Recommended Gold Star award for a new freeware aircraft

Featured Replies

I hope I can catch the attention of the right person. A freeware Dassault Mirage III has just been released that raises the bar for freeware aircraft by an incredible amount. Please check it out and consider the possibility of honoring this developer with a Gold Star. And yes, if there are no staff reviewers available, I'll do it. (Former AVSIM staff reviewer). This is big news for us FS9 holdouts - we've had some great scenery and aircraft released for FS9 lately and this version is still very much alive. Now we have what has got to be ranked as among the absolutely finest freeware aircraft ever released for any version of Flight Simulator. (Ranks up there with classics like the FSD B58 Hustler and C133 transport released by FSD for FS98 and Rick Piper's incredible HS748 for FS2004 - along with a short list of others that include names like Milton Shupe and David Maltby)Please give this serious consideration - this is an absolutely astonishing project for a freeware developer and really deserves recognitionIanHere's the linkThe freeware Mirage IIIS Interceptor for FS2004 by Isra is now available for download at http://www.mirage4fs.comFollow the links on the "What's New" page.

Kind of sad really. If this was a nasty or negative posting, it would get an instant response. But something positive doesn't get the time of day...

You'd probably get more of a response in the FS2004 forum, this section doesn't get to much traffic, unless there is a problem with AVSIM itself. I'm sure it's as good as you say, but I use FSX, is it compatible?

Thanks

This would be the right forum, but your post was on Friday, and it's understandable that the "right" people just haven't seen your post yet. This forum doesn't get much traffic compared to others, and it's not uncommon for staff members to take a break from the forums for a few days. Regarding this addon, you're best bet would be to send a PM to Robert Whitwell. I'm sure he'd be more than happy to let you review it, if you wish.

Bad news Tom - it's FS9 only. The developer worked on it for several years so probably when he started FSX was still pretty new. And it's a "one-off" project - when he released it he also announced it would be his last. (Hopefully he will change his mind)Ian

Fair enough - I guess I've become accustomed to the more "hasty" pace of the other forums where responses are measured in hours rather than days. It was just discouraging to see this thread sinking down the page with nobody apparently taking notice. No offence was meant. I will contact Robert and/or the Reviews EditorThanksIan

Kind of sad really.

A little late, but thanks for the heads-up & link. I have the AlphaSim Mirage IV (now freeware), which goes like a bat out of hell, so it'll be interesting to compare. I'm normally one for old civil trundlers (the Vickers Viscount is a favourite), but sometimes it's nice to pull all the stops out, particularly if the scenery topography's interesting.

You will love it. I am also one for old civil trundlers - I have flown the HS748 in real life and Rick Piper's freeware version is fantastic. Also love David Maltby's DH Comet IV and BAC 1-11. I do remember trying a Vicount a long while back but I'm pretty addicted to virtual cockpits so unless there's a new release I probably won't be trying it again. (And having come very close to a mid-air collision with a Viscount long, long ago, maybe I shouldn't even think about it or I'll have nightmares!)

The sound you heard was action , Jeremy "rightseater" Fletcher alluded to it earlier when he suggested that a user review was the way to approach it, its good to read this thread as it makes us aware of the plane , but as well aware of the limitations on volunteering as the means of generating reviews, Avsim’s Entire Staff are Volunteers , the items to be reviewed are placed on a list of generally more than thirty items, Reviewers select a release themselves, never have i seen one assigned. With this system in place there is an inevitable delay in response time , another obstacle is the sheer volume of products released and submitted for review is substantially more than can be reviewed, leaving further shortcomings in coverage of outstanding freeware.Steve (Bear) Cartwright did Bear's "Ultimate Big Boy" List , Bear's Cave Revived, The Treasure Chest by Staff reviewer Trevor Clark was another series, what we need is More Reviewers! , Be part of the solution, Volunteer Today!

I hear you and don't entirely disagree but there are a couple of things I would point out.1. There is almost never any kind of recognition of freeware on AVSIM. I can't remember when the last one was since "Bear" stopped his column. I don't think it needs to be a "review" in the full sense. If it's freeware anyone can just download it and reach their own conclusions. But isn't it possible to institute some way of alerting the community to exceptional freeware and giving the developers some kind of recognition and praise?2. Yes, there is a "users review" section and it's the equivalent of the society column in a newspaper. Most people don't even notice it let alone read it. But a mediocre payware product gets an instant banner headline in the AVSIM news section at the very least, and if they are lucky, they get a review posted as well. And if they are smart, they will also provide an occasional service pack so they garner yet another headline announcement to get their product noticed even further as well as stalk the forums and make sure there's a thread there announcing it as well.3. If you read my first post, I actually did volunteer to write a review of the Mirage III but the offer was ignored.I'm definitely not wanting to sound critical of the AVSIM volunteers who do all the work to keep this amazing and wonderful site operating. You all deserve a gold star! I was just hoping to start some thinking outside the box so we can address a long-standing issue - the lack of recognition and rare signs of gratitude toward those who go "above and beyond" in providing exceptional freeware to the community. Forgive me for mentioning an old gripe, but it illustrates what I'm trying to say here. Several years ago one of the most prolific and talented providers of quality AI freeware announced that he was quitting. I wrote to the AVSIM editors asking that we at least announce the news and say thank you for all he had contributed. I was told that "we don't do that." But we announce as "news" any and every kind of trivia, usually verbatim, that a payware PR blurb says.I'm not trying to criticize - I'm trying to get us to rethink some things and come up with a solution. Would I be willing to volunteer to write for such a "column" along the lines of Bear Cartwright? Absolutely! You have it in writing. I can't replace Bear - he was one of a kind. But I am willing to volunteer to write a regular column if I think it will get freeware developers the recognition, including an occasional Gold star, that they deserve. But I'm not going to waste my time burying it in a forum that few people ever look atLet's see if we can get a constructive dialog going and come up with some creative solutions rather than just denying the problemSuggestions welcome

There is no prohibition against submitting a review to our Reviews Editor, anyone can do it, it’s the way all signed on in fact.We both wish for the same thing , the credit due freeware producers and a means of having outstanding freeware reviewed, working on a review to submit is the first step for anyone interested, a warm reception is assured .As regards news submissions , i believe i recall the situation you mention , and would have turned down the submission, and have turned down a few like it where i receive a “ we regret to inform you that XXXX will no longer produce freeware because “ , , it’s regrettable, but items that might also appear as doing ones wash in public are not going to make it on to the front page.

I hear you on the news thing and recognize that it would take some judgment calls to decide what is newsworthy or not. If it's a major site or producer closing down, like the Italian Scenery Design group or Henry Tomciewz, I still think it's genuine news. But we can agree to disagree on this...I am a former AVSIM staff reviewer (my last one was the preview of FS9) so I know I can submit a satisfactory review. I was thinking something more along the line of The Bear Cave. But it would have to be a collaborative thing as I am an exclusively FS9 Luddite so wouldn't be looking at FSX products. Let me think about it and maybe I will send a proposal to???? Who do you think????

Robert Whitwell is the man to contact for reviews , Avsim's Contact Us page is where we are found, all the departments have room for folks to get involved, supporting ones hobby takes many forms , they all are equally important in adding to the wealth of information and understanding its application in FS, it adds up to a better flight for everybody.

OK - I will try to contact him and see where it goes. I didn't have much luck the last time I tried but maybe he was away on business or something
