Power Supply Issues

Featured Replies

There is a "locked" message thread here in the FSX forum whose poster wanted to know about how large a PSU should he use. I guess someone was "ugly" so the administrators locked the thread. My two cents - it depends. If you have a system with a medium graphics card (not requiring lots of power), a minimum of USB connections, and perhaps one or two devices connected to your computer, then 850W is a good choice. On the other hand, if you have a high-end graphics card that requires two power connections from the PSU, a very large number of USB devices connected, and additional graphics cards, then 850W is not a good choice. In fact, 1000W may not work either. In my case, I have two high-end graphics cards and perhaps 50 USB devices connected to my computer. In addition, I have two liquid cooling systems - one for the CPU and one for one of my graphics cards. In my case, even 1000W was not enough. Right now I'm running a 1600W PSU. This size gives me a stable supply of power and some additional overhead for increased demands. So, what is the answer - it depends. Look at your system specs and if it makes sense, use 850W. If you need more, install more.fb

Agreed. I'm running on a similar set up with multiple monitors and I'm using 1600 W as well. Definitely depends on what your power usage is really and its advisable to keep a little extra than what your system desires for those 'just in-case' times! Cheers,Karan

Hi - I have a stock unclocked Hewlett Packard 580T - I7 950,GTX 460 (OEM), single 1t hard drive, single monitor, dvd burner, dvd reader - thats it. Runs FSX well with Orbx scenery and some payware aircraft (Captn Sim C-130, A2A Cub, Carenado 172, 185, T34). Keep in mind the OEM GTX 460 only requires 1 plug instead of 2 in the branded ones - but it works well. The factory power supply is 460 watts. I haven't had ctd s or other problems associated with low power supplies. I realize I can't add much else to the system, but thaks fine with me. hope this helps. Howard

I've got a heavy duty one in desktop PC even though there aren't that many devices on my computer - a few USB external drives and the odd other thing or two, but I work on the principle that if you over tax a smaller PSU, it'll not last long - I've had a few lesser ones go awry in the past. Of course you do use a bit more elecktrickery, but not a vast amount more.Al

Nobody was "ulgy" about that thread, it had been closed because of the rule, that every thread regarding hardware in the FSX main forum will immerdiately be closed. The rule is here: http://forum.avsim.n...elated-threads/About the question: I run a oc´ed Core 2 Quad, an GTX 260 and 8 GB of DDR2 ram with only 420 watts and had never a power issue.

Best regards, Steffen

I would guess the locked thread was locked because this is not the appropriate forum for hardware discussions.
