Bill Lyon's New Water Textures

Featured Replies

Cool; I was just repeating what the authors had said "Anyway, I've uploaded the package for those that have DX9 compliant cards ..." .Chris; thanks a bunch for those clouds. I think they're yours. They're awesome and give a nice big bump in the framerate department.

Hi,Thanks for the replies about the Radeon 9700 Pro card. I figured they would work, just wasn't positive. I still haven't got to install these and check them out for myself. Probably won't be able to until tomorrow. They look really nice in the screenies though. You never know, but perhaps they will be updated to tone down the size of the waves a little.Cheers,Jim

I gotta agree on the bump size, its way too big. Makes it look like your flying a model over your pool at home. I still think the water reflections are overdone also. Looks like plastic to me. I think Bill has done a great job with these, I just dont like them much. Its definitely going to be up to the user to decide, very subjective issue I think.hornit

There's no doubt FS needs to incorporate realistic water textures, along with many other textures, such as grassland, concrete and forest cover, and it's great to see efforts by others to do some of that work. But in this case I fully agree with your assessment, and certainly appreciate the objectivity. The FS groups need a lot more of that.

It's telling you that you don't have a DX9 card!Hope this helps,JimActiveSky Support

Looks very odd with my Radeon 9700 Pro. It looks like the sparkles come from white patches that rotate, giving off sparkles off the water waves. Sometimes it looks fine, but the rotating white patches are not good. Do others see this too?Noel

>RUN, don't walk to get these!>>here: http://members5.boardhost.com/golden/msg/2340.html>>All i can say is WOW!!!!>>Thanks a lot, Bill!!!>>-MichaelWhooffaa. Didn't think that it would work on my almost "over the hill" Dell system. P-4 2 gig. Complete with the standard Dell G-Force 3 card. Well, it was standard back then. Me thinks. However, the bloody thing works.!!! Not one word of a lie. I works. On my way to Panama. Second trip around the world -- but this time will take a moments pause to fly at dawn and dusk ---One last word ------------ Thank you!!!!!!Frenchy -- out.

Noel; they're discussing that here: (currently 4 pages)http://www.sim-outhouse.com/forums/showthr...=&threadid=4811 There's also some discussion about it over at the original download site. If you download DXTBmp, you can remove the mipmaps. I know what you're referring to; but the textures are an enormous improvement over the default textures. The reflections don't work without the white caps or dots as you describe em'. Bill Lyon is taking a look at it. Maybe he can tone em' down some. He currently uses an ATI card running the 3.8 drivers, so it's not like you're seeing something he isn't.

Thx Bigshot. I still kind of wonder what the heck the rotating/cycling issue is. It looks fantastic if you could just keep stop the rotation or move it much slower. I guess it is to prevent ugliness if you should by chance be lined up the wrong way in which case you'd see lil white boxes. If it wasn't for this issue they would be great. Still can't figure out what moparmike did to get that perf looking water from FS2002. I tried importing the env files from 02 and it didn't look quite like that. Also, I have oceanfX, but it has tons of water texture files. Couldn't figure out what was going on there and didn't want to mess up my FS9 install.Cheers,Noel

Bill's water is pretty slick, but perhaps a bit too surreal for me. I think it looks great, but just not my taste for flying.I think the best, most realistic replacement textures I've found come straight out of FS2002 (see the screenie below)http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/44993.jpg

This is what I see while in the water swimming err taxiing in the C208. What I see at altitude looks awesome !I'm wondering if this is something that can be fixed with some adjustments somewhere ?I'm seeing some white spots that have been mentioned above as well as I only see the new water in close to the aircraft. If I look farther away (maybe 100' virtually) I see the original water texturing.http://forums.avsim.net/user_files/45007.jpg

Noel,Check this out. DX9b, Sliders set where they should be, Card at stock clock speeds. Have you ever seen such UGLY water?. Hey Bigshot, any ideas on what's the issue here ?I've pulled enough hair out.Bobbyhttp://forums.avsim.net/user_files/45015.jpg

Absolutely unbelievable!!!I landed the Caravan, and immediately got seasick!Keep up the great work, Bill.Joe Long
