How to fly practice circuits

Featured Replies

So... is there no way to keep the flight data during the touch and go?After my first circuit today I couldn't find the airport anymore because I was flying under IMC conditions... Benny

Circuits are flown manually, just put a 3.5NM range ring around the airport on the ND and fly the pattern at 1500'AGL. After that it's just basic flying skill. There's no point in flying a circuit with the AP engaged as the point of flying in the pattern is to get a feel for how the aircraft handles... Takeoff with flaps 25, retract flaps to 5 after takeoff, flaps 30 for landing, on touch down, stand the throttles up, set flaps to 25, trim the aircraft then advance the power levers to TOGA power for the takeoff, don't arm autobrakes or spoilers on final. That's all I can think of ATM...
How do you place a "range ring" on the ND? I searched the manuals but could not find a section describing how to do this.

Using the Fix Page. Click on FIX, enter the airport icao, then enter the rwy alignment/distance for example for rwy 04 alighned at 037 enter 037/5 for a 5nm range ring.

This is something that keeps me bugging - can any RW pilots confirm you lose all ZFW data when doing touch&go's?Its annoying, since when doing another circle, you have to focus both on flying, and on putting back ZFW and active rwy. cheers,

Do you really need your ZFW when doing touch&go`s?

Because it is a neccessary item to be able to compute your Vref, and with my (very limited!) knowledge I can't understand why it should get reset upon the 'touch'. After all, after the touch ZFW doesn't change. Second, also the landing runway gets deleted from the FMC, (even though it is not related to ZFW). In this link there is a video where this information does not get deleted upon each touch'n'go, but it might result from some special FMC configuration, or a different plane model - thats why I ask. I do program my fix at the runway threshold + the 3nm circle around the runway, but putting rwy information back info FMC seems to be such a big (unnecessary) effort. One thing to note, is that in the video I can see some approach programmed to that runway - may be it is a way to preserve runway information in the FMC - I just can't reproduce it.

Okay, see rule one above, you don't need to know the ZFW, just remember the Vref and Vapp speeds, they won't change too much over the course of the half hour or so your up there flying, remember, the point in flying circuits is to get a feel for how the aircraft handles, not it's normal procedures, they're learnt in the classroom and the sim. As for the runway thing, if you imput the airport and the runway heading into the fix page in the FMGS, then you should get the runways extended centerline on the ND...

While I agree that in this situation it is not a (big) issue, I still think the question is valid. Why is all the FMC data deleted upon touchdown in the PMDG 737NGX while in real life this is not (always?) the case, as we can see from the YouTube video posted earlier?

Kind regards,

RYR captain told me to time between RWY treshhold and turning base:(heigt /100 *3) - half of the tailwind component. So, if your flying the cicruit at 1200' AGL, turn base 36 seconds after passing the RWY treshhold. (no wind in this case)Bert Van Bulck

So, in order for me to get V-Speeds, do I have to setup the CDU each circuit?
If you really really want the current V-speed, just double click on the appraoch flap setting and it will updatze.Bert Van Bulck

Good question! Is (in RW) the data flushed upon touchdown? My work-around for this is to select an other destination airport than the one I do touch and goes on. However, I think in RW, this would lead to my immediate castration by the chief pilot :)How's it done correctly?Bert Van Bulck.
This is THE video to learn how to fly touch and goes/visual patterns with the 737:
