April 5, 201115 yr I would like to build a new system as i've been using a laptop for my flying which to put it plainly... sucks!I have budget constraints and the below just about falls within my budget.I'd like to hear your opinions on the below setup?Coolermaster RP-600-PCAR eXtreme power 600w Western Digital WD6402AAEX Caviar Black 640GB SATA3 7200rpm Asus ENGT440/Di/1GD5 NVIDIA GeForce GT440 1GB GDDR5 128-bit PCI-E x16Intel Core i5-2500K Quad-Core LGA1155 3.3GHz Boxed Processor (Sandybridge) - I plan to OCCoolermaster Hyper 212 Plus CPU Cooler Gigabyte GZ-X3 Black Chassis with Side Vented Panel - No PSU Intel "Buffalo Flat" DP67BA LGA1155 Dual-Channel DDR3 PCI-E x16 Mushkin 998768 Silverline Low-Voltage 3x2GB DDR3-1333 1.5v CL9 Samsung B2230H 21.5" 5ms 70,000:1 Widescreen LCD MonitorThanks!
April 5, 201115 yr Pretty nice. I would have went for a Gtx 280 or something similar for the gpu. The 440 is for media centers its a very weak gpu for any GFX related software. Especially at your resolution. A Walker
April 5, 201115 yr GTX 460 is a good card. You'd be happier with it than the one you have listed.EDIT: You might also consider a modular power supply. It isn't required, but the lack of excess wires makes for a neater/easier setup. They generally cost a little more, but not too much. April 5, 201115 yr I think i'll stick with the PSU... already a little over budget! Oops! :(LOL, it happens. I put 2 GTX580's in mine recently for my other games when 95% of the time it's just running FSX & I get no noticeable benefit... April 5, 201115 yr Commercial Member Agree on the video card - get a GTX 460, 560 Ti, 570, or 580. Those are all based on the latest high performance Nvidia chipset. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
April 6, 201115 yr Totally agree re the video card.A bigger problem is the motherboard, which will not enable you to overclock. See the technical product specification here at 3.11You can only adjust the multiplier down. #####??This is consistent with the limited oc-ability of intel boards.Personally, I find gigabyte boards very easy to crank. A different board might also allow you to have some RAM that is faster than the 1333 you propose. My $0.02.happy building,Jeff Hunter Jeff Hunter
April 6, 201115 yr Author I thought any P67 based board would be fine to OC... I'd better do a little more investigation then!
April 6, 201115 yr Author How about this: Asus P8P67-M LGA1155 Dual-Channel DDR3 (New B3 Sandybridge)
April 6, 201115 yr I have the same board except it's not the M version and it works absolutely great.
April 6, 201115 yr It's actually so stable that I decided to give a try at 4.8 :( So far for 4.8 I have vcore of 1.38 in Bios (although hwinfo reports a max of 1.352 at full load, whic makes me wonder if I could go lower in bios) and all is great. I ran 20 passes of IBT at the highest setting and everything went great, with max temps in the 65-69 range when testing. It might be my imagination, but the sim seems a bit smoother (my fps are locked at 30) at 4.8 than 4.7 with full everything at FSDT KFLL.I might try for 4.9 or 5, but I don't really want to go much higher with Vcore.Hope this helps.
April 6, 201115 yr Author It helps plenty! Thanks Richard! One more question, will my PSU with 600W be enough to OC to 4.7+ considering my GFX card choice?
