Best Memory for X58 board?

Featured Replies

Hi. I am just an amature compared to you guys. I build my own rigs but with parts recommended by people more knowledgeable than me. I have been reading with interest your comments on timing and wonder if i have recieved some wrong advice. I have a Rampage iii extreme mobo. with a i7-950 and 6-gig G. Skill ram. DDR3-1600 PC3-12800 (F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ) The timing is 9-9-9-24. From what i have read here, i should be around 6-6-6 for the timing. Should i be rethinking my ram?Regards,
I can't talk about the p67 platform since I've never built one but because I tested it on a x58 platform I can tell you that faster rams with a better timing = better perf.If you are satisfied with the one you have don't spend more money on Rams, if you are looking for better rams the G.Skill as showed above will be better for sure, if you can find some 1600MHz with all numbers at 6-6-6-21 grab them, will it be a lot better than the G.Skill 6-8-6- timing as showed in this thread? no but as you know every bit of perf. we can get out of our rigs for FSX will help.If all rams were the same we will be buying them from different manuf. with the same MHz and CL.Here is how I explain how rams work in a simple way for the X58 platform.DDR3 = highway with 3 lane = you can move more cars (data) on a highway with three lane compare to two lane. DDR2 = highway with 2 laneMHz = (MPH) speed limit on the highway so 2000MHz as a faster speed limit compare to 1600MHz CL = (Horse Power) how fast you will get from point A to point B, so you will reach your destination faster with CL6 compare to CL9One of the test I use to see how the rams perform (speed of calculation) is SuperPi, here is my score,test2.pngHope this help.PS: I am pretty sure the SB will beat my score with the same GHz on the CPU with DDR3 Rams at 2133MHz, can somebody using the SB be welling to test it and report back their result? The SB at 5.0GHz should beat my score hands down by at least 1 minute.

LOL, you're going to be hard pressed to find results of SB + DDR2

:Big Grin: Typo that was.....:Black Eye: it's fixed...

ups, sorry, double post

Thanks Alain for your reply and advice. The best i can find in my area is: G.SKILL F3-12800CL6T-6GBPI Pi Series 6GB 3X2GB DDR3-1600 CL6-8-6-20 240PIN Triple Channel Memory Kit (F3-12800CL6T-6GBPI) How much better is this kit than the one i already have?
Hard to say, on paper they may be 2 > 3% faster as Dazz said (I would say more because of the low CL if you run them at 1T) you really have to test them and compare with what you have but I would expect better perf. FSX wise, nothing to pop a champagne bottle over it but maybe a beer or two...Also, can you post your rig spec., and the hardware you have, can you also post a screen shot of CPU-z with CPU, memory and SPD. You may be able to get more out of what you already have?

Will get CPU-z shots This weekend when i get back to my FSX rig. Thanks & Regards,Coolermaster CM STORM SNIPER mid t.OS: windows 7 pro 64bit.Motherboard: Asus Rampage iii Extreme CPU: i7 950 (not o/c)Ram: G Skill F3-12800CL9T-6GBNQ (1600Mhz)Timing: 9-9-9-24PSU: Coolermaster Silent Pro 1000wHard Drive 1: W.D. If you have enough room in your case this is IMO one of the best CPU cooler (air) so far, it's huge but it does the job... http://www.newegg.co...N82E16835608018
Before you do anything as far as Rams you'll have to overclock your CPU, that's where you'll get the most perf. to start with, you should be able to reach 4.2GHz easy and with the Noctua you'll get low temp. Here is a pic. to show you how big this poppy is...012-1.jpg

Not meaning to hijack this thread, but I just learned that one needs to match memory speed to your CPU platform. I have been running 1600 CAS 6 for a year on an 1156 and all was well except with the F1 Mustang. I could never get it to consistently run chop and stutter-free, and I had about given up when on a guess I bought two 4GB sticks of 2000 CAS 9. I couldn't get them stable in P95 so I went back to my 1600 and gave up on the Mustang. Reading this thread made me try again with two 4GB sticks of 2000, (from Mushkin this time), and it has made an unbelievable difference! I ran AIDA64 and the read throughput is up 11%! Stable in P95 and smooth with the Mustang. It is VERY noticeable in the game. 2000 CAS 9 beats 1600 CAS 6 for me and my 1156. K

Look like the speed of the mem. did it for you, if possible and if you can lower the CL without getting BSOD your result should be better, nothing drastic but better.Good luck and if you try with a lower CL let us know if it work good for you.

Thanks for the help everyone. I ended up going with this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145286 I chose to buy from Microcenter because I wanted to get it up and running over the weekend. This is the best they had and I think I am satisfied. I'm not sure that I notice much of a difference. All of the CL8 2000 kits were 4GB. In my sig, you can see what my timings were before. I had to run the Redline at 1604 and 1.66 volts to get the oc to stick at 4GB. I changed the timing to 7-8-7-20 and left the speed and voltage the same. I know it says 1.65v but I can't do 1.65 - only 1.64 and 1.66. Did a 7 hour flight without any issues. One DUMB question: How on earth do I use Memtest?I downloaded Memtest86+ USB installer. I installed it to a thumb drive. I went in to bios and put the thumb drive as #1 in boot priority. Still, whenever I boot up the system, I end up in Windows. Sound like I am missing something.

I don't know which mobo you have now, but in each bios there is a button to press to call up a boot selection menu - on Asus usually F8 I think. There you will find your usb and can boot from it to start Memtest. It's pretty straightforward thing...

You need to make the USB a bootable drive with hp usb disk storage format tool for example. Or you can download the .iso and burn it to a CD
