Bill Lyon's New Water Textures

Featured Replies

I have to agree with some other posters in that thse textures are not my cup of tea. It gives the effect more of flying over a small swimming pool rather than the expanse of a river, sea or ocean. I said in another forum that it's like eating chocolate easter eggs. You can't get enough of it at first but then you get sick of it pretty quickly. I can't come up with better terms than the ones already used. Plasticky, surreal and overdone are all words seem to best describe them. They just look very incongruous, especially compared to other textures in the sim. It will be interesting, though, to see what the more "sedate" version will look like if he does one.To Mark,The problem is with your Geforce MX card. You need to buy a better one if you wish to see these textures.

Hi Michael, "For now I will stick with Ed Truthan's water textures - they are most realistic so far in my opinion. These texture are not ocean water, but only the water reflection texture. Ed Truthan's do not include these texture in his files. You can use the Ed Truthan's water texture and these texture togheter.or Ed Truthan's water texture and Ms default water reflection or others reflection.ThanksChris Willis[link:fsw.simflight.com/FSWMenuFsSim.html]Clouds And Addons For MsFshttp://fsw.simflight.com/fsw.jpg

Kind Regards

Uhhhhh DAMN!! :-eek Those look AWESOME!! :-hahJust that d/l link does not work anymore, I got them from www.fsfreeware.com .Thanks for the heads up!!!Etienne :-wave

Sure it's a matter of personal taste, but let's not complain about too big waves or that we don't see the fishes in the water...:-) Compared to the stock FS9 water textures this is a very big leap forward fo me!If Bill decides to improve the textures, i will be more than happy. If not, i'm still happy with what i got because this was the update i was waiting for, but i never expected that such effects are possible by now.Great work, Bill, and a big Thank You again!!!!Cheers,Michael

Dude is a class act. This is the kind of freeware spirit I miss. It's nice to see vestiges of it rear its head from time to time.Rock solid, Bill!

Mark.FS9 does not use any DX9 graphic code, all that is required is a DX7 graphics card as is stated by MS at the FS9 site. There are some known issues with getting FS8/9 to correctly recognize many GF2/GF4MX cards but you will have to do a search here in the forums to find out how get it setup right.Try "GF2 reflections" or something similar in your search field.Edit:Sorry Mark, wasn't thinking cocnerning the bump mapping needed and only available from GF3 on up.If yer on a budget go for the ATI 9600XT or the NV5700-ultra both in the $200 range.

Bill Lyon's new textures are amazing and shows his talent for modifying MS FS in new and interesting ways. I had earlier thought that it would nice to have moon reflections, and with Bill's changes have found that it is now possible. Am I right that these moon reflections show even though the moon is below the horizon? If Bill is contemplating some changes I would like to offer some input.I prefer, as Bill has stated, a more sedate motion with much less swirling of the textures such that it represents better what is seen from high up. The change in size of the swirling textures seems a bit too severe. I would like to see the bright parts of the reflections to be less bright both day and especially moon reflections at night. It would seem that the reflections should never be brighter or even less bright than the source of the light.I really love the sunset colors, they are very nice. Please, Bill, take these comments as constructive and ignore any or all comments if you feel them objectionable.Respectfully,Jim Jones

I have not laugh so hard since I can't remember :-lolAndy

Noel,I see the same shine rotation as you see, and in my opinion it is very unrealistic...looks like a game texture looping....I have a radeon 9800pro.Ulisses

Just pretend it is a school of shiners! ;-)http://saltydogfly2.avsim.net/images/avsim_sig.jpg"Oh, my bologna has a first name, it's H-O-M-E-R,My bologna has a second name, it's H-O-M-E-R..." - Homer Simpson

Noel,I,too, see those rotating patches. Very annoying. The water also looks strange close up like when you're landing. I didn't like the rotating so I replaced the files with the original. I have a 128 mb GeForce Ti4200 card.Ray
