New Build For FSX : i7 2600K or i7 980X

I'm in the process of building a new computer for FSX and I'm wondering if anyone has any comparisons between the SB i7 2600k & i7 980x? I will be using a EVGA GTX 580 SC VC.Don

Do mean like this post in the thread pinned at the top of this forum?http://forum.avsim.net/topic/325610-sandy-bridge-benchmark-testing-results/page__view__findpost__p__1926084scott s..

There are several comparisons on the Internet done by "experts" between the two. Just Google i7 2600k vs i7 980x. You will find the 980x wins out in most benchmarks and the 2600k wins in some areas of the benchmark too. As Scott indicated, it is discussed here too but the benchmarks between the chips is what you want. The difference in the benchmarks is extemely small so if all comes down to costs. The 980x is around $1000; the 2600K can be found at Micro Center for about $280. So, if you want to pay $600 more to get a bit more probably unnoticable performance, go ahead. There's a 990x coming out soon, or suppose to be released this quarter so you might wait for that chip if you plan to go with the 900 series chip. If you go for the 2600K you can take that $600 you have left over and buy a nice SSD like I did. My best advice is to look at my system setup plus others who have posted their systems in their signatures and go from there. The EVGA 580 you plan on getting is definitely a good start! Best regards,Jim

Wow! what I've learned is that... I need to wait to see what Intel is coming out with. The items I've purchased so far I can use except for the Corsair Dominator GT2000 memory 3x2GB CL8. Now I might just try a SSD. Here are the components I've just ordered:EVGA GTX 580 SCSILVERSTONE TJ11Western Digital VelociRaptor WD4500HLHXWestern Digital Caviar Black WD1002FAEXCORSAIR H70CORSAIR DOMINATOR GT 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 2000

SB is a tock. its not a new architecture. just a die shrink.Like a 480gtx and a 580gtx. New chipset, new microarchitecture. SB is a tock:http://www.anandtech.com/show/3871http://www.legitrevi...1/Tick_Tock.jpg
Read those links carefully : "Sandy Bridge is the next major architecture from Intel. What Intel likes to call a tock"A tock is not a shrink, that's a tick. SB is a new architecture

Techology...It amazes me! If you wait around for the next best chip or the best price, forget it...What would be great is someone write a flight simulator program for the "Xbox360" with Kinect controls then you could set up your flight panel with your fingers....Then you would need to connect to vatsim...Maybe it's already in design stage, who knows?Bob FDX183 www.fedexvac.org

Wait until the new SB hit the market, they may come out with a six core and maybe 8 core down the road, the other advantage is the new socket will use the DDR3 triple chanel memory, the SB as of now can use DDR3 dual chanel with the 1355 socket. They may also have DDR3 (4) four chanel soon for the new SB.Peoples focus to much on the CPU alone when building a new rig for FSX, what they are missing is the hardware to feed that processor and the hardware to take what the CPU will give...When building a new rig you should always go with the mobo first and build around it, to many peoples are buying a mobo who can take memory rated at 2200MHz and will use some 1333MHz or 1600MHz in it?? Just buy a mobo with a max memory speed of 1333MHz or 1600MHz....you will save money and you will take full advantage of your mobo. The other way around is also true, some will get a high end mobo and put some DDR3 2200MHz in it and overclock their i7 920, 950 and other CPU at 4.0GHz....??? No way you can fully take advantage od some 2000MHz or 2200MHz memory at that GHz speed...I just built a new rig (to be outdated soon) with the best hardware I could find to go along with the mobo (look in my sig) and I can tell you something.....FSX rock, is it perfect....naaaaa but I can fly at high FPS without stutterings. Here's some short 60 sec. vid. done with fraps....no editing with everything maxed out but car traffics at 20% and water at 2 x low.....remenber Fraps + ENB + youtube = not the best to show what my rig can do, the original vid. do not have any stutterings what so ever...
To answer your other question I myself as of today will take the 990X (if one can afford it) just because it's a six core CPU and we all know FSX can use more than four core. There is no such think as overkill in FSX (or pc's world) and if you "wanna" play you have to pay.....

We do???

+1. A 980X / 990X is a terrible option now with SB available IMHO.@ Alain, just asking. Have you ever tried your 980X with two RAM sticks (dual channel) and 2 cores disabled?

I never try with 4 core and DDR3 dual chanel....don't see why I should? As for the 2600K, it's the way to go today as far as building a new rig for FSX if money is tight, I'm a hard core simmer so when the time come to buy new hardware for FSX I go for the best, did I need that SSD card for FSX http://www.newegg.co...N82E16820227521 or DDR3 2000MHz at 7-7-7-21 and the UD-9 to be able to run FSX ...ABSOLUTLY not...but for me I wanted the best for FSX.I got that SSD card because I wanted to take the sata bolttleneck out of the equation building my rig, one less thing to deal with. Here is a review between the 2600K and the 980X with the 980X 2 core disable...as you can see the 2600K is the winner but not by much http://www.xtremesys...ad.php?t=264693It's like I said before, if you want a new rig for all around use I'll go with the 2600K myself, just keep in mind we are talking about FSX here and FSX can use 6 core.

But FSX can only use the extra cores for texture loading, there's no performance gain. The reason I asked about the 4 cores / dual channel test is to know if you could see any noticiable difference (more blurries? more stutters?). Also, what's your uncore frequency please?
