QualityWings 757 (FSX) - mini review

Featured Replies

I thought I should post to tell you how pleased I (finally!) am with the QualityWings 757.There were a number of issues with the first release which had me tearing my hair out in frustration ie non-working autobrakes (for me and some others), random overspeed warnings, buggy FMC. However with the SP2 release most of the problems appear to have been resolved. I still can't use the QW autobrakes on this simulation. They didn't work for me until I went into the cfg file and told it to use the default MS autobrake system. This works autobrake 1,2,3, but not max autobrake. Not a major problem - at least I can stop on the runway now!So the good news is - it's a fantastic looking aeroplane! Wonderful realistic sounds for both the RR and PW engines (crank the stereo up!). "Realistic" flight dynamics - really nice to hand fly and feels like you're in control of a large commercial airliner. I can't claim to have flown the real 757 - just the BA simulator a few years ago but I do possess a UK Commercial Pilots Licence and so I think I'm slightly qualified to comment on the lovely handling of this classic airliner. The FMC appears to do what you tell it to now. Easy to upload flightplans from the FS flightplanner into the FMC. It does miss a few of the extras you would get on a "full" simulation (ie info on the optimum FL in cruise) but QW have never claimed to produce a fully simulated product and I think they've got the balance just right. The 2D and VC work well although the VC can be a bit difficult to see unless you zoom in a bit (the ONLY disadvantage IMHO over the Captain Sim version of this aircraft).VC lighting is good at night. No blinding lights from the overhead unless you want them.I'm not a big "eye-candy" guy - I am more interested in systems and handling. The QW 757 is excellent in this respect. But I will admit to switching to spot view many times to just watch it cruise gracefully through the FSX skies:)There are also some very nice repaints available for free from their website.I have absolutely NOTHING to do with QualityWings and I have had a go at them in the past for some of the earlier bugs. Now they've been mostly ironed out I can highly recommend their 757 if you want a nice balance between eye candy, systems and a good handling aircraft for your FSX enjoyment.Hope you found this review useful.Merry XmasAdam

I pretty much mirror what's said above.I was having soooooooo many problems with the initial FSX release. The FMC wasn't doing much of anything correctly. Now it works great! FPS seem a little better than the first version too, though I'm not sure if that has to do with my FSX cfg changes or changes to the plane itself. Either way I'm not complaining.Great job QW team! Beats the pants off the CS version! :(

Ah! Damn I forgot to mention FPS.Mine sits around 30fps in the VC at a large-ish airport. A little better than the previous version. 40-50fps in the VC in cruise but I do have a brand new PC..And yes there's a sale on there just noticed myself:p I think the link should be http://www.qwsim.com/index.php/home as the one above takes you to the forum where you must be registered to view that particular thread.

True. The QW 757 has now FSX native models, which improved fps in FSX, AND, at the same time it maed HD textures for the VC and repaints possible! Thus, even though it's all (or at least partially) HD now, you still get better frames. Only a few repaints are HD now, AA, BA, United post merger, and 2 or 3 others, but the HD paintkit is in production, so expect painters to make your favorite HD paint as well ;)

I have an older machine now, but it performs quite well. Can you contrast this bird against the PMDG 747-400X, or their J41 so I have a comparison?Thanks--I really like the 757 and have always wanted one, but I need to make sure it will fly well . . .Noel

I don't own the JS41, so can't speak for that. About 747, we all know it's a real heavy on the frames, but the QW averages around 3 to 4 fps more here. Keep in mind I usually am at around 15 fps in the PMDG747 at airports on the ground (default scenery) and the QW makes up for 17 to 18. On a powerfull system the gain would be even better. I got a Q6600 at 2.4 Nvidia 8600GT 512MD, 3GB RAM. Just around the minimum for FSX to run it somehow "smoothly"

Noticeable improvement in frames after the service pack and hotfix.

Thank you all, I took the plunge and it's pretty nice, esp for the price paid. I do notice w/ just this 757 I will have periodic 'hangs' of maybe 1 second or so that I have never seen w/ any other addon aircraft--kinda feels like a huge file transfer dominating processes during these brief but irregularly regular intervals. I of course defragged my OS and FSX drives, but to no avail. Could be just the dense weather so I should try the same flight w/ a different bird before jumping to conclusions. The autopilot seems slow to respond compared to the 747X, which as you would know is very responsive and impressive at controlling the 747--as you never see overspeed conditions, or rarely w/ the 747X. Not so with the 757, and I chalk it in part up the fact it is very slow to respond to new autopilot settings/changes. All in all, it's decent. I can't wait for the 737NGX however ;o)Noel

You really can't compare systems modeling, PMDG goes for the full 100% sim. QW is a more accurate CLS airplane. Should pick up the Level-D 767 even though it's showing its age.
