Disappearing runways and greenery on landing....... What's the FIX?

Featured Replies

I have the JABBGL utility, but I must not know, ( precisely ), how to use it. How many feet in elevation am I changing, per decimal place? I have two sceneries, that I fly to often. As I land the runways and greenery disappear. I'm able to make successful landings by ignoring this, but it's extremely irritating. How can I adjust ground elevation properly? The two sceneries are KBWI and KADW. Thanks. I NEED HELP........ And, while I'm thinking about it, my KRDU scenery, and my Mobile, Alabama scenery contains large white areas on the airport grounds, including the runways. No tarmac color, or apron color. No asphalt, or concrete, but large white areas with no color at all. I have tried placing texture files in those two scenery folders to include what appeared to be missing texture files, ( in order to include the missing colors ), but that didn't work for KRDU, or for Mobile, Alabama. Any ideas? Thanks again. I really appreciate any help you can offer...... Seriously.

I have a suggestion about the missing textures but not in regard to the disappearing runway. Try placing the texture files in the main FS texture folder. I've done this with other sceneries that displayed the same issue and that fixed it. Can't guarantee that this will solve it, but trying won't hurt.Jim D.

I do not know what the JABBGL utility is and I am not sure what would cause the runway to disappear but I think the first thing to do, when textures etc are behaving oddly, is to check for duplicate AFCAD files - that can certainly cause very unusual anomalies particularly as one gets closer to the ground on landing. I use a utility called AFX from Flight1 to check easily for duplicate AFCAD files but I think there are other utilities available which will also do that.Hope this helps,Bill

JABBGL is a utility which edits default FS9 airport elevations in APnnnnnn.bgl files and should ONLY be used when e.g. parked AI aircraft are hanging in the air or are (partially) below the ground at any addon airport in the same position. It uses meters with European decimal commas (",") instead of points (".") and it's mostly a question of trial and error to get the AI aircraft with their wheels correctly on the ground and by using the foot to meter ratio of 3.2808.Before editing any default APnnnnnn.bgl file, first copy/paste it to somewhere outside FS9 so that you can re-instate it if your efforts go wrong. However, any JABBGL usage will not cause (addon) runways to re-appear or to (partially) dis-appear. This specific problem is usually caused by mesh scenery with terrain lumps and bumps within the airport area and you should first de-activate any such separate mesh scenery in your scenery library to see if this will correct your problem. If this doesn't help or you have no such separate mesh scenery then your problem can be corrected by a "flatten" statement covering the whole airport area including it's runways etc.Such a flatten statement should be entered directly below the scenery.cfg file entry for the addon airport concerned so that it becomes part of the airport entry itself.Example: Flatten.0=14,N18 27.30,W64 25.92,N18 26.68,W64 26.05,N18 26.69,W64 26.12,N18 27.32,W64 26.07This will flatten the area at 14 feet ASL between four sets of lat/long positions, in this example each beginning with "N18". However, take great care because errors in such flatten statemants can cause unpredictable problems in other sceneries. Other "flatten" methods do exist but this is the method I've always used and prefer because it will have a higher priority over any possible mesh entries within the addon airport's scenery itself.A first "try-out" flatten elevation can be taken from the elevation specified in your addon Afcad file.If your runways now appear correctly then always make sure that your "flatten" and "Afcad" elevations are the same.Untextured objects or ground areas can in some cases be solved as Bill points out but if his method doesn't work (completely) then you should contact the developer or vendor about such problems because the necessary textures could be missing or corrupt.I wish you good luck.Hans

ADE has an elevation tool to change airport scenery elevation and make it uniform. You can also add a flatten. See section 7.6.1 Change Airport Altitude in the user manual. You can import stock data from the AP files plus add-on files, make any adjustments, save the project for further editing and compile the bgl.The original AP file will not be modified which is important because those files contain multiple airports. In some cases developers have modified those files deleting data that other add-ons have done. I'm not a fan of using that process. If it regards changing an ILS ID, that trick was used as AFCAD could not do it.For those interested ADE9 and ADEX freeware, manuals, and tutorials are here:http://www.scruffyduck.org.uk/filemanager/navega.php?id=2&PHPSESSID=e0de94c52219bb291300063a37e2fc6aand the description is here:http://www.airportdesigneditor.co.uk/

JABBGL edits the default bglcomp airport facility data files. Elevations in that file are in millimeters (.001 meters). From what I've seen JABBGL does not work correctly with below-sea level airports. It isn't really necessary any more now that we have the "stub airport" method of adjusting the default airport elevations. AFAICT, MS used feet in compiling the airports and the compiler converted into .001 meters.Terrain under an airport in default files is flattened using LWM polygons. Elevations in LWM are in 1/128ths of a meter. I don't know if it can cause flashing issues, but I always set the LWM flatten less than the airport elevation using the correct units. There are some other methods of flattening terrain, namely "flatten switch" in the scenery.cfg file or older bgl method typically seen when SCASM is used and known as "Area 16N" as called in SCASM. I have not investigated all the possible issues in using those other methods but my experience using LWM polys has less problems. scott s..
