Trying to hunt down FS9 stutters

Featured Replies

It was supposed to help with the speed of loading textures. However, some had said they've found no change while others have said that it has greatly improved their simming experience so perhaps, unfortunately, you are the one of the ones that didn't benefit from it.Seeing your computer specs I can't believe you have stutters at all. I have similar machine and even when setting my frame rate to 24 it gets constant 23.8 - 23.9 fps - it will get the odd little stutter here and there but I think those are due to certain textures used in scenery or ai aircraft textures. You may also have a process running on your machine that you don't even know about that is causing the stutters. Use Filemon or the new version of that for Win7 (system monitor or something like that I forget the name of it now) and see if anything is running at the same time as you notice the stutters. I could also be a anti-virus program causing it if you have anti-virus software running on the same machine as your FS setup.Thanks.

As expected, there is a LOT of data that passes through there. And since the stutters happen while panning, every second (maybe 2 seconds at most), it's difficult to trace...any big red flags I should be looking for? Thanks.

I set TEXT_BANDWITH_MULT to 1200 and am experiencing a very slight improvement...it seems time between stutters has increased a bit but the severity and overall look of terrain remains unchanged. Can anyone comment on settings for TBM? Again, searching the forum leads to results ranging from 40, to 400, to 4000 it seems.

Hey Kyle, I didn't read through the entire thread but are you running an nvidia inspector profile?I actually found (when I had fs9 installed) that running higher settings with AA and AF helped the stutter situation. So I always use a profile for FS9 and X.In addition, I wonder if there is an external fps limiter like we have for fsx, that would work in 9?

Try setting the two entries in your FS9.CFG to the values below and see what happens: If you don't have the TextureMaxLoad entry then add it below the UPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT and TEXTURE_BANDWITH_MULT entriesUPPER_FRAMERATE_LIMIT=24TextureMaxLoad=10Let us know how it goes.

Personally I have to disagree with the above... The only time I get butter smooth is at 60fps. 24FPS will always look choppy and horrible on my boxThe way I achieve 60 FPS is Nvidia profile with16xs AAHighest AFSuper Transparency enabledHigh Quality graphics settingVSync App controlledFS FPS unlocked. The combination of Vsync locking FPS to 60 (the refresh of my monitor) plus unlocked FPS within FS produces absolutely butter smooth results. Using FSFK I get AVG's of 59.9fps takeoff 60.00fps crz 59.9fps Landing. The best result is AI going past you at 60 FPS when they go shooting past without so much as a stutter...Everyone gets different results on different boxes though, that is just what works for me.

Agreed... turn on the profile, crank the AA and AF it will be better.

Indeed I do, Ryan. Interesting theory (along with psolk's). I'll have to try it when I get home. One unfortunate side effect I have with unlimited FPS is that on some airplanes the sound starts clipping/rattling (PMDG MD-11, QW 757, etc.). Anything in the low 20-30s locked has always looked super choppy on my machine as well.Thanks.

Could you perhaps post your fs9.cfg key entries as well? How does blurriness impact your overall smoothness and what entries have you been satisfied with to get your smooth experience. Thanks!

Will do when I get done with KEWR-EGLL. 2 1/2 hours in, strong tailwinds, probably 3 hours left....The VSync counters the Unlocked= sound cracking at 100FPS issues. As long as your screen is limited to 60hz your fps will also stay at 60fps so you never hit the 100fps issue

One other question, do you run in full screen or windowed mode? Thanks!

Well cranking it up certainly improved it a bit (weird :) ). And indeed full-screen mode is definitely almost there, wow...who would have known? I reckon enable vsync in windowed mode is still impossible on FS9? (unfortunately I'm a windowed-mode guy to be able to access FSInn, charts, etc.)Now it just may be tweaking that fs9.cfg file for blurries and the last little bit of stutter...but definitely an improvement. Thank you so much guys.

Anyone able to post their fs9.cfgs yet? Mainly the display/terrain sections if you think you get clear visibility and textures. Thanks!
