October 25, 200322 yr Bobby... what time of day do you have set in the sim? Try changing the time. And you do have the Water Effects slider full to the right, correct?
October 25, 200322 yr Greg,Doesn't matter what time I set. Just get a darker or lighter version of what I posted. Altitude doesn't change image either.Water slider all the way right. Land and water at default for land only.Bobby
October 25, 200322 yr Hi Noel,Yes, I see them. If somehow this effect could be eliminated these water textures would be perfect for me. Unfortunately, shortly after their release, Bill seemed a bit touchy if you made any comments and appeared to be offering them to us on a take it or leave it basis. It must have taken him an age to create these textures so I can well appreciate he is feeling somewhat burned out at the moment. I guess we will have to try to be patient, after all they are free!We have got to cultivate people like Bill and his wife, not upset them.MikeP4 2.4GHz (400FSB), 1Gig PC2100 DDR Crucial, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB (Omega 2.4.96b), Gigabyte GA-8IRXP MoBo, Ultra-Quiet PSU 400W, WinXP Home (SP1), DirectX 9.0b
October 25, 200322 yr Hmmm... this from the RAS 172 3500' above S.F. Bay looking east toward KOAK at 08:30.Have you tried reinstalling the textures?
October 25, 200322 yr Greg,Reinstalled with the updated textures from Bill's site and wind up with the exact same thing. Renamed my FS9.CFG file. Set water detail to high. 4XAA and 16XAF(Performance) "Leaked" 2496 Drivers Yada, Yada, Yada. What's funny is they really look no different than the default MS textures on my machine. Why do I get this washed out crappy looking water? My hat is off to Bill for some amazing work. I just wish I could see it on my machine. Although I will say that browsing the thread that Bigshot posted I may just go with the FS2002 textures and follow the gentleman over there's steps. His water is absolutely stunning.( Again, nothing against Bill and all his work)Bobby
October 25, 200322 yr Greg,They're fixed!! It seems that there is a problem with the installation file. Depending on how they are installed, it may create a folder called textures instead of texture or, in my case created another scenery/world/texture folder within the FS9 secenery/world/texture folder. After noticing this, I cut and pasted the files to the default FS9 texture folder and Lo and behold...Water textures to die for :). Perhaps, and this is nothing against Bill I may remove the Mips but I'll fly hese for a bit to see. Thanks for the help anyway.Bobby
October 25, 200322 yr "Although I will say that browsing the thread that Bigshot posted I may just go with the FS2002 textures and follow the gentleman over there's steps. His water is absolutely stunning."Indeed they do. I think Bill's textures work pretty much the way he intended... he is afterall more into the bush flying. And that's OK. Just that some folks are looking at these new textures from heavy iron at 30K', and they just don't work in that scenario.Sorry you can't get them to work. They really are cool at low altitudes. And very framerate friendly.I've deleted 2K2 from my hard drive... anybody know what textures to extract from the 2K2 discs to get that sims water effects into FS9?

October 25, 200322 yr I never could get the default FS9 water textures to look decent. Same with the FS2k2 water textures. Both caused an extreme hit in performance too. Therefore, I just turned off the water slider and settled for the old style look of the FS2k2 dark waters and was content with that. Once I tried Bill & Lynns new textures, I was hooked almost immediately. Running AF at 16x on Performance and comparing to the old, these new textures are awesome to look at from above. It took a few flights from different angles to decide; but I'm hooked. They're definite keepers and they're very framerate friendly. This one shot convinced me. Seeing the waves and reflections on the surface and giving the illusion of transparent waters that I could see through and where I could see the bottom in shallow waters was all it took:http://www.x-plane.org/users/mgdbottled/FS9Water.jpg
October 25, 200322 yr I see them too, The rotating white patches or star's. In between the rotations it looks awsome, but when it does the rotation it looks unreal. Still the textures look cool!
October 25, 200322 yr Problems viewing the water textures :-(Hi...Downloaded the textures and placed them in FS9 > World > Texture and put "Water Effects" Slider on High, but all i see are huge white/grey blocks...Take a look at the 2 pics!Menu...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/45060.jpgIn the sim over the water...http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/45062.jpgAlso, i noticed that if i reset the sim, the slider went back to Low???Any info appreciated as I really look fwd 2 these textures :-)Mark
October 25, 200322 yr WOW, this is the update I've been waiting for! I wonder if it's possible to alter the actual height map of the bump texture, so you could make the waver smaller.Mark, what graphics card are you using? It must be DirectX 8.1 compatible, or it won't work. The file has been taken from the server btw., because of too much traffic . It is now available on flightsim.com and will probably be available on avsim soon.
October 25, 200322 yr >waves and reflections on the surface and giving the illusion>of transparent waters that I could see through and where I>could see the bottom in shallow waters was all it took:the problem with water is that one can esily overdo it and these water textures seem to have too many good things. Only a swimming pool or immediate shallows in tropics would have this much gloss and reflectivity in them. I am glad someone is experimenting with water in FS but I would call the above work to be too 'cute' to represent the vast majority of oceanic and inland waters in the world. For now I will stick with Ed Truthan's water textures - they are most realistic so far in my opinion.Michael J. Michael J.
October 25, 200322 yr I just seen it in the new section at www.fsfreeware.com/dcd/New . Statement from Bill:Posted by Bill on 10/25/2003, 5:31 am64.22.194.131Hi All,The response to our little water reflection update has been totally unexpected and very overwhelming!! Literally! We have been warned that our site will taken down today if bandwidth goes over the limit again..;o(( Therefore, I must shut down the file for download till traffic lets up! I have uploaded the file to flightsim.com and will attempt to upload to avsim today. The file should be up at those sites later today or tomorrow in the new files sections.Having said that, I did mention in the readme that these textures were a matter of taste and not for everyone! We all have differing views of life and perceptions of what our flight simulator should look like! With the addition of our new rig which allowed water reflections I was primarily interested in creating the sparkling water effect I see so often living and flying near the Mississippi River and those beautiful Minnesota lakes. To do this required some compromises at ground level and up very high. Hence the infamous dots which create the sparkle from above and which I try to think of as floating foam while on the surface. To all who have said "thank you", believe me, it is very much appreciated! For those who wish for a more sedate environment I will try to come up with a "lite" version of the package which eliminates the sparkles and gives a lower value wave action in a few days! This will give simmers a choice in setting up their flight sim to suit their individual tastes.Sorry to have to shut down the file for a bit but have no choice..;o( Best, Bill
