April 6, 201115 yr Commercial Member Greg,Try this Asus Power Supply Wattage Calculator... it'll give you an indication of what the minimum would be. http://support.asus.com/PowerSupply.aspx?SLanguage=enThough 600W is alright, I'd recommend getting 700 or more in order to provide stable power usage. I have a Corsair AX750 Gold and while its a bit expensive, its one of the nicest PSU I've ever used and modular. You only plug in the cables you actually need and this type of PSU is a smart PSU, it determines what you need, gives you what you need and in turn you save on your electricity bill. April 6, 201115 yr Author Hey Jason,Thanks for the quick reply!I am already having to explain why I need this new machine to my better half... she is a little doubtful though... :(
April 6, 201115 yr Commercial Member I am already having to explain why I need this new machine to my better half... she is a little doubtful though... :(Greg, I went through that when I had to justify to my wife why I needed this new computer. Took me a couple months but in the end, I needed it mostly for work as my old system was starting to show its age. The reason she initially resisted was we didn't have the finances yet. Just recently we managed to find the finances to allow me to get the upgrade. This is what I upgraded to:Asus P8P67 Deluxei5 2500K OC'd at 4.7GHz8GB G.Skill Ripjaws F3-10666CL9DEVGA GTX570Corsair Graphite 600T Case (nicest case I've ever had)Corsair AX750W PSUCorsair H70 Liquid CoolerThis system runs FSX very, very nicely with most sliders to full and roughly half a dozen at 75%, the experience is fluid like smooth. This of course with most commercial add-ons and *******' (Bojote) FSX tweaks. Financial damage was only limited to just under $1600 CDN with taxes...Cheers, Jason Brown - Exterior Model Engineer,http://www.precisionmanuals.comSpecs: MSI Z97 Gaming 7 | Intel i7 4970K OC @ 4.6GHz | Gigabyte GTX970 G1 4GB | 16GB (2X8GB) G.Skill Trident | Corsair Air 540 White Case | Corsair AX750 750W PSU | 27" Samsung SyncMaster 275T+ | 27" Samsung S27D850 | 13" Wacom Cintiq | Windows 10 Professional x64
April 7, 201115 yr Author Hi again everyone...Just one more question, there seems to be no stock of the Hyper 212+ anywhere at the moment. Is the V6 (non GT) a good alternative? I have found it for only a little more then the Hyper 212+? Or will it be more worthwhile going for the GT version or V8. (Almost the same price)Thanks again!

April 7, 201115 yr How about the MSI P67A-GD65 instead of Asus (P8P67 series)? I was planning to take the MSI P67A-GD65 but now I'm doubting.andHow about the Corsair A70 cooler instead of the H70? I'm planning to overclock aswell. Steven Albi
April 7, 201115 yr Author The H70 is too pricey for me at the moment.I like the sound of the V6 or the V8... is it worth going for the V8?
April 7, 201115 yr I had a V8, it's huge. It does the job OK, but I am happy I replaced mine with a Hyper 212+. Is there a way you can order from Newegg? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103065&cm_re=hyper_212%2b-_-35-103-065-_-Product
April 8, 201115 yr Author Nope unfortunately not. Newegg doesn't ship to South Africa...Locally they will get the hyper 212+ in next month but i'd rather have the system by then.I live in South Africa & it gets pretty hot in summer here so I want to make sure that the cpu stays cool!
April 8, 201115 yr You can get newegg to ship to www.myus.com, who'll then on-forward it to you. Works well. Not sure how cost effective it is if you're just buying a small amount of gear.I'd also give some thought to the Noctua 120mm coolers. Like you, it gets pretty hot down under. I've found the H70 is a really great solution, but failing that the noctua gets consistently great reviews.Re the intel boards, for some reason intel's bios(es??) are pretty poor when it comes to tweaking. That ASUS board you suggest will work a treat, though.cheers,Jeff Jeff Hunter

I'm planning to overclock aswell. There's nothing wrong with the MSI board, but the ASUS is pretty clearly the better one for this generation - they have the really neat GUI-based UEFI thing that the MSI doesn't have. (this is the new replacement system for the BIOS - it has menus and full mouse support, you can access stuff from inside windows etc)The H70 is too pricey for me at the moment.I like the sound of the V6 or the V8... is it worth going for the V8?Do they have the Corsair A70? (air series, not the water H70) That one is cheap and has benched very well against the top air coolers like the Megahalems or NH-D14. I would not go with the V6 or V8, those aren't going to be able to handle the high overclock. Ryan MaziarzFor fastest support, please submit a ticket at http://support.precisionmanuals.com
April 8, 201115 yr I'm pretty sure MSI's P67 boards come with UEFI, it's Gigabyte that still uses the old ones for what I know.+1 for staying away for the V8, too pricey for how it performs. For a cheap & good cooler, the CM Hyper 212+ or the Mugen 2The Mugen 2 is cheaper and quieter than the A70, performs just about the same, and you can add another fan down the road for better performanceEDIT: the Mugen is big, not sure it will fit in that case. If you are going to overclock you may want to get a decent mid-tower at least Edited April 8, 201115 yr by dazz
April 19, 201115 yr Author I'm reposting this from the hardware forum seeing as the people here helped me in making my pc decision.Hi everyone, I hope you can help me...Last night I left my pc running (& it has been running now without a problem for about 5/6 days) and when I woke up in the morning it was still running but there was nothing on the screen. (ie. no signal).I tried to reset & that didn't work. I tried the off button and that didn't work either. I had to disconnect the power at the back to turn it off. I then switched it back on and fans etc all ran but... nothing on the screen. No bios, no windows... nothing. Initially the DRAM_LED light came on so I figured it might be a RAM issue. So I pulled the RAM out and then placed it back in one at a time. Still nothing and the DRAM_LED only lights once the pc starts and does not come on again. It seems like it continues to boot though nothing makes its way onto the screen.Does this sound like the GFX card is bust? I have no idea what the problem could be so i'm open to anything!Specs are in my signature...Thanks everyone!
April 20, 201115 yr Is there activity from the power supply?Does the monitor power up if you just turn it on? (normally it will say "no signal" or something to that effect)Read your manual for how to reset CMOS... most likely your board with have a easy switch or you may have to pull out the battery on the mobo. | My Liveries | FAA ZMP | PPL ASEL | | Windows 11 | MSI Z690 Tomahawk | 12700K 4.7GHz | MSI RTX 4080 | 64GB 6000 MHz DDR5 | 500GB Samsung 860 Evo SSD | 2x 2TB Samsung 970 Evo M.2 | EVGA 850W Gold | Corsair 5000X | HP G2 (VR) / LG 27" 1440p |
April 20, 201115 yr Author Hi Ryan,I pulled the battery and reset the CMOS. It then started up fine only to shut down on its own a few hours later. It seems that the RAM might be the problem. It isn't listed in ASUS' QVL (Qualified Vendor List) & I seems the two don't want to play nice...I'm doing a few more tests and failing that, i'll send the RAM back & swop it for another brand.
