gyroscopic precession, crosswind components, feeding in the rudder, getting it up on the main wheels first so you can see where you are going and the airflow is at the right angle of attack etc, etc, would probably put people off who are the market sector MS are trying to expand the appeal of Flight to, with more game-like aspects (i.e. probably a lot of juveniles, but not exclusively so). Therefore, in that sense, it can indeed be thought of as juvenile. Having said that, juvenile is not always a bad thing. Anyone who has ever read any of Robert A Heinlein's famous juvenile novels will know that they can still be an enormously entertaining read even when you are an adult, because they are aimed at juveniles but not created in a childish manner, and it's probably also true that some juvenile aspects of a flight sim might be fun too, after all, there is no law saying we must grow up too fast and become boring old gits.Al
