A lot of simmers seem to think that ILSes and autolands are always done - not true at all. Pilots like to actually fly their airplanes, especially after they've spent hours at cruise on LNAV/NAV. June 11, 201114 yr In the US, I agree. I would go many flights before performing an ILS or otherwise. However, in Asia, I would say it's the opposite, sadly. It's like the Magenta Line is the Yellow Brick Road. And we all know what happens when you stray of the Yellow Brick Road. Matt Cee

This is also partially why the general public gets the wrong idea about the pilots up front. They just sit up there and monitor things, right? Like Homer from The Simpsons? Kyle Rodgers
June 12, 201114 yr Some airlines require flying visual approaches in practice weather and ATC permitting. In addition they must be flown periodically to keep pilot ratings current, at least a visual final and landing. Some LCCs prefer their pilots fly visual approaches through the pattern because of the cost savings and that practice counts in the pilot's performance rating. In an article I have by a real world pilot he states the requirements of his quarterly sim challenge and at least one included a visual landing as I recall. It was one of the 'Both Sides' articles by FO Clay Taylor in a recent issue of Airways magazine. It should be said here too that visual approaches are by far the norm in real world ops.
