How PMDG Saved FligtSim - For me anyway!

Featured Replies

Since we're just waiting, I thought you might like this story. The recent cancellation of the Avsim Fancon and the upcoming release of the NGX reminded me of a very fortunate run-in I had with the PMDG team several years ago at the last Avsim event in Seattle. Like many of you I have been enjoying flightsim since the Sublogic days. At first my wife didn't mind my addiction but over time time she became more and more concerned. With the ever increasing need for more quality payware and the need to upgrade my computer system every other year, this "hobby" was getting to be fairly expensive. My wife almost flipped out when I told her I wanted to go to the Avsim event in Seattle because PMDG was going to preview their soon-to-be-released MD-11. We finally cut a deal that she would go antiquing in Snohomish while I attended the meetings (a win-win deal/bribe). On the last night of the event I was able to convince my wife to attend the Awards Banquet. We got there a bit early and had a few drinks waiting for things to get started. We sat down at a vacant table that had a good view of the room. Imagine my surprise when the whole PMDG delegation ("the captain and the kids") asked if they could sit at our table. After a few moments of stunned silence, I invited them to join us. Luckily, the captain sat next to my wife and made an incredible impression on her (that silver-tongued devil). Needless to say, for me the evening passed far to quickly. When we got back to our room my wife said that she was surprised that there were actually some intelligent and competent people involved in flightsim business.Ever since that banquet, my wife has actually encouraged me to become even more involved in flightsim and was actually disappointed when she heard that the event in DC was canceled (she was planning to visit the museums but looked forward to the banquet). So thank you PMDG for your help and I hope we might meet again in the future.

It´s not gonna kill it. Awesome people (RSR, Tabs, Doc Vaos etc) at awesome companies (PMDG etc) are going to make it awesome like they did FSX. Too much awesomeness. Sorry.

Sorry there mate if my attempt at humor upset you. Perhaps you should run a search with my name on it. It will become quite obvious that I´ve been around a while longer than you in these parts helping people and making valid points at good discussions. Think about that the next time you flame someone. Don´t bother answering, I will not answer back and turn this nice thread into an immature discussion.

Great story Charlie. My wife tolerates my addiction, but discourages it if the opportunity arrises. But to coin a Chris Palmer phrase, I "Throttle on" :(

Charlie-Ah! I remember you both quite well- and I have your card here in my desk.Thank you for the kind words- I agree that we had an enjoyable evening together and I apologize again for the fact that we took over your nice quiet table. I too was disappointed to see the convention canceled, as I thought it would be great fun to have the whole PMDG team in Washington DC for a few days. (The trip was going to coincide with a house-hunting project as we are moving back to the east coast in order to put my daughter into a better education system...) It would have been fun to make the awards dinner an annual thing! You may recall that Jason Brown and his lovely wife, Christie sat with us that evening as well. Proving once again the theory that our wives play an important role in keeping us on the centerline: Jason was an avid simmer who had been teaching himself to model airplanes in 3DStudio, so Christie had encouraged Jason to bring some samples of his work along "just in case."Jason was hired by PMDG a few months after that dinner and he has been a great addition to the modeling/artwork department. (He created the JS4100, the two 747 extensions and the NGX external model is almost entirely his work.) Jason and Christie just spent a few days with us here in NV, and we had a great time with them. Thanks for posting- and please pass along my regards.

Well that's quite a nice and fun story. Wish I would've been able to attend such an event, but there is very little big events in France.
