How to fly practice circuits

Featured Replies

Here it is, knew this was out on the internet somewhere..... http://www.smartcock.../diagrams/0012/
Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I used to sim a couple of these in a session if I didn't have time for a full flight. cheersChris

Me too, but I'm not quite familiar with the term 'squeeze' in this context...!? sig.gif
'Squeeze' refers to rudder movement to make sure the aircraft is lined up down the centerline..
Circuits are flown manually, just put a 3.5NM range ring around the airport on the ND and fly the pattern at 1500'AGL. After that it's just basic flying skill. There's no point in flying a circuit with the AP engaged as the point of flying in the pattern is to get a feel for how the aircraft handles... Takeoff with flaps 25, retract flaps to 5 after takeoff, flaps 30 for landing, on touch down, stand the throttles up, set flaps to 25, trim the aircraft then advance the power levers to TOGA power for the takeoff, don't arm autobrakes or spoilers on final. That's all I can think of ATM...
Thanks Rónán, all of you posts contain such a wealth of information. You don't know how valuable your posts have been since I started reading these forums 2 months ago, I really appreciate having the real world slant on things, it just gives insights that we can't get, yet you make the information easy to digest for those like me who don't know alot. [And the fact you're also from Ireland is nice toowink.png ]

I concur. It's great when you guys take the time to share your knowledge. Fascinating stuff!

Ed Haslam

You should have a special sub-section just dedicated to you and the other real world pilots so we can all share your knowledge easily. Did you ever think about writing a blog, I for one would be sure to follow it an many others probably would as well.

This is THE video to learn how to fly touch and goes/visual patterns with the 737:

Great video Christopher, and great suggestions Ronan! Only by this I realized how poor were my hand-fliying skills.. :)I have one question - every time i do a touch and go, all my flight data get reset - no more weight information, v-speeds, reference runway, etc. In that video their FMC data do not get reset throughout many touch-and-go's. Do you have any idea how did they accomplish this? Or is it some inconsistency in the NGX FMC?

Could someone also explain "stand the throttles up", please ?Thanks in advance,Bruno

It means set the throttles to the vertical position, about 50-60% N1 IRC.

Thank you Sir ! (maybe I can write : "Thanks Rónán", now that I have found the trick with ALT+160 and ALT+162) Peace.gifBruno

So, in order for me to get V-Speeds, do I have to setup the CDU each circuit?

No, you just remember them. They won't change significantly if your circuits only last about 5-6 mins anyway.... And remember one of the golden rule of flying, Every aircraft can be flown like a single engine prop, no matter how automated. Or something along those lines.... Edit: Here it is, see rule #1, And Rule #2 in that pic should be down as "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate - Manage; In that order" It's easier to remember that way....

Then there's the other sayings like "Two things in aviation that are of no use to you are the runway behind you and the sky above you....." But I digress....
